SOS to any USA "AAA" Members - road maps needed ASAP please!

If any USA based members can assist here I'd really appreciate it. :D

We fly to Shanghai via Malayisa for Xmas and are back a couple of days, and then fly to USA.

We fly to Sacramento CA for New Year's Eve. Then next day as long as winter snow is not bad, messing up connectiions as it usually is that time of year, we fly cross country to North Florida.

We are driving from Jan 1st from Jackonsville Florda into eastern Alabama, through Georgia to South Calorina and wind our way back to JAX a week or so later, and fly to Argentina for a day, then back home via SFO. (That is 15,000 miles in the air that 'day'! Leave on 8th and arrive home 12th with no hotel overnight involved!)

We drive only on back rural roads, and paths way less travelled, so the large fold out AAA state maps, and those nice little Hotel directory and things to see type small AAA books are really useful, and I cannot get them here.

I have some from driving this region a few years back, but current ones will be far more useful and up to date. 8)

They are free if you are a member, and if anyone can round these up from a local AAA office, and mail to our JAX hotel, I'd greatly appreciate it, and can recompense mail costs. As long as they arrive by Monday Jan 2 we are good to go.

Please add a note here if you can help, or email ozstamps at gmail.com -- thanks!

Glen

Someone suggested we can order them on-line, but as we are not members, that will NOT work!

I don't have any maps, but the Deep South is really soggy from record rains, due to a dip in the jet stream which pulls plumes of moisture northward from the Gulf of Mexico. Heavy rains flood those "back roads" you like to travel.

The U.S. website http://www.mapquest.com has maps of everywhere, for viewing or printing, various scales.

I lived in Jacksonville 16 years, 1988 to early 2005. I don't know if they have tours of Kings Bay (40 miles north of Jax), our biggest nuclear submarine base; they still have tours of Mayport Naval Station in Jax, don't know if that sort of thing interests you or not. The pro football team (Jaguars) isn't worth walking across the street for.

I will have been gone for 7 years in January, can't even think of a good restaurant for you. Jax is not a tourist town.

Glen,

You need specifically FL, GA, AL and SC? Let me see if I can round them up for you from AAA.

At least he speaks the language, sort of, more or less.

Getting "lost" in Germany in 1969 was half the fun.

A good friend of mine visiting from Ireland just had a terrible finding a "chemist" and couldn't believe we didn't have such a store where he could get something for his headache

A good thing he didn't ask a police officer. He'd still be in jail for conspiracy to purchase Crystal Meth.

I take it you drove him to the drug store, so you could pick up the pain medication you needed for your side after it was aching from laughter.

So, just out of curiosity, is the dispensing professional called a "chemist," or a pharmacist, as in the U.S.?

You guys should use "chemist". Because a drug store sounds like the sort of thing that sells marijuana and cocaine, rather than vitamins and panadols!

I dutifully Googled panadol, and find it's a high-powered Tylenol, which you can buy everywhere in the U.S., even gas stations.

But guess what? It is against the law for a parent to let a child (even 15 or 16 years old) bring Tylenol to school for any reason, if the school has a zero tolerance "drug" policy; the child can be expelled, and the parent arrested. More meddling for no good purpose. Who's in charge here?

In California...."drug" stores do sell weed!

Doug...in the UK pharmacists ARE called chemists...but don't ask me what a person with a PhD in Chemistry is called....hmm...mm

Good grief! And I think kids can go and get the Pill from the school nurse without parent consent too (whether in Australia or USA or some other countries I dunno, but that's what I hear I think!)

Our largest pharmacy here is Shoppers Drug Mart.

Drug Mart, perfect name for a Danish cafe.

They are also a Canada Post outlet, so if you worder why it takes a while to get your mail the workers are still staring at shiny things.

They almost changed thier name to Shoppers Apothacary to more align them with the modern Canada Post

Nah .. that box had someone else's JUNQUE already in it!

The closest thing I will ever have to a GPS looks like this -

Cost $20, and works fine with no batteries or tech knowledge. And lasts for years.

Well thanks to 2 North American members - dwhopper in Canada, and Timbres in USA have both kindly come to the party and rounded me up the relevant AAA books and maps.

As mail from Canada to Florida is never predicable, at any time, much less Xmas/New Year ... Timbres mailed his as well. So at least ONE packet will surely arrive!

The generosity and helpfullness of the stampboards member proven once again!

I'm glad to hear you got your map Glen, however I would not write off the GPS. Like you I have always been a map man. Then last year in Europe my son persuaded me try his GPS. I went from Fosnavag in Western Norway to Denmark, on through Germany, Czech republic, Austria, and up into the Italian Alps.

I then came back again adding Sweden to the journey. I stopped in hotels in Oslo, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Berlin, Prague, salzburg, and Livigno in the Alps. On the way home I stopped in Munich, Hanover, Hamburg, and a quite a few others until I was back in Fosnavag.

I promised my son I would try it and I did. I programed it to the direction I wanted to go, then later in the day or evening, I would pick a hotel from a selection. A phone call to confirm a booking and get the correct street address, and the GPS had me there....direct! No wrong turns, no swearing at map makers and no stress. I have never ever used a tool than made travelling as easy and comfortable as the GPS does. Never even looked at the maps I had with me after that first day!

I'll likely be back in Europe next year for a few months, and the first thing I shall make sure I have when I go travelling again is, the GPS.

Enjoy your trip.
Huanga.

You really don't want to get lost in the "Deep South" of the US as there are some things down there you just don't want to see.

I managed to get lost in L.A. and it cost me a USD100 taxi ride to get back to Anaheim.

This picture really does capture it all.

1. Pregnant Bride with Cigarette
2. The Mullet, need I say more
3. Is that a double wide in the background?
4. The Best Man....errr Dog
5. The cut-off sleeves, A.K.A. Wife Beater
6. Beer in Hand ?

The only thing not shown in that Picture is probably the Brides Father pointing the Shotgun. I can almost hear the Banjos from here

You forgot to mention the groom's high style in jeans (notice the matching pattern of the patches to the shirt), not to mention "Bucky's" teeth.

Aspirin and Tylenol don't appear to be sold here in HK. Everywhere its Panadol. Its made by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) I believe.

A school in Toronto recently banned footballs (soccer balls) and their ilk from the playground, because one parent complained about being hit by a ball while walking past during recess. Obviously that parent never played dodgeball, where the whole point of the game was to hit the other team with a ball.

I hope there's more choices than Panadol, as a Tylenol-type med (acetominophen) will affect some people's livers; aspirin's not likely to.

Aspirin products are readily available in Australia, and are also a prescribed Medecine, used as a blood thinner for many people who have a Heart condition.

Thanks again Guys ... we are now in the South and armed with all the AAA maps and goodies and not a GPS unit in sight. :)

Collected maps from Jacksonville FL this afternoon, and drove up here on the backroads to Waycross Georgia. On the outer of the huge Okefenokee Swamp, and the Suwanee (Swanny) River - immortalised in the famous Stephen Foster song.

My first job out of college took me to Ga, a suburb of "Hotlanta", which is about 4.5 hours NW of Waycross. I lived on Jimmy Carter Blvd. Don't come too much further north Glen or you'll run into that angry, white stuff :D Enjoy your travels and be safe.

For those of you who want to hear the song, "Old Folks at Home," (Suwannee River), written by Stephen Foster in 1851:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHSjLjiCQD4

1. It is not exactly dance music.

2. It is not politically correct.

3. It will depress you thoroughly for two or three days.

However, the accompanying images of wild Florida are great.

Nice one Doug.

Not dance music I agree, but nice none the less, and in the case of 2. Screw the goody goody p c gang. The slang has a historical use, and no amount of p c rubbish can change that.

......and 3. did not depress me. However that overgrown brief case would want watching.

Over the years I have purchased just over 400 CDs from two sources in the US. Each disc contains between 30 and 100 old radio programs. The programs vary from 15 minutes to 1 hour and sometimes longer. There is a great deal of slang in the programs that will have the p cers pulling their hair out. Especially the ministrel shows, but there is damm all they can do about it!

One of the British examples would be, The Goon Show, all 287 shows. Those early ones are fantastic and I dare say have the politically correct brigade there screaming at their mirrors! The shows can be found on the web.

Huanga.

Gotta LOVE The Goon Show, an early effort of Peter Sellers and others, which led straight to Monty Python. Love 'em all!

One of our local stations broadcasts BBC World Service.

You can find a list of what shows there are from these two. I see the latter of the two has The Goons up on her website now.

The park is on the border of Georgia and Florida, but mostly in Georgia it seems.

That is where these pix were taken today.

Was almost tempted to buy local Georgia peanuts in a gas station as shown, but being in full shells it looks like you need to eat them IN the shells?

I have a friend who is originally from Arkansas.
He's been making his own boiled peanuts - if they're done right they won't be too awful salty.
And they'll be soft but not mushy.
And we do shell them... I couldn't eat the shells if I tried...

Hey Doug- would you like us to send you up a large size can? Plain or Cajun

BTW I'm determined to try one....and please Stampboarders from the South, don't be offended. You have no idea how much flack Aussies have taken from Amercans over the years about our own local delicacy, Vegemite!

That's just over a buck a pound
It's better than twice that here just for the raw peanuts!
And I'll bet it would cost twice that to ship them to CA...

I'd give them a try - they're not nearly as bad as I expected the first time I tried them...
All I could think of was how bad raw peanuts taste - I didn't figure boiling them would change that.
Besides, imagine how much fiber you'll get from the shells :D

Yeah, I eat Vegemite!

Never even heard of boiled peanuts before, that's a new one. Still, it can't be quite as bad as the Icelandic delicacy - they eat fermented shark meat!

Probably never heard the old fishmongers' lament, "Sell it or smell it."

Recently retired APS Judge Jay Carrigan - "Europhil" and wife Judy, popped in for a drink today at our hotel in Charleston, South Carolina.

That's Jay on the left, and Margo on the right. :)

We only found out yesterday by chance that he was in town - 4 hours drive from their home in Hendersonville in North Carolina.

We used the AAA map to take real backwoods roads here from Aiken SC today.

Have NEVER seen so many Churches. Each hamlet of 10 people has minimum 20 Churches it appears.

Many of these flyspecks on the map have no gas stations, or stores even, but endless churches with truly wacky names : "14th Rural Evangengical Church Of Goodness and Light and Healing and Forgiveness, of Boondock South Carolina Inc. " etc

If you have not seen these places it is imposible to believe so many can exist.

The exterior signs are larger than some of the Churches!

Glen
