I was surprised back in the day to see this butterfly with its mouth in a flower in spite of so much wing damage. Butterflies are tougher than they seem...

One of my favourite bug pics from back in the day. I thought this was an excellent illustration of the realities of death. See the dried out eye in the background? Life goes in without you, and the bugs take over. A living bug is better off than a dead bird.

Of course, the rotten kid shooting all the birds in my yard from his bedroom window back then ticked me off..... :evil:

This is one of the first guys I ran into after getting the screw on macro. Of course, it's not near as good as the SUPER MACRO setting on the digital, but back then it was the cat's pyjamas.

Underwing Moths are expert blenders.

Probably dust with a bit of dew from being under the lights. If he were cold enough to have ice on his body, being cold blooded, he wouldn't be able to stand or open his mouth or hold his wings up, like you see in the pictures.

I was concerned with the frost killing him though, if we had a frost overnight. That's why I released him in the morning. It gives him the whole day to orient himself and find his way home.

These poor guys get hit around here so much it's a wonder they manage to stick around. There must be an awful lot of them that you don't see.

This opossum was on the side of the road about a half-mile from my house, so I brought him home in a bag for some close-up critter pics.

These bumps on the "hands" reminded me of the spicules on the osprey foot in the Festival of Hawks thread. This looks like it is very useful for gripping.

Baby assassin bug on the stove today. Put him in the fridge for a while to slow him down. Here's how he came out of the cup.

He was only about 5mm long though, so that little body was quickly heated back up and he was quite quick again within seconds. It was so small that even SUPER MACRO could only get partial clarity.
