Another question. This stamp does not appear in any scott catalogue for some reason. The pic of Dr. Sun Yatsen is the same as the ones in the catalogues, but the side bars are different. They dont seem to belong to any province either. Can anyone help out?

This is a Post Office Savings Bank stamp, not a postage stamp. It's unlikely to show up in the mainstream catalogues.

Thank you much Tony. Mind if I ask how you know that and what on the stamp denotes that function? Just curious to know if it shows up again in my chinese collection. Al

Here are the characters to look out for:

Different Chinese fonts can be confusing to a non-reader of Chinese, but the font above is the one usually used on Republican-era Chinese stamps.

Hope that helps!

While China isn't my area, even I think I've seen the stamp you're referring to: a 50 cent green of Sun Yat Sen. If I've seen it around, I'd say it's of minimal value - but post a scan here, anyway. Maybe a China specialist will find something in it.

Thanks tonymacg, everything is worth something to me. The top right print does look a little different to what you showed previously maybe mine just has some extra ink on it.
Looks in good condition, and I can't see any hinge marks, thanks again.

That's the one I was thinking of. The differences in the characters are simply due to the different font.

No sweat Micky, you are not budding in. Its and open forum to exchange ideas. This is the greatest place to find those ideas. So, keep "budding" in. Its not the same stamp though. The side bars are different. :D

Hi seems someone here might know of these, they all have the same overprint. I read on a webpage that some of these may be worth a few dollars, anyone know?

Hi Mickey. If you have Scott, look under Republic of China, Provinces, North China. Page 254 in the 2008 Vol 2 C-F edition. Sorry to say, the stamps arent worth much in monetary figures, but nice stamps in good shape by the look of them. Al

Cheers for your help again

Micky, these overprints are a very complex area. A few are valuable, but the great majority are of minimum value. You really need a proper catalogue - relying on images from the Web is a sure recipe for disappointment. Chan's 'Colour-illustrated Stamp Catalogue of China (1878-1949)' devotes several pages to these issues. You should try to get access to a copy.

The basic stamps are hard enough--London Print, Dah Tung Print, and some others. Then the maze of overprints in Chinese...if you can't read the language, and sadly do as I do, matching characters as if they're hieroglyphs, it will do your head in.

Of course catalogue values for the Chinese area are little more than ballpark figures nowadays, helping you know is your item worth 50cents or $50. I put everything up on eBay and let buyers decide.

Oh ok aethelwulf, it is a tricky subject to collect, I will keep mine and build them up, lucky me I married a Xinjiang girl. She can read the language of course, but some of it is hard to translate back to me hehe.

Thanks anyway I will keep learning

and Mickey, you can find great deals on catalogues on ebay. I found a complete set of 2008 Scotts including the 6 regular A-Z and the specialized. All 7 for only 80.00 (US), (used) so you just have to search for deals. And, of course, I am sure someone on here would give you a deal as well, if any are for sale here. Good luck. Al.. :D

Hi apride and SB, thanks for your assistance the books will come soon in the near future I am sure, I won't sell my Sun Yatsen lot for a long time, more like build it up in a small slow way, you are very helpful thanks.
Care to check these out? I have checked a website and there is hidden marks on some but it did not explain which one is the hidden mark without line or with line in the First Character. The 1940-48 Surcharged Unwatermarked 10c on $1 Green has value, but is this the right Green and is this Unwatermarked and am I a few $$ wealthier? Those books are starting to look promising

Glad to hear Mickey. China made a lot of secret marks in their stamps. There are pages in the catalogue that deal with them. Of course, with any stamp or collection, there is bound to be something different found. One always keeps optimistic about finding that one rare item. Good luck to you and keep having fun. :D

apride hi again, yes I am being more and more encouraged to get the books :P . Now I don't want to do too wrong, but I also did not want to open a new thread on something that might be really silly. What would something like this go for in the Chinese Market these days?
I call it Chairman Mao with Cigar, you can see the normal one beside it. The stamp is not Mint but is in ok condition.

The stamp itself if probably Scott #207 (China, People`s Republic) Worth mint or used .20 As for the cigar, well, Mao should have quit smoking. May have prolonged his life.
No, I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination Mickey. If that actually is some kind of error or misprint, then it could be worth something, at least to someone. It is more likely just a flaw of some type. Maybe somebody else out there who knows a lot more? Im just reading from my Scott catalogue.

I think you are looking for the wrong secret mark. On the Pacheng Printing Company printing a small curve which looks like the letter "C" was added to the ornament below and to the left of the emblem of the sun on the $1 value.

Hello everyone, I have an interesting one I almost (seconds away that is) from putting this on Ebay for $0.99. Are the two with light colour flowers errors? I think the red flower is the original colour it does seem strange to have two stamps with the light colour in my collection that just doesn't make sense  . I only have one of the shot putter so I cannot compare colours.
Looking forward to your views and thank you.

China started the postal savings service in 1919, but until 1942 there was no specially designed stamp made for the purpose. This green one is the first specially designed postal savings stamp, now mint asks for a US dollar and used two or three ....... not totally worthless but won't make you smile.

Before 1942 postage stamps were overprinted to use as postal savings stamps. The one shown by Micky is domestically overprinted by the Kwangtung Province (Canton) on a 1942 Central Trust Print SYS 50c definitive. The current market price for mint is a US dollar.

There are a whole bunch of postal savings overprints, they are as numerous and chaotic as the overprinted definitives. Surely some of them are not cheap, can asks for 150 USD or more.

This is the 12th Oct 1948 Shanghai Overprint, the basic stamp is the 15th Sept 1942 Central Trust Print SYS one dollar. Market price, 0.5 USD.

To hit the jackpot, you need a magic "c". This is the graphic elaboration of maptrekker's words:
Image

The basic stamp is the 1944 2nd Bai Cheng Print SYS one dollar. Such will bring you more than 150 USD.

Thanks apride, I suppose it is also a good idea on what people have out there in this big old world :D . You got any ideas on the sports lot above? I don't know if it is normal or not to be two different colour flowers. I will get all my moon stamps on here shortly to get your views.

Thanks for helping

Well, as I stated earlier, I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I cannot find another colour listed in the catalogue for those flowers. The scot catalogue lists them as Scott #306-310 and states "Hibiscus red and green; inscription brown." So you may have found something there. Anyone else out there that can add their expertise to the matter and help Mickey out?

Hi apride, yes I am excitied a little tiny bit about these two colours, can't wait to hear some of the other views. I also have that cigar flaw on ebay almost time out no one bidding on it  , must be normal out there in stamp world. Oh by the way I found a website with those two stamps without secret mark and one of the 3 has a decent value unwatermarked, the thing is they all look the same in the pics  so I guess i have the lower valued ones. Those who know these stamps Know their stamps and Sisophon and you apride know your way around stamps a lot more then I ever would.

Thanks for helping I appreciate it
Still Happy :D
