I saw this knocked down for a very reasonable price. $14.99 with one bidder.

I am not surprised it went for that price but am a little surprised it sold at all.

I know why. Can you se the problem?

OK, I have no clue but I'll bite: the Airmail label looks a lot more modern that the cover and the stamps.

For some reason that airmail label doesn't realy fit the time line of the stamps.

I recal to see these labels at my local post office this week

What a lovely modern airmail label. I assume it was produced after 2000.

But why would you stick it on an old cover ?

Thanks to others pointing it out, I agree it must be the Airmail label. You can clearly see the AustPost logo.

Not that I would have noticed before hand

A couple of minutes have passed and we have members supplying the correct answer. I would expect nothing more on stampboards. :D

That label was issued by Australia Post who came into existence in the 1970's.

That cover was sent in 1937.

Here is the kicker and I would expect nothing less from the seller.

The seller was stamps_fishing.

A forger he might be but he knows a bit about stamps. I would not put much faith in any of his descriptions or lots.

See this thread: Something Fishy with "stamps_fishing" on eBay! FORGERIES!!

As it's April 1st, I can see nothing wrong with this cover at all!

At the local stamp club meeting some years ago, a chap was offering for sale George V covers...Only problem was that they were on peel'n'stick envelopes
Another time a stamp dealer   ( not Mr Boggler ) offered me a Registered Territory of New Guinea FDC. When I told him that I had "concerns" with it, he studiued the post mark very carefully, and pronounced it "genuine." in all respects.
My concern was with the Port Moresby, PNG, registration label that was attached. duh duh

I did not buy it, but I believed that it was.
Perhaps the original label had been collected for the label,
but Port Moresby was in Papua, and PNG did not exist at that time.
Even dealers can overlook the obvious, by concentrating on the stamps and the cancel.
Now you have me thinking, did New Guinea use labels at that time, or handstamps with number written in by hand :?: :?: hmmnn :?

Yes, but in summer, so I will have to wait until October.
Football is the sport until then.

Obviously if you want to make a good fake you need to fake all the elements.

I just hope the commem set were horribly mounted mint - otherwise that 9d stamp is quite a nice one to be ruining on a fake cover.

Reminds me of ladyboys in Bangkok - everything done really well, the mannerisms, the face, the body, the voice - but then there's something that "sticks out" and isn't quite right...

How could anyone miss the Air Mail label -- SO modern!

They are exactly what Aust PO's are currently using.

And as for lady boys.....

Without examining the cover in the flesh I would have to say that it is genuine except for the Air Mal Label.

From memory the pre-war Air Mail rate to the U.K. was 1/6d so the rate is correct.

The Forger has been known to forge cancels in the past: Pitcairn, New Guine etc so anything is possible.

Ait mail labels were fairly small at the time, so that label could be hiding something.

It missedd being a FDC by one day. The stamps were issued on 1/10/37.
