Hi Domiziano,

That's a interesting item. It's a postal stationery envelope issued by the Post Office to mark a special event at the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum) commemorating 50 years of the Uniform Penny Post.

It was the only envelope to use this 1d stamp design which was usually used on postal stationery postcards. The other Victorian 1d envelopes of the time had a pink stamp with the the Queen's head in an elliptical frame.

The envelope has been uprated from 1d to 2½d for postage to the US.

Here is a unused copy of Dominiano's cover and a piece of stationary that seems to be from the same 1890 event , possibly just an insert- it is slightly smaller than the cover?

Ahoj there!

Many collectors seem to pass over stationery items, so they are often a source of unusual postmarks.

This item is a 5h Austrian card of 22nd January 1907 with a neat
Lindau-Innsbruck TPO No 191 and addressed to Bohemia.

and this is a Swiss 25c card revalued as a 30c card and posted on 20th January 1960. It also has an interesting slogan in Italian urging people not to annoy their neighbours with their radios!

I don't have a catalogue for stationery items. Is the Swiss provisional fairly common?

Nice rate too -- quadruple postage of 10d + 4d railway late fee for Continental mails posted directly onto the train, 1885-1905.

Here's a large one received last week from PR China, originally issued in 2008. The 6 additional 5y stamps are apparently cut from a miniature sheet or similar; the 'perforations' are printed.

Ahoj there!

A quite common GB 1d brown stationery card, but with a beautifully crisp Kirkcaldy double-ringed postmark of 1886.

The back is unusual in that it has an underprint of the Union Bank of Scotland Limited.

A 1994 registered Iraqi aerogramme to China:

I still need to find translations for the different markings. My guess is that one of the markings is the equivalent of "Postage Paid" because there are no stamps on either side of the aerogramme.

I think you'll find that the pre-printed blue & green rectangle with denomination 150 fils and captioned 'REPUBLIC OF IRAQ' IS the stamp, as you would expect on postal stationery.

I appreciate your comment. I have three other registered Iraqi aerogrammes from this period, two addressed to France and one to Australia - to a postal stationery collector. The face value of the stamps used on these aerogrammes was at least three dinars.

My best guess was that the rate was more than 150 fils by 1994, but the registration fee raises questions. (Frankly I had not given registration and the possibility of philatelic use enough thought.)

I am trying to work out the rates using the covers and aerogrammes that I have and have seen. Finding commercial mail has been a bit of challenge, used postal stationery even more so.

It may well be that the registration fee = the postage fee. That was the Soviet system for many years.

What period are you looking for? I saw a lot of mail addressed to the BBC Arabic Service at yesterday's fair - noted Libya and Iraqi stamps, but wasn't really looking for that. They were a bit tatty (I'm sure the same dealer had them at April's fair!) and were £1 a piece.

Here's an envelope from the non-country of the PMR, Pridnestrovian Moldovan Republic. It's an unstamped envelope with a portrait of the Russian General Suvorov to commemorate his 250th birth anniversary. Suvorov was the founder of the city of Tiraspol'.

Tiraspol' is the capital of the PMR - between Moldova and Ukraine. Its territory is claimed by Moldova. The PMR is not recognized by anybody except South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The Russian Federation maintains a small armed forces presence there as the majority of the inhabitants of the PMR are Russian speakers.

There is a 5 Kopek Soviet definitive with a Soviet postmark for "Тирасполь 18 Молд. ССР" - Tiraspol' 18 Mold. SSR - applied on 13 November 1995. But it has been made into a postal stationery envelope by a square handstamp with "ПМР 12000 Почта" (PMR 12000 Post). 12000 is twelve thousand PMR rubles - the cost of a registered letter. The rectangular box at the top is a registration cachet of Tiraspol' - З for Заказное = Registered and Тирасполь 18 - Tiraspol' 18 the same as the postmark.

These and several other envelopes, postal cards and letter sheets were obviously issued for collectors. I do have a couple of less fancy items used to Odesa in Ukraine and a couple of items used apparently for genuine postal purposes within the PMR. They gave up issuing stationery in about 2000. But the PMR is still there 21 years after it declared its independence from Moldova in 1990, even before the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Although Bruce Conde lived for a time in Taiz, Yemen, he would sometimes post his mail from Aden.

This postal card was posted a short time before he was forced to leave Yemen. Apparently his calls for the boycotting of some of Yemen's stamp issues from 1957/1958 were working.

Thats a nice example of the Empire 3d card.

Although the "quick" rate to Australasia was introduced 1st Jan 1889 the British Post Office didn't issue the 3d card until 1st September and the rate was reduced on 1st Oct 1891 to 1d.

The above example is the only one I have seen used "in period" to a non Australasian country, hence why I bought it even though the condition could be nicer. The rate at this time to India was only 2d. The 3d Fee could have included a Late Fee payment but there is no indication that the item was posted after 6pm.

A relatively common QV India postal stationery cover. 2a 6p rate from Allahabad to Munich. Braun and Schneider (the recipients) were a publishing firm based in Munich who I believe operated from c1855 to c1895.

Two Afghan formular aerogrammes from the late 1940s:

Wayne Menuz includes a short discussion about these two formular aerogrammes in his article "Afghanistan: Fakes and Unlisted" in Postal Stationery, #349, July-August 2006, p. 100.

The inscription in blue or black concerns the price of the formular aerogramme itself which was 50 pouls. The black overprint is longer at 23.5mm, the blue at 20.5mm.

I don't know whether the Kandahar cancellations add any value, but I thought the use of three of them was a bit of a curiosity.

Also, I don't have a copy of Frank Patterson's book on Afghanistan, otherwise I might have been able to add to this description.

For the longest time, I also ignored these formular aerogrammes. It has been only recently that I realized that I should buy examples if I want to put together a representative collection of Afghanistan aerogrammes.

I wish I had paid attention to Patterson's description of these aerogrammes when I read his book about Afghanistan's stamps and postal stationery.

"Airmail - The Entire Truth", edited by Artur Lewandowski, is a useful, if slim, account of aerogrammes. The followup by Classic Philatelics may also be worthwhile reading.

What books and journals are useful to you ?

For general reference for stationery I use the Higgins & Gage loose-leaf cat. My main stationery collecting interest is the Penny Farthing Postcard of GB used between 1875 and 79 when the UPU came into existence. However I like most Victorian postcards and Lettercards so the most helpful book and the one I find myself referring to most is "The Evolution of British Stamped Postcards and Letter Cards" by Mr H.Dagnall.

For more general GB reference I use "Collect British Postal Stationery" a priced catalogue by Alan Huggins and Colin Baker both fellow members (more accurately leading lights) of the Postal Stationery Society. The society's quarterly journal is also a source of much general interest articles on Stationery of other countries, old and newish.

Here are a couple of examples of the "Empire" 3d Postcard specifically issued for the "Fast" sea route GB to Australasia. I've seen various claims that there are only a dozen or so correctly used "in period" examples, but I suspect there are a few more. It is never the less a very scarce card properly used.

The stamp part of the design is also attractive and unusual when issued in that it was the only full length portrait of Queen Victoria used by the British PO during her reign and when issued the first to show at her then current age rather than using the Young Queens portrait.

Yes -- 2d postcard rate to Empire/Commonwealth destinations, 1950-57. The Australian impressed stamp would just have been ignored.

They are popular down here, and vrty pricey if postally used in the islands. I added this to my Rarity page -

1973 Australian 'Formular' Aerogramme USED IN *PNG*: Used from Rabaul with light Rabaul roller cancel. Used to Tasmania to a well-known family. Chatty letter inside dated "Rabaul 27/3/73" Fresh condition but some light creasing consistent with the postal journey.

Australian un-denominated 'Formular' aerograms or air-letters used in the Territories are rare, and sought-after by specialists. Stephen Bradford's two examples used on Norfolk Island realised A$625 and A$800 (both plus 16.25% commission!) at Premier Philately auction #99 way back in 2002 - http://www.oopiya.notlong.com
