Hi,

Just joined the board, and I thought I would start by sharing a few images. More to come when I get the hang of it.

Image

1842 1d red-brown plate 23 pair [DJ-DK] on entire from Ballina to Dublin dated 3 Dec 1848, cancelled with a single black Irish numeral (29 Ballina).

Thanks Flying Tiger! :D It is neat being able to compare cancellations that are apart almost 20 years to the day! There are some really nice examples in this thread, kudos to you for startin'-er up!!

Have a Good One, :)

Nice cover! Especially the cancel: Only one strike for a pair= contrary to regulations! Irish ones are a little more rare.

I didn't want to use the terminolgy in one of my first posts - it seems to get a lot of people a hot under the collar. But it is the correct term - every stamp was supposed to be cancelled individually. I particularly like pairs like this as you can see much more of the stamp and the Queen's profile than with a central cancel.

I will dig out a few more.

I didn't really think I had many Irish cancellations but it turns out I have more than I thought. Here are a few more singles from various places in Ireland.

214 Numeral cancel of Enniskillen

218 Numeral cancel of Fermoy

445 Numeral cancel of Waterford

Same here. When I started collecting Britian used in Ireland, they seemed few and far between. But after I obtained some relevant literature, the search has been much easier. What started out as 4 examples several months ago is turning into a nice collection. Now to fill in some gaps with Iriah Maltese Crosses.

Keep them coming!

Hi!

I sorted those out, which I thought could be irish postmarks. Am I right with these? I could also show detailed scans of single stamps. There is also a postally used fiscal stamp if I`m right.

Gee, I don't know how I missed reading this posting from two months ago, but somehow I did.

Yes, they all appear to be Irish postmarks (quite a nice selection by the way). I am unsure if that is indeed a postal cancel on the fiscal stamp (top row, eight stamp). Could you provide a higher resolution scan?

A nice dated piece with 1d's and 2d from Boyle (numeral 70)

Pity the numerals aren't blue to match the date stamp, but you can't have everything.

Here is one I picked up today.

It is not a full strike, but the "PPOQUIN" of "CAPPOQUIN" is readable.

The cancel is on a Downey Head so Skilo will be happy

Again from my great-grandfather's collection...

He was Northern Irish, so a great deal of his GB material is "used in Ireland".

Here a few examples:

1935 silver jubilee first day cover - Belfast

1d lilac 14 dot - Moate

Penny Stars - Dungannon

This should qualify. According to the Whitney, this stamp was cancelled in Monasterevan:

Nice examples, Marco.

Apparently between 1838-1860, the spelling of "Tullamoore" (your example) changed to "Tullamore" (my example)

A nice stamp Flying Tiger, which watermark does it have? I would like to add this date to my notes, I make it to be NO 3 13 (November 3 1913).

I appreciate you checking this for me if you can, Thanks! :D

I don't think there was a normal 4d rate. The rates (from memory) at the time were :

up to ½ ounce - 1d
up to 1 ounce - 2d
up to 4 ounces - 6d
up to 6 ounces - 10d

It is possible that it was originally 2d and then re-directed on arrival which would cost another 2d, but it would have had to have been sent within Boyle and all three stamps seem to be cancelled at the same time - so that is unlikely.

More likely, I think, is that it could have been part of a 6d (or more) piece and the right most stamp(s) were removed when it was trimmed. The right-hand red doesn't appear properly tied to the piece on the right side and the piece has been trimmed along that edge.

Or it may simply have weighed 2 ounces and someone thought: 1 ounce = 2d, so 2 ounces must = 4d.

Chris.

Just to contradict my previous post, I came across this Post Office Notice of 7 Jan 1840 (just the scan, not an original).

Image

So it looks like 4d was just the rate for between 1 ounce and 2 ounces.

Chris.

A really nice strike of the combined date and obliterator cancellation from Cootehill, Co Cavan. The ones with a single line round the town and date section look like this example from Markethill.

The cancel on the stamp is of a later type than the example because the horizontal bars in the numeral are much thicker.

I wondered why some cancellations are thicker than others. I thought it was an inconsistency in the canceling devices.
