OK, my pleasure !

The first for today is:

An entire to London dated 18 October 1847 with a pair of 1d reds cancelled with the 203 numeral of Dunshaughlin

Interesting entire cmj, do the contents have much to say?

It looks as though it was sent to the future Lord Dunsany / Admiral Plunkett.

I haven't yet been able to decipher most of the handwriting yet, but there is a section relating to "the accounts", the balance of which stood at £5,530, 6 shillings and 3 pence as at Dec 15 1844. I had thought, given the date, there would be something about the famine.

I will scan the five pages in the next few days and post them on "entire heaven" for everyone to have a look at.

Seems to have gone a bit quiet on this thread so I'll offer up the following unusual item.

Image

This letter was sent from Portadown to Lurgan and is dated 5 October 1851. It is cancelled with the 375 numeral of Portadown.

The unusual thing is that it was then cancelled again on arrival with the 316 numeral of Lurgan in dark blue ink. Presumably the Post Master in Lurgan did not think the stamp had been sufficiently "obliterated".

That is most interesting. Where do you find these examples, cmj?

I have been collecting barred numerals (Ireland for preference, but also England/Wales and to a lesser degree Scotland) for a couple of years now and I suppose I have been lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time when they came up for sale either from dealers or at auction. But it is the usual perpetual searching of lists and catalogues - a few dealers do let me know when new items come in and the nicest pieces have probably come from them.

I have to admit that this particular one came from SG. I know they are expensive (and I rarely buy from them), but in my opinion that is the price you SOMETIMES have to pay for the unusual. If someone shows me a similar cover for £50, then I am going to be upset though - unless its for sale at that price that is

If anyone is wondering why all my examples are on the imperforate issues; that is all that I collect.

I have dabbled with covers in the past, here's a few from my Irish archive...

I did have serious go at collecting duplex cancellations on stamps, one from each office, I managed about 90% of England and Wales, 30% of Scotland and 10% Ireland... gave-up on Ireland in the end, it's not an impossible task but it's very close to impossible!

Chris on a similar vein to your Portadown to Lurgan cover is this sg 43 1d.red plate 192 on piece cancelled with both Curragh Camp 455 and Athy 20 diamonds.

Curragh Camp although being the largest military camp during British rule in Ireland (and still is today ),it had its own post office and it seems strange that Athy which is only a couple of miles away also added its cancellation to this example on piece, unless Athy was its destination but then it should have been backstamped with a cds type arrival mark.

I suppose i should have added to the Curragh Camp/Athy piece that it might have gone the other way Athy to Curragh Camp and the camp postmaster might have considered the Athy diamond insufficiently stamped and added the 455 diamond ,there is not enough of the piece to verify this

on a recent trip to Dublin i managed to buy 2 1d. black covers 1d. black front and 2 1d. blacks on piece and a very scarce (for Ireland that is) 1d.red from black plate 11 on piece with a Nenagh mx

pretty mixed lot no 4 margin examples but some good early red mx`s
and for a lot less than i expected to pay...is the world global financial situation affecting the price of stamps downwards? it certainly seems so in Ireland... i will post them up soon

Perhaps that is more likely as the Athy cancel barely touches the stamp. Even if it was on cover with the datestamps, it would probably still be impossible to know for sure as both would probably be for the same date given the proximity of the two.

Whichever way round it is, it is still a nice find.

I've still not given up on this impossible challenge, but it is getting increasingly difficult to find examples of numerals I don't yet have.

With that in mind I have recently finished re-organising the "Used in Ireland" section of my collection and it runs to just over 20 pages with examples of about 80 of the 438 numerals issued in 1844 plus some Maltese Crosses (red, black and blue). I was going to start posting the images (of the complete pages) on this thread but thought I would ask first as some of the items have already been posted as individual items. Don't want to be accused of repetition.

What do others think ? Should I post them ?

OK, here goes.

The pages are numbered 2 to 24 and each is split into two images (as per Glen's suggestion on posting images of full pages) to make the contents more easily readable. A few of the pages have the bottom half blank (at present) so I have not bothered including the second image. To make it clearer, each page will be on its own post.

The selection starts off with Maltese Crosses (red, black, blue and a few distinctive ones) and then goes onto the numerals (on single stamps, on piece, on pairs/multiples and finally on covers).

Probably best to leave any comments or questions until I've posted page 24.

Enjoy.

Chris.

Lovely collection Chris and well laid out and annotated

I have all the offices that you have shown (except Taulamore....where is that? (lol)

I have approx. 320 different offices these are on various Victorian issues perf and imperf and especially heavy on sg 43 and to a much lesser extent 1d. lilacs and jubilee issues with 1844 type cancellations and its taken me more than 40 years to gather this lot together and i would consider it an impossibility to complete the 564 listed in Dr.Whitneys "Collect British Postmarks"

As your collecting interests are imperfs you will find it extremely difficult and expensive to add to your collection but you like me will carry on collecting regardless, impossible dream or not.

Thank you all for the comments, just need to track down some more examples now to post those in the future. I had set myself a target of 25% of the initial numerals by the end of the year. That is 110 and I have some way (about 20) to go yet, but nothing wrong with ambitious targets !

chavander wrote:

Absolutely, but I like seemingly impossible challenges. At least I can stop at number 450 though as the chances of subsequent numbers appearing on the imperfs are virtually nil.

Flying Tiger wrote:

I am thinking about it, but probably not with the Irish ones. Probably this one:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=29524

Following some very useful advice, it has changed since I posted those pages, e.g. the front page has been re-written and the map moved onto it, but the general theme (and contents) is still the same.
