uncadonego - Thanks. I'm glad you liked the Austria railway coach stamp engraved by Wolfgang Seidel. On the stamp above, what ever happened to Santa's reindeer? :?:

Here is an image of a stamp depicting the Sondrio-Tirano stagecoach, designed and engraved by Tommaso Mele, and issued by Italy on December 7, 1969 for Stamp Day, Scott No. 1006.

I know I read it somewhere on a mini-sheet or something somewhere, but there are different versions dating back to the 4th century. Some of them even travelled on foot. One of them brought along a guy name Black Peter to punish the bad kids. Not very market friendly!

Here is an image of a semi-postal stamp depicting a mail coach leaving the Vienna Post Office in 1905. The scene is the courtyard of the 10th Street Post; the shield above the doorway bears the inscription "KK Central-letter tax-office." This stamp was designed by Austrian artist Otto Stefferl (1931-), engraved by Alfred Nefe, and issued by Austria for stamp day on November 29, 1974, Scott No. B330.

- nethryk

PS Re my previous post in this thread: The correct name for the designer and engraver of the Italy Sondrio-Tirano stagecoach stamp is Tullio Mele.

uncadonego - Thanks! Both Otto Stefferl and Alfred Nefe produced many gorgeous engraved stamps for their homeland.

Here's an image of another horse-drawn stamp issued by Austria, on September 28, 1973, to mark the centenary of the Vienna Trotting Association. This stamp was designed by Adalbert Pilch, and engraved by Maria Magdalena Laurent, Scott No. 953.

Look at all the horizontal lines in her engraving. She suggests forward motion with her choice of line direction. Very cool.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting "Machine-gun cart," designed by Yuri Kosorukov after an oil painting (1925) by Russian battle scene artist Mitrofan Borisovich Martyschenko Grekov (1882-1934), engraved by Tatiana Mihailovna Nikitina, and issued by Russia (USSR) on July 30, 1969 to mark the 50th anniversary of the First Mounted Army, Scott No. 3623, Zagorski No. 3699.

I like the way the "ether" in which they ascend has directional lines. It's always cool when the designer/engraver suggests direction with careful choice of engraved line direction. It plays with your perception, perhaps without your realizing why.

uncadonego - An excellent observation about the visual impact that a talented artist can make in designing a stamp. :)

Here is an image of another well-designed stamp depicting a chariot, a special delivery stamp printed by photogravure, and issued by Spain on June 1, 1971, Scott No. E26, Edifil No. 2041.

My grandfather delivered mail for Canada post by horse sleigh/wagon for the first 4 years (1960-64) he was with them. Tourists would make him stop so they could snap photos of him!

I guess horse delivery was long gone most other places by then. Horses were a good way to deliver mail, as the brakes didn't wear, and you were far less apt to be stuck in the mud in early spring (on the island, paved roads were scarce until the 70's). Delivery by way of horse began at 6am, and was over by noon, having covered an approximate 5 mile radius. Letters were handed in at the door to any too sick or feeble to walk to their mail box. During the reign of horses on the island (over 90% were still using them or depending on others who did until the 1950's) the vast majority of folks lived outside the towns on small farms. The houses were constructed at a central point of the property, and were often connected to the road by a long, snaking lane running close to 1km. Many such properties still exist here.

PEI has no bedrock, so gravel must be imported- roads were just a sandy clay at the best of times. In the wet spring time, most roads were an impassible quagmire to anything save horses, and tractors.

Back to the postal connection;
Many letters were franked with a 5c or 5 1c coins to cover the cost, since in a rural farming community, the only place to get stamps was the post office, and as of 1960 many rural islanders still did not have a car to get there. A trip to 'town' was often a long affair, and buying stamps simply complicated matters for folks who seldom had enough money to buy a stock pile of postage for future use.

The volume of letter mail was far greater then than now, though there were no sale flyers to deliver - (this began in the mid 80's, when Grampie retired from the post office). The mail bags would fill the whole of my grandfather's sleigh, and snowplough cuttings were often well above 6' high. There was little protection from the elements, and I can only imagine that there were many letters that reached their destination soaked.

The horses soon learned the mail man's route, and anticipated every stop along the way, and the way home. My grandfather bought his first car in 1964, as the mail routes were getting larger to service. For all that, he only shaved an hour off his delivery time as compared to going with the horses. :!:

Islander2 - Great story! Thanks for sharing. I was reminded of this stamp depicting a horse-drawn mail wagon, designed by Austrian graphic artist Koloman Moser (1868-1918), engraved by Ferdinand Schirnböck (1859-1930), and issued for use in Bosnia and Herzegovina on November 1, 1906, Scott No. 40, SG No. 196.

This one is part of a set of three issued to commemorate the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp.

It was engraved in the US, as Belgium was still recovering from WWI

The Battle of Kadesh (also Qadesh) took place between the forces of the Egyptian Empire under Pharaoh Ramesses II and the Hittite Empire under Muwatalli II at the city of Kadesh on the Orontes River, in what is now the Syrian Arab Republic. The battle is generally dated to 1274 BC, and is the earliest battle in recorded history for which details of tactics and formations are known. It was probably the largest chariot battle ever fought, involving perhaps 5,000-6,000 chariots. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a fresco at the Abu Simbel temple showing Ramesses II fighting in his chariot at the battle, engraved by Jacques Combet, and issued by France on September 4, 1976, Scott No 1467, Y&T No. 1899.
