Someone lined the bottom of their birdcage with these and the budgie poked holes in all the stamps.

The seller 's description:

Interesting large priority box full of Australia covers. Includes commercial, FDCs, post cards, postal cards and more. Many large envelopes with nice seten or high value franking (note that many of the latter are used 'out of period' and are more fancy kiloware than postal history). Much of interest to the casual collector, but probably too heavy to make sense for overseas mailing.

I invite member's comment on above buy.

Hi!

Here is a scan of the stamp I expect to be 6d roo blue ACSC 17g (variety "retouch second E of pence", the so called "french accent flaw"). It is CTO with original gum never hinged. I think, although the perfs to the left are not good, it`s a bargain for 80$AU due to it`s rarity, especially in CTO.

Greetings

Josto, only around 40 sheets were prepared with the CTO cancel. So, yes, quite rare.

Yes I didn't see the item first time and missed it.But still I feel it should be a bargain considering total weight of the lot( i feel not all items are scanned) and I hope to get many International Post stamps for my collection as well as many items which can be resold to cover the cost.

Lurking in a stockbook of Gold Coast and Ghana stamps acquired through an eBay auction, this appeared at first sight to be a common, King George V, 2d grey stamp (SG106). However, if I am not mistaken, the multiple script CA watermark is reversed, so that the CA reads correctly from left to right when viewed from the back of the stamp.

I see some kangaroo material in there.

When you have finished sorting let me know ... I will probably be interested in some of them.

Good pick-up, pitronix.

Catalogue value is higher than "rarity" on these - the early 1950s Federal Republic issues are relatively easy to find, but do catalogue very highly, especially if you describe and list them acurately.

I remember once picking up a copy of the 1949 30pfg UPU stamp for 3p (yes, £0.03!!!) from a dealer's "thruppenny" box

I agree with you gavin-h re value and rarity, I took this for myself so value is not important, although it is hard to pick cheaply obviously high catalog stamps since this are obvious. This guy had this mixed with some Reich and infla stamps so I actually got much more but this are best of the bunch

Plate 3 damaged S of Ash
I picked this up on Ebay for $14 as far as I know it is only the 2nd copy known.
We also found the 1st copy that Lance Skinner reported in ACCC of NSW March 2010 he wrote = without
doubt a previously unrecorded imprint from plate 3.

The ACSC only lists this in brown printings.

How is it that stuff like this never comes up when/where I'm looking? :?

Hmmm ... haven't been looking 2 years yet.

Nice find ... looks like some kind of skipped perf in the vertical lines right at the top. :D

Also, it looks like they have compartment lines ( I think that is what you call them) and top left corner of the left stamp looks strange.

Hope an expert sees this and explains all that is different about these.
Looking forward to that. Wish I had it

Ahoj Pitronix!

I think you paid a fair retail price for your card & covers.

By the way we say 'registered' in English, not 'recommended'.

A lot of toning on those German colonies. Look at the East Africa 50pf top; the 5pf bottom and left. Hopefully catalogue value is considerable to compensate for that, but for lower face values and from a larger colony I don't know if I would have bought them.

Thanks Aethelwulf, the stamps actually look better "in the flesh" than in the pics, but I'm happy with your opinions. So, have I made a good bargain? or just broke even? or worse?

I'm still happy to have these examples as I had none and can try to get better examples later. It's never easy to collect stamps when you live so far away from dealers. Ebay and stamp auctions are the easiest options and sometimes they are not that reliable...as with descriptions and pics etc.

Thanks again, Anne

Never said these were worth Catalog price. Was only telling Erik what retail was according to 2011 Scott. All I wanted to know was if $25.00 was to much to pay for these, or if that was about right. Guess I got my answer.

A lovely cover indeed and a good buy at £30 and particularly interesting. As a kid we lived across the road from the 'Alexa' and mum worked in the office during the 1950's and 60's

'Alexa' was an upmarket private hotel in its day with many of the guests being government staff and businessmen. Situated on the northern foreshore of Sydney Harbour, Cremorne Point was a quiet suburb but only about 12 minutes from the Sydney CBD by a leisurely ferry ride across the harbour. The ferry wharf was/is only a two minute walk from 'Alexa'.

In the post war years 'Alexa' was owned by the Evans and later by the Craigs and finally sold and converted into luxury units. 'Alexa' comprised two buiding, the smaller was the owners residence and a couple of deluxe rooms. The main larger building was the main private hotel complete with a pretty flash dining room as I recall.

Here's a 1930's photo of Cremorne Point with 'Alexa' marked, so it ties in nicely with your 1931 cover. The ferry wharf is just out of the picture to the lower right.

By chance is there a senders name on the reverse or letter inside. Maybe we can add a bit more to the story.

This looks to be the adressee.

Percy Ambrose Seymour (died 1954) was an Australian classicist and university administrator.

Seymour was born in Australia and educated at Ormond College (University of Melbourne), graduating in 1910 in classics. He then obtained a scholarship to study at Jesus College, Oxford and obtained a first-class degree in Literae Humaniores, then returned to Australia to lecture at Queensland University until 1921. He then returned to Oxford, becoming a Fellow of Jesus College in 1924 (a position he held until 1943). In addition to his teaching duties in ancient history, he also served as the college's bursar from 1930 to 1935, helping to strengthen the college's financial position in difficult financial conditions. Seymour then resigned his fellowship and become Vice-Master of Ormond College in 1949 (after teaching at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe for a while) and helped raise an endowment fund for the college. He died in Florence, in 1954.

asmstamps,

Thank for the extra information adds to story of the cover.

Nothing on the back which a bit of a pity.

Have to look out for a postcard of Alexa.

I am glad that I won this item.It had more than 500 covers with half of them predecimal and the decimals are mostly used within the period.Only 25% of decimals may be out of period.I donot know how much all these are worth but sure it would cross at least 10 times of the amount it cost me.

The 1/- looks creased (a shame because it looks great otherwise)

If this is the case, then the only useable stamp is the 2½d which means you paid a bit too much

What, no-one picked up a bargain in the last month and a half?

I couldn't go past this on eBay last night. I also go the NZ Show issue for $2 just to make the deal worthwhile.

I picked up this great cover recently for US $14 :D

This was the insert -

A very attractive and interesting Lord Howe Island cover. :D

Glen was selling these for $65 each in 2003, so $14 is a good price.

Whether this is a 'bargain' or not depends on your opinion really. :D

I asked about this piece months ago on Stampboards, some people said it was worthless, others thought it may have some value.

I talked to the seller and ended up getting it cheaper than his original BIN price, total cost around $5. :)

I thought it was interesting, so I bought it. I know condition is rough.

This cover I purchased ages ago for US $37 -

45c Imperforate (wide margins) Threatned Species Mouse on unopened Philatelic Cover, Australia Square NSW Postmark, 30 July 1993.

A similar (but commercial) cover with the stamp ripped out of the booklet realised $1900 at Phoenix Auctions a year or so ago.

In looking for items of usage for my Australian usages I thought that a 6d airmail solo was nice and as it was also tied by a nice 1932 paquetbot from British Columbia I thought that was nice too. For US$9 I thought it was a nice price too. I happened to also pick a nice usage of the OS overprinted airmail on a commercial registered cover with a Late fee cachet - also 1932 and a good price at US$24.

In regard to the latter can someone confirm that it is 6d postage + 3d registration + 2d for late fee. If the late fee was 2d when did it change from 1d? Also the clear date stamps on the reverse from Elizabeth Street give a time of 1.25pm, 4 May 1932 which was a Wednesday i.e. midweek, so any ideas as to the reason for the late fee?

I think you will find it is 4 x letter rate (2d x 4 = 8d) plus 3d Registration Fee, total of 11d.

Peter,
The rate calculation makes sense but what about the late fee? Where does that fit into the rate or was it charged separately to the postage?
Brian

In the 1930s all the 3d Blue commems were issued for letter rate to NON Empire countries as I recall.

Yes, 3d was the rate to the USA. The Late Fee should have been 1d, leaving 10d. Registration was 3d, leaving 7d. Either the Late fee was actually 2d and the letter is a double weight (3d x 2) or it appears to be overpaid by 1d (unlikely on business mail).

Need to delve into the rates for 1932 to see how the 7d could have been arrived at.

I know this isn't stamp related, but I thought it was a steal, and I got a laugh as well.

I was able to win a black Minolta SRT202 camera today for $39. My high bid was $40, so when the other guy bid $39 at the last minute, I exclaimed: "Sucka!"

But then I laughed when I saw what his random I.D. was:
