The Stampboards AFL Footy Tipping Contest is starting for the 2011 season, and all members are welcome to join in the fun.

Note the one major rule change in Red below.

The 2009 winner, Lakatoi4 was a Rugby Union supporter, and the 2008 winner Clino, was from the USA and neither of these winners had ever seen an AFL match in his life, so anybody can win.

We had over 30 starters the first year, over 50 in the past two years, and had a really good time.

Let's try to break the 75 barrier this year - it might get me a 10th grain of sticky rice as my annual payment from Admin for Modding on the Board (even though I have never seen any of the rice I am owed) .

We will have 4 main prizes, as many of our members from previous years can attest. These are well worth the 5 minutes per week that it takes to tip.

There are prizes for the top 3 tipsters, plus a prize (subject to the rules) for last place.

Confirmed Main Prizes:

First Prize: A $150.00 Credit Voucher from Glen Stephens, which can be used to purchase anything from http://www.glenstephens.com that you wish.

Second Prize: A $100 e-voucher for any of the 15,000 stamp items on fletches1 huge website - http://stampmall.com.au - good for members globally.

Third Prize: Kevin Morgan has confirmed he will again donate an annual "Stamp News" sub within Australia - value $89.50. Most generous, and thanks for assisting once again Kevin!

Prize for the WORST tipster as decided by Norm's final table - A $50 e-voucher for any of the 15,000 stamp items on fletches1 huge website - http://stampmall.com.au - good for members globally.

And random prizes offered along the entire round - if you wish to offer something for a round, or a special reason, please contact Norm.

Join up and have some fun - no skill needed, just five minutes required once a week to post who you think will win the eight matches. And you do not need to know anything about Australian Rules Football to play.

And anyone coming in late can join in for up to six weeks after the season starts, although you will be at a disadvantage to those who came in from the beginning.

The Footy starts on Thursday, March 24, so get in on time.

Don't wait - subscribe now. No skill is required to play, so overseas members are definitely welcome, as long as you pick Geelong every week.

And of course, it is completely free.

The Rules:

A list of all forthcoming AFL matches will be listed each Monday (or Tuesday if there is a Monday match) during the season.

All you need to do is predict who will win each of the matches to be played over the following weekend.

One point will be awarded per correct selection. No points will be awarded for any drawn matches (unless somebody actually predicts a draw).

There is one major change here. If anybody predicts all 8 winners in a given Round, two Bonus Points will be awarded to that person. In weeks that seven or less games are played, one Bonus Point will be awarded for any persons who predicts all the winners.[/color]

This is now standard practice for the major on-line competitions, and will be incorporated into this competition. Trust me folks, it's not easy to pick the lot.

The total number of correct selections will be aggregated over the entire season and the winner(s) shall be the person(s) who picks the most winners of the 176 games over the season.

All AFL results, the progressive AFL ladder and a progressive list of where you stand on the Stampboards tipping contest will be posted weekly, usually within a day of the round being completed (depending upon Heart Attacks occuring to yours truly).

All predictions must be posted and board time-coded by 7:00PM Australian Eastern Standard Time each Friday (if there is a Thursday match, the Thursday deadline will apply). Late entrants will receive the "away" team for any match where the deadline has passed, and their selections for late matches.

Posts may not be edited after 7:00PM on the night the round starts.

If a member does not post in a particular week, or misses the deadine above, he or she will be awarded the away (second named) teams as his/her selections.

Any member who does not post for three weeks running, or for six weeks in total once having joined will be considered to have withdrawn from the competition.

Any member within four points of winning the "last place champion" prize MUST make selections in the final round (Round 24) or will be automatically disqualified from winning this prize.

Members will have up until round Six to join the competition. Any member joining after Round one will get an averaged aggregate total of all existing competitors as a starting score.

If there is a tie for any of the prize positions at the end of the season the winner will be chosen by a countback. So if a tie occurs at the end of Round 23, the winner will be determined by who led the competition at the end of Round 22. If still a tie then the leader at Round 21 etc....

Any member who will be away during the season has the choice of being automatically given the "away" teams as their selections, or may select for all the weeks they will be away in advance. Go here:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=26242

for the complete 2011 AFL fixture. This will give you all the matches to be played while you are away.

The winner will be announced the Sunday evening immediately following the completion of Round 24 on 2 September 2011.

If this is unclear in any way, please post your concerns and I will clarify anything you may have a problem with. I discovered a long time ago that I am not perfect - not even close.

Hi there, here are my tips for week 1. I am still learning the team names so you will have to excuse the format in which I show my picks! Right now it is kind of like "Logo Wars"

Image

I have managed to pick a favorite team, and my choice had nothing to do with seeing this picture:

That guy is Awesome!!

Have a Good One, :D

OK - I really don't have a clue what I am doing here - if it isn't UK Premier League I am stuffed.
I watched a clip on Sky the other week about Aussie Football (the program was about buying houses in Oz .. go figure!!).
I gather it is a mix of (real) football and rugby. Isn't there a tactic called "tipping" within the game itself (or did I mishear)?
I admit to having heard of Collingwood somewhere (?) so they have to be one.

Anyway ...... My Tips for Week 1:

Carlton
Geelong Cats
Collingwood
Hawthorn
Fremantle
Western Bulldogs
Melbourne
West Coast Eagles

I'll see how they go over the 6 weeks to see if I can improve my knowledge.

A couple of questions:
Is there such a thing as a "draw" (or a "tie" as known in the US) in these games?
Is the first team named the Home team? (seems natural to me but for some reason not in North America)

Gooner- yes there are draws/ties and on the Official ladder(AFL) they share the 4 points for the game.(2 each). Normal is 4 points for a win, 0 points for a loss.

Yes the home team is named first BUT with only 2 major venues in Melbourne, it may be two teams who both call the ground home. Both Perth teams use the same ground, as well some HOME games are played at other grounds like Canberra, Darwin and Tasmania.(This has to do with the Financial arrangements made between the clubs and the AFL. to help overcome their debt problems).

Thanks Waroff...

guess I should have read the rules properly first on one of my questions:

Quote:
One point will be awarded per correct selection. No points will be awarded for any drawn matches (unless somebody actually predicts a draw).

I am assuming by this that draws are a fairly rare occurrence as in Rugby Union (and we may need to do a bit of "pakistani cricketing") to guess one correctly?

Actually last year's Grand Final was a draw.

No 'Golden Goals' here -- they played it all again the next week, and it was a slaughter.

Exactly, perhaps 1 or 2 a year. There is generally 1 though, just to throw everything into confusion.

Question without notice to Norm.
Say a tipper picks 7 winners and there is a draw( for the eighth match), do they still get the eight match bonus, since their picked team didn't lose?
And do they get a super bonus if they pick 7 and a draw?????

Not that it's likely to happen but is a possibility these days.

Bill, as per the rules, no points are awarded for a draw (unless somebody actually selects a draw), so as in the past any drawn game is by definition not a "win" for the tipster. No bonus points would be awarded in these circumstances.

I note with some amusement that this thread is almost a page long, and is yet to contain any Fev. or Ricky Nixon jokes.

C'mon folks, get with the program. :D

Actually, one person did, but then messed up by putting in a subsequent tip for the same game (not a draw), which cost them the $50.00 prize.

Hi Gooner!
Just curious what is "Pakistani cricketing" in UK terms?
Has it something to do with being unpredictable?
Pakistan is facing WI day after tomorrow in the 1st Quarter Final and its "Pakistan Day" too (23 March).

Thanks for wishing us luck.
I am participating in this thread because I have also never seen an AFL game (even on TV), so keeping up the traditions, I may also win it one day ;)

@John A: Don't worry. You seem to be an expert on AFL Tipping!!!! :)
