Hi Tom,

Putting your email address in your posts makes it available
to spambots. Bad idea. Maybe one of the moderators can
delete it for you.

Since its in the 'signature' line, one has to change it oneself by going into your profile details.

(By the way, just write [at] for the (at) sign and you can 'fool' the machines while we humans will know what it means.) :)

A few years ago I stuck a very ordinary cover (no contents ) addressed to Cicely Courtnidge (sic) on Ebay

From memory it fetched about £11 - quite surprising really

Regarding an earlier post about Victor McLaglen - i don't think he was ever regarded as a great actor. But his role in "The Informer" was an acting tour de force and i can thoroughly recommend the film

Picked this up in a 5.00 Ebay lot a few years ago. Saw the same seller sell a copy of this same FDC for a couple of hundred a few weeks later. I think its worth a lot closer to what I paid than that person did. I might have been worth it if it had indeed gone to the Prince but i dont think it went to the Prince. But it was sent by one of the highest ranking Moslems in Zanzibar at the time.

Here is one to Franklin D. Roosevelt while he was Governor of New York in Nov. 1932.
He became President of the United States on March 4, 1933.

Over the years, I've accumulated a few "fan mail" covers to Hollywood stars of the 1930s and 40s:

Lastly, a more modern and altogether more sinister character:

Image

Cover addressed to Slobodan Milosevic, "President of the Serb Republic" from Germany to Belgrade, Yugoslavia, 1994.

I assume the red cachet is some kind of arrival mark, but would appreciate a translation...

There are no markings or address on the reverse of the cover. No return address is unusual for mail sent overseas from Germany, but given the addressee maybe less surprising in this case.

It's a censor mark. PREGLEDANO means "examined". I can't
make out the words at the top of the mark.

One to Queen Vicky:

Image

Sent by the Duke of Nemours, second son of King Louis Phillippe of France:

Image

Dated 1844, so an early example of unpaid France-UK registered mail under the 1843 Anglo-French postal convention -- registered letters to, from, or via France were charged two registration fees, one for each of the postal systems they passed through. This meant that the French postage was doubled (in accordance with French practice) and then the standard British inland fee added. Hence charged 2s 3d = 5d British postage + 2×5d French postage + 1s British registration -- no free postage here even though it was between two important royals!

I'm not really a cover collector, but did have one addressed to Goering, and a couple addressed to Hitler.

After a quick check, I still have one addressed to Hitler.

Not really.

Anyone can write a letter to a famous person.

Getting one from a famous person is another matter entirely.

These are always a keepsake but unfortunately they were written to actors/actresses by the million. I doubt whether in fact very many were opened or read by the recipient

As iomoon says, one FROM a famous actor (if real) is another thing altogether. Some rarely come on the market as that particular actor/actress just didn't write much at all.

If they were famous, it's more likely that their secretary typed up a letter and they signed it (and I'll bet there were standard blah, blah, blah sentences in their letters as well).

I picked this up on ebay for $10.00 Letter from Joseph Pease (railroad baron and abolutionist) to his Father Edward Pease (Founder of the Darlington Railroad-first railroad in Great Britain).

quite a deal I think...

The Richard Fry (under Edward Pease) was related the Frys Chocolate family, his father was Joseph Storrs Fry. He married the daughter of Edward Pease, Rachel.

Edward Pease admired the work of Elizabeth Fry, English prison reformer, not sure if there is a connection with Richard Fry.

I think they, Richard and Rachel, lived with Edward as she was definitely living with Edward before he died (she was said to be a widow but I found that Richard remarried later :? ).

Maybe he was writing to both or Richard could have been a secretery to Edward???

The letter was to Edward. The ending says 'Ever thy affectionate son', old fashioned shorthand.

Can you read the body of the letter?

It looks like it may only be the last page of a letter because I believe the top two letters are PS

"the starch bandage has been removed and a coller with two small splints substituted. The coller extends from near the body to the ancle and allows the knee to bend considerably and is already felt to be a great relief.
They have no message but dear love to your his(?)" (also does not make sense to me)

I posted this on the Free Front thread but feel it should be here as well. No mention was made of the addressee in either the title or description of this front, indeed I only picked it up as I had entered Fife in the title or description and it was mentioned as being sent to Fife in the description. Front only to Rear Admiral Sir Frederick Lewis Maitland, Lindores, Newburgh, Fife, N.B. Maitland was the man to whom Napoleon Bonaparte Surrendered to on his ship The Bellerophon, so in my books he is famous.
