On another thread, a member asked why do you collect....[insert country here]

This is one of my countries, and I will over a period post all of them, in year/issue order, with a very brief commentary.

Hopefully this will become a complete on line catalogue for Tokelau - and if one new collector decides to collect these fascinating issues because of this thread, it's worth the effort. (It will also force me into makig the effort to buy a couple of sets that I am missing - ulterior motive)

Tokelau was formally the Union Islands and was administered as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Island group. transferred to New Zealand in 1925 (sdministered by Western Samoa, using Samoan stamps) and became a New Zealand dependancy in 1949.

The Pre Decimal Era - 1949 to 1966. Yep, the scan below is all of them)

Image

1948 SG 1-3 Map of the Islands with Atafu village, Nukanonu hut and Fakaofo village

1953 SG 4 Coronation, based on New Zealand design.

1956 SG 5 A 1/- stamp, overprinted on SG 1. 1/-? What were they thinking

1966 SG 6-8 New Zealand arms blanks overprinted Tokelau Islands with value. A red latter day for collectors - 3 new stamps after a 10 year wait.

The Early Decimals - 1967 to 1970.

From 8 stamps in 18 years, a flood of issues over the next four years - 13 new stamps, including the first Tokelau based commemorative series:

Image

1967 SG 9-11 Overprints of the 3 stamp 1948 definitive series for decimal currency

1968 SG 12-15 Again, as in 1966, New Zealand Arms series blanks overprinted with Tokelau Islands, new decimnal currency value additions to the definitives, And with the top value at 20 cents, the highest face value stamp to date, and the longest set to date.

1969 SG 16 - 19 Tokelau's first home grown commemorative set, and the equal longest set to date. Not all that exciting, but better will come later. The series, somwhat boringly traces the management of the Islands - British Proetectorate (1877), Transfer to Gilbert and Ellice Islands (1916) New Zealand Administration (1925), and finally, New Zealand Territory (1948)

1969 SG 20 Xmas stamp. Same design as New Zealand's lowest value Christmas stamp for 1969.

1970 SG 21 A very quiet year, with only one being issued. Xmas stamp. Also the same design as New Zealand's lowest value Christmas stamp for 1970. The last Tokelau stamp based on stamps designed for New Zealand issues, and the last Xmas commemorative until 1988.

So, the first 22 years of stamps for Tokelau, is an extremely conservative 21 stamps, none overly attractive, but total cost is probably under $10.00 the lot, and pretty easy to assemble and have a complete era of a country.

But from now on, they start getting better.

Norm

Good collection. I have only the first three stamps 1948 (MNH) without any overprint.

To add to the scans Norm added, I have this nice collection in stock now for $A100 on Hingeless pages, which is the first 1948 set onwards.

Darn cheap country to add as a sideline.

Norm already has scans of the earlies, but here are the later issues -

Good afternoon!

You may be interested to learn that Mowbray Collectables has offered many Tokelau Is lots featuring covers in their recent past auctions. In their next (sale #416) there are some more.

For more information/catalogues contact Arna: arna[at]mowbrays.co.nz

Thank you.

The more recent issues for Tokelau are on a very commercial program with a multitude of minisheets - some of which depict life in the region, but many other are quite fancyfull. They have a vivid "space" minisheet & stamps + 2 first day covers, but they have nothing in common with their special enviroment.
Modern releases appear to be progressively expensive, particularly the cumulative annual collecting cost.

These issues are more than 10 years old, so I wonder if there has been a "40th anniversary of the first manned moon-landing".
Very hard to keep up the past few years.

Hello to everybody.
Tokelau Islands are among my favorite nations ........

Just want to share 3 envelopes which may be defined commercial ( no stamps or envelope were supplied to Tokelau !)

Nukunonu 10 May 1970 to Italy

Image

Atafu 16 June 2004 to Lao P.D.R.

Image

Nukunonu 26 November 2009 to Lao P.D.R. with a strange 'Postage paid Permit ... ' and the date was not, as it should have been, added in manuscript

Cheers,
mauriziolaos

Norm,

Thank you for starting this thread.

After reading this I remembered that I have a collection of Tokelau stashed away which I haven't really looked at for a while. It was in the category of countries that I wasn't interested in continuing. But...your thread has sparked my interest.

I have already started doing some research on the web about Tokelau and maybe I will look at filling the gaps in that collection.

So again, Thanks for the motivation and I look forward to the next country that you discuss. :)

MLB.

This issue can be bought also in New Zealand.
http://stamps.nzpost.co.nz/tokelau/2011/scenic-definitives-2012
Each of the nine gummed stamps depicts the stunning scenery found throughout the three coral atolls of Tokelau - from picturesque coastlines to enticing fishing and diving spots. Date of issue is 11 April 2012 (and not 2011 as indicated by New Zealand Post !)

I also had received them split on 3 letters from Nukunonu ....
