I haven't seen this particular kangaroo mentioned on the thread; if he has my apologies.

Back in 2004 Australia Post decided that though he (I assume a he as I can't see a pouch) didn't warrant a stamp, his sporting prowess did deserve a Souvenier booklet be published in his honour, with aknowledgement to his forebears.

Containing five (gummed) panes of four stamps with tabs, five postcards and 20 stickers (5 designs) every page, other than the gum side of the panes of stamps and the back of the (P&S) stickers has at least one image of a kangaroo.

Image

The stickers included follow the theme of panes of stamps.

Image

My favourite postcard is this one.

That postcard is a beauty !

I always thought the boxing kangaroo was a she, "Matilda"..., but I've just had a google and I'm totally wrong there  Matilda was the 1982 Commonwealth Games mascot with no boxing gloves at all.

Brickie, very nice cover, I've seen that cachet but not with the PNG tree Roo stamp, makes a great combination !

There is a Skippy Stamp Album ending in 50 minutes.

I think our Kangaroo collectors are off line.

Currently sitting about $20.

Sorry, missed it too.

I regularly scan ebay for "kangaroo" ... never thought to search for "skippy". It's a pest when people don't put a logical search term in their heading. :?

I nearly picked up a Skippy on the way home from Qld., fortunately it didn't like the falcon, so hopped off into the darkness. BUT ..... I did pick up a hare, unfortunately it isn't going anywhere any more, might feed the two foxes who were in the vicinity though.

Reminds me of the bald bloke who had rabbits tattooed on his head ... because from a distance they look like hares.

Seriously, many people talk about hares, but mostly we have rabbits ... so what's the difference?

Differences in Physical features

There are several differences in the physical features of hares and rabbits that allow us to distinguish between the two.

* Hares are generally larger and faster than rabbits.

* Hares have longer ears and larger feet than rabbits.

* Hares have black markings on their fur.

* Rabbits are altriciali.e. they having young that are born blind and hairless. In contrast, hares are generally born with hair and are able to see (precocial). Young hares are therefore able to fend for themselves very quickly after birth.

* A young hare is called a leveret and a young rabbit is called a kitten, kit, or, least correct but very commonly, a bunny.

* Hares have very long and strong hind legs, more so than rabbits.

* Rabbits and hares both molt and then grow new hair. This happens in both the spring and in the fall. Rabbits' brown summer fur is replaced with fur that is more grey. Hares, especially those living in cold, snowy regions, turn white in the winter.

* Hunters say that hare has a much stronger, gamier flavor than rabbit (which actually does taste like a milder version of chicken).

* Both rabbits and hares have short tails.

Comparison of Lifestyle and Behavior

* Hares have not been domesticated, while rabbits are often kept as house pets.

* All rabbits (except the cottontail rabbit) live underground in burrows or warrens, while hares live in simple nests above the ground (as does the cottontail rabbit). Rabbits also have their litters underground. Hares rely on running rather than burrowing for protection.

* Rabbits are very social animals; they live in colonies. Male rabbits even fight within a group to become the dominant male. The dominant male rabbit then mates with most of the females in the area. In opposite, hares live most of the time by themselves. They come together in pairs for mating only. There is almost no fighting among hares - they just pair off.

* Rabbits prefer soft stems, grass or vegetables; hares eat more hard food: bark and rind, buds, small twigs and shoots.

My point exactly. The main differences (born furred vs naked, eyes open vs closed, colonial vs solitary, burrowing vs nesting) are not usually obvious by looking at the animal from a distance. Size is NOT a distinguishing factor, as some rabbits grow bigger than hares and vice versa.

My experience has been that most hare sightings are actually rabbits.

Yeah but once you've seen one, up close and personal, you'd never make a mistake of calling a hare , a rabbit. I might be a city boy but my father was a keen sporting shooter, as well my B-I-L ( now departed) had one living on his farm and we often saw it. Then again, it could have been a rhinoceros that I mistook for a hippopotamarse.

Ok, so I went through my very limited Aussie collection and I found a few roo stamps. I don't really know much about Australian stamps , but I'm pretty sure these are quite common stamps. This is my oldest Roo.

Image

It has a very legible postmark. Does anyone recognize it and know anything about it? :?:

This is my favorite "roo" stamp. Nothing fancy.

Lots of Kangaroo stamps will be issued in July.

There's a $1.65 Kangaroo joey in the Bush Babies set from 1 July.
Image

A kangaroo on a beach is on one of the Living Australia stamps from 5 July.
Image

A kangaroo also features on one of the Colonial Heritage stamps to be released 28 July.

The three international Bush Babies values were issued as issued as personalised stamps. Have created my own showing an Eastern Grey Kangaroo mother with her joey.

I have placed my last remaining sets in the 'For Sale' section at viewtopic.php?f=27&t=29010

Something from left field (selvedge).

I saw this in a lot at the charity.

The first of our two serious Kangaroo collectors to claim it, gets it. (It can pay to be online at odd times)

Mine, thanks. :D

Interesting item ... there's almost enough distorted kangaroo out there to start a separate thematic.

Will email tonight.

Very nice p-stamps stampchris !

You may have a second (and even third!) chance with these stamps.

First, you have four weeks to get your covers to the Post Office with the FDI postmark or the Philatelic Bureau. If you want the addresses of either post office private message me.

There's also a Kangaroo PNC coming up. It is possible that the post office named on the cancel will have the postmark available for use on covers with the Kangaroo stamp. Again private message if you want more info.

I will note that I have yet to receive my covers from either post office I sent covers to on the FDI of the Bush Babies issue - some post offices will take quite a while to get back to you. One took nearly 3 months!

With so many stamps featuring a kangaroo issued during July by Australia Post I hope nobody who has posted to this thread, or the moderators, mind me mentioning this thread in my next Stamp News article.

I've created a short web address of http://tinyurl.com/kangaroosafari to make it easier for people to enter into their browsers and access.

If there's any problems please let me know either here or by private message.

Here's the kangaroo stamp released on 28 July. Available in a sheet of 10 stamps (along with the Black Swan stamp), a miniature sheet and a limited edition intaglio printed miniature sheet.

Thought I'd add these 'stamps' as well. Issued for the North Melbourne Kangaroos Football club, these are the first self-adhesive versions of the Southern Cross stamps, with the tab printed at the same time as the stamp.

Here's the kangaroo stamp released on 28 July. Available in a sheet of 10 stamps (along with the Black Swan stamp), a miniature sheet and a limited edition intaglio printed miniature sheet.

WOW ! that is the best Kangaroo stamp yet ! Love it !!
I really appreciate you keeping us up to date with these Chris.
Off to check out auspost website

What a shame the cover doesn't have a Kangaroo theme, or postmark :(

The pack does and there's a maxicard - though you have to buy the two together.

Oh yes, the picture on the pack is great.
That design on the envelope with "Kangaroo somewhere" postmark would have been perfect.
kangaroo valley, kangaroo island, kangaroo ground...

not that I'm fussy or anything

You could always place a kangaroo stamp on the kangaroo cover and send it off to be postmarked at Kangaroo Island (assuming they have a kangaroo in the postmark) - that's one for Ozpictormarks to comment on.

Are you saying there is a Kangaroo cover ?(Kangaroo picture on the envelope) I only see the swan picture on the envelope.

I don't need a kangaroo pictormark specifically, just the word kangaroo. Although a kangaroo pictormark would be nice too.

But great ideas there Chris, thanks :D

I might print a cover and send them to all "Kangaroo something" named PO's

Sorry - I was thinking of the generic 'Australian Stamps' cover.

Have been sending out too many covers for postmarking!

G'day all ... there have been around 65 pictorial postmarks featuring Kangaroos over the years. The most recent one still in use is at Kangaroo Ground :

There are also some others you may be interested in, and it's astonishing the difference a cover makes:

And just to whet your appetite even further, here's just a smattering of some of those 65 pictorials:

Nah, they went with the swan stamp and made Swan Hill the designated postmark. :(

Once you receive them, you'll have to post an image of the covers.
