Two maltese crosses: one on a piece sent from India (I'm told the MC was probably added in Britain, to forward the letter to another address)...

Image

And one on an ivory head stamp...

Image

I don't know if either can be identified to particular places?

A few from my collection to bump this thread and to get the hang of posting pictures.

All from black plate 11 with black, red and blue Maltese Crosses.

The MX on stamp lettered AE looks very much like like the London II broken points MX and JB looks like a Scottish balloon type MX.

Places (i.e. if the Maltese Crosses are of anywhere distinctive) were what I was asking for and am still curious to know (my post above) if anyone can help. Plates I'll get on to in time!

Neither of those crosses jumps out to me as being particularly distinctive. Here are some examples of the "distinctive" crosses:

Here is a good downloadable primer...

http://www.philatelicsannex.org/referen ... rence.html

It's the first one listed "R. C. Alcock and F. C. Holland's "The Postmarks of Great Britain and Ireland. Part 2 Section E (1) - Maltese Cross Cancellations."

Maybe wait a few days and let them "clean" the site as its been tagged, apparently.
I have no idea why, but Firefox just told me that this general site was on the "malware" list.
Norton reported nothing wrong. But Norton doesn't until I hover over the problem within the site. The whole thing is certainly not malware.

I've used it extensively and have never had a problem.
Most of the downloads are just PDF's!
I tried to tell firefox that it not a malicious site and we'll see. I'll contact Philatelics.org as well as its their site but the information says the malware is not hosted by them.

If not I might covert the PDF back into JPG and list it here? Its 81 pages though.

Speaking of late use of the Maltese Cross, here is one.

An envelope dated 6 July 1845 from Longtown, Cumbria to Ecclefechan. A full 14 months after the Maltese Cross had been replaced by the barred numeral cancellations in England.

Here's an interesting one - a Maltese Cross that overstruck the Poulton Penny Post receiving stamp.

Image

Chip

PS - this is also an example that shows it is impossible to tell the order of application of postmarks from scans and often in person. The Poulton mark was struck first at the penny post receiving house, the MX later at the main post office.

Here's a late use of MX from April 1852. (I think it is actually plate 113). Probably from Southborough, which has other examples known from 1852.

Really nice contrast between the two different coloured inks on that one. The black of the Poulton Penny Post and the blue of the Maltese Cross of Preston.

Postal regulations stipulated that each adhesive was to be struck with a cancellation. As a result, a multiple with fewer strikes of the MX was "contrary to regulations." Here's an example from the MX period:

(note: all the examples I'm posting are from the "CG" plate position. That's the focus of my collection)

When you only collect one position on the sheet of 240, it makes assembling a set of the numbers in MX cancellations a bit of a challenge. This is what I've been able to find over the past decade:

(sorry for the mixed condition of some of the scans).

That's a gorgeous stamp Chris! :)

Here is a much more modest one, but I was intrigued by the look of the MX. Maybe it's because of the strike that is less than perfect, but it looks just a little bit unusual to me. Perhaps someone would know more about this one:

And a much crisper, socked on the nose, cancel:

Plate 5? The sloping right leg of the 'A' seems characteristic.

Would the Neath (South Wales) franking be where the letter was sent from, or arrived at? I guess the 'SE 1' is Sept 1st?

If it is 1st Sept 1840, then it's only Plates 1-7.

I would agree, plate 5.

As it doesn't show the ray flaw or the O flaw it can only be 3, 4, 5 or 6. Of these, plate 5 is the only one with the "C" low to the left and the "A" at an angle.

The Neath datestamp could indicate either where it was sent from or sent to as letters were supposed to be stamped at the Post Town where they were posted and then again where they were received.

Given that the colour of the datestamp is very close to that of the Maltese Cross I would say it was sent from Neath.

Chris.

Interesting idea comparing the colours. Studying the original - I think they're slightly different colours - the Neath stamp is more orangey.

And, looking at "The Postmarks of Great Britain and Ireland. Part 2 Section E (1) - Maltese Cross Cancellations." on http://www.philatelics.org/reference/reference.html suggests the Maltese Cross may be a London one :?:

Thanks Chris - Dave.

I felt a bit lucky to win this lot (plus a few spares of #8 and #9) for about $1 a stamp a couple of days ago. The London numbered cancels from 1 through 12, missing the elusive #4. Mixed condition on the stamps, but some nice strikes of the numbered cancels.

Cheers,

Craig.

Most of those are great strikes of the MX. Full cancellation and upright.

I have not been able to be as choosy, as I wanted to assemble the set on stamps with my initials.
Finally got a good scan of the set.
Enjoy.

Chip,

CG must be relatively easy. :D :D :D

I'm not having much success with OI's.

Currently two blacks on eBay, one listed at just over $11,000, which I'll pass on.

Just received in the mail the 7 in MX on a 2d blue (with my initials). Gives me my fourth of that set (4 in 10 years - not a promising rate of acquisition). Gives me reason to eat well, exercise, and stay around a while.

Not an image of a Maltese Cross, but if you are interested in them, Volume 3 of the Encyclopaedia of The Maltese Cross has just been published; see here:

A couple of interesting MX pieces came through the door recently.

The Maltese Cross was phased out as of the middle of February, 1844. Plate 92 (the one used to print this strip), wasn't registered until May 1849. As such, this becomes a very late use of the Maltese Cross handstamp:

Image

Here's a strip of four cancelled by the London Maltese Cross with the number 4 in it:

Enjoy.

Appropriately enough, I found this at the York fair last week.

1d red (plate 25) strip of three cancelled with the distinctive maltese cross of York.

This came in a mixed lot of covers cancelled with Maltese Crosses.

Not in the best of conditions (with the filing folds), but it was used on 30 April 1844 (from Totness to London) which was the last day of use of the Maltese Crosses at provincial English and Welsh towns.

As today is my first Stampboard's anniversary, I thought I would share something a little special:

Image

The cover was firstly sent from Malton to York on 16 July 1842 and has a 1d red [FL] from plate 21 cancelled with a black Maltese Cross of Malton and then over-stamped with the distinctive maltese cross of York.

It was then re-directed to Great Heywood with the addition of another 1d red [GI] from plate 20 cancelled with the distinctive maltese cross of York.

This is one of my (IMHO) most interesting Maltese Cross covers.

A great cover! Especially with the York cross!
I have got this cover but without special crosses!
