It's an election year in France. Any additional support is good for Sarkozy, especially when the victory doesn't look certain. :)

It's fantastic Stampboards is getting noticed by a President.

Happy Birthday!

So, has anyone got any Siege of Paris ballon covers they would like to sell to a president?

President Sarkozy is a known collector of Balloon mail.

From Wiki:
"Historically, balloons were used to transport mail from Paris during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-72. Sixty-five unguided mail balloons were released in besieged Paris to communicate with the world beyond the besieging forces, of which only two went missing.

The world’s first balloon airmail service was begun out of pure necessity and carried out by the brave acts and audacity of some of France’s greatest scientists, inventors and artists. From the first announcement of the impending arrival of Prussian uhlans at the city gates, Parisians refused to capitulate. Instead, the city rallied around the formation of a new Republic and began to work out valiant replies to the question of keeping advancing armies at bay. Even after the last trains had left their stations, carefully hidden telegraph cables and foot messengers were used to pass vital information through enemy lines.

However, as an invincible iron circle closed in around the city, cleverly buried lines were cut and messengers captured, shot or turned back. At last, only the skies above the city remained open. The French term ballon monté means the balloon was manned while ballon non-monté meant unmanned.[1] Balloon mail was also sent from Przmyśl, Poland, (near the Ukrainian border) during World War I.[2]

A pigeon post was also employed during the course of the siege, with pigeons being regularly taken out of Paris by balloon. Soon a regular service was in operation, based first at Tours and later at Poitiers. The pigeons were taken to their base after their arrival from Paris and when they had preened themselves, been fed and rested, they were ready for the return journey. Tours lies some 200 km from Paris and Poitiers some 300 km. Before release, they were loaded with their despatches. The first despatch was dated 27 September and reached Paris on 1 October. During the four months of the siege, 150,000 official and 1 million private communications were carried into Paris by this method.[4]

Balloon mail was also used to overcome the communications blockade, with a rate of 20 cents per letter. Letters were photographically reduced by René Dagron‎ to save weight. A total of 66 balloon flights were made, including one that accidentally set a world distance record by ending up in Norway.[5]"

I didn't know much about this. Now I want some.

President Sarkozy is understood to have purchased this Paris Balloon Siege cover below from Stanley Gibbons Sydney auctions, for $A192,000.

He is a very keen stamp collector it seems.

I thought of collecting these a while ago, that is until I saw their cost

Some are cheaper than others as some balloon's did more trips and so delivered more letters but the rarer one's are horrendously expensive (and they rarely come on to the market).

Yes, Sarkozy has a very large stamp collection, as I reported recently -

http://www.glenstephens.com/snapril09.html

French President Collector

We all realise that having high profile people as active stamp collectors is GREAT for the hobby.

When King George V, King Farouk, and President Roosevelt were active collectors, it bought in countless millions of followers.

The current French President Nicolas Sarkozy is said to have taken to stamps in a huge way, and this is attracting worldwide media coverage.

Nicolas Sarkozy has apparently become an obsessive stamp collector, in order to cultivate a less controversial image as French President.

This is the latest bizarre insight into the 54 year old’s private life.

It has been stated that fellow heads of state including Queen Elizabeth 2 help him fill up his albums.

Private Stamp Club

Mr Sarkozy sponsors the newly formed Élysée Philatelist’s Club, named after the famous Paris Palace where he lives with glamorous third wife Carla Bruni.

Controversial Sarkozy, pictured nearby with younger new wife Carla Bruni, has apparently become obsessed with stamp collecting.

Image
Carla and Nicolas Sarkozy

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (41) is an Italian-born songwriter, singer, and former model. In April 2008, a 1993 nude photograph of Bruni sold at auction for US$91,000 - more than 60 times the estimated price.

It has been claimed that Bruni was romantically involved with Louis Bertignac, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Léos Carax, Charles Berling, Arno Klarsfeld, Vincent Perez - and even the former French Prime Minister, Laurent Fabius.

Bruni has said she is easily "bored with monogamy". Bruni met Sarkozy in November 2007 and they married very soon after on 2 February 2008 at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

Among the items which have pride of place in the Sarkozy stamp collection is a 2 stamp set issued by Royal Mail in 2004 to celebrate the “Entente Cordiale” – shown nearby.

Image
A Sarkozy Favourite

The stamps were a gift from Her Majesty when the Sarkozys stayed at Windsor Castle on a state visit in March 2008 - see nearby photo from that visit.

They are stated to be his favourite stamp set.

Schwarzenegger gift

Mr Sarkozy was also given a leather album full of stamps by California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Mr Sarkozy’s collection is slowly growing into one of the most impressive in the world because of all the international leaders he is in regular contact with” claimed a stamp club source.

“Being French president is a perfect job for a keen philatelist.”

Paris-based Gala magazine revealed the existence of the stamp-collecting club, describing it as: “an independent association based at the presidential residence.”

Mr Sarkozy is said to pursue his hobby most evenings, regularly allowing his wife Carla to inspect his albums.

Royal Stamp Gift

Carla has confided to friends that she is glad he no longer spends his evenings karaoke singing, as he used to in his bachelor days.

Before marrying Ms Bruni about a year back, the so-called “hyper-president” was notorious for inviting young woman back to the palace for “singalongs” - which lasted well into the night.

Carla has since taken credit for calming Mr Sarkozy down, finding him a personal trainer and getting him to give up once favourite high-sugar snacks like chocolate.

However despite his more relaxed philatelist image, Mr Sarkozy’s popularity rating is in freefall, as France suffers one of the worst recessions in the country’s history.

Commenting on the stamp collecting at the Elysée Palace, Voici magazine sneered: “we don’t know how the stamp club meetings are going, but they ought to be easier than the management of the financial crisis and the economy”

Obviously a great honour from Nicolas Sarkozy. I wonder now what his handle on stampboards will be. A few suggestions:

- Sarkotimbres
- PerfNico
- SarkoSage
- Fourmarginsprez

Pleb. :) As webmaster of the Great Britain Philatelic Society site I received a personal communication from King George V! (He said he actually quite likes the Machins, but is mighty annoyed with the idea of selling off the Royal Mail ...)

Glen,

I don't think RP in Port Douglas will be happy with your report. He was the underbidder on the Balloon Monte to Australia.

He wanted it for his collection of inwards Airmail covers to Australia, would have made a fantastic 1st. page but it now languishes somewhere in the Presidential palace in Paris although it may move to a new abode soon,

David yes I wrote exactly that at the time. You are 2 years too late. :)

He did not seem unhappy at all after that.

http://www.glenstephens.com/snmay09.html

=====================

On March 18 2009, Mowbrays Australia in Sydney auctioned the cover illustrated below.

It sold for an amazing $A190,800 including Buyer Premiums – nearly five times the hefty looking $40,000 pre-sale estimate. .

It is the only cover addressed to Australia from the famous Siege of Paris. It was sent out in 1870 aboard the Balloon "Armand Barbes".

That balloon coincidentally, also had on board Leon Gambetta, Minister of the Interior, who was on his way to establish the Government of National Defence at Tours.

Balloon Monte - sold for over $190,000

This cover is addressed to "L. Lamy and Co", who were importers of French millinery goods, in Pitt Street, Sydney. It reached Sydney on the "RMS Rangoon" via Suez.

This cover was part of a superb France collection belonging to legendary collector W.M. Holbeach.

He was well known in the 1940s to 1960s for his fabulous collection of Australia Commonwealth which was auctioned by Christies in the 1970s.

I have learnt the telephone under-bidder was a well known Melbourne collector, who apparently wanted the item for his collection of: "Inwards Airmail Covers to Australia". It would have looked nice on his first page.

The buyer flew out from France just for the sale, and took the cover back with him to France.

I am advised via generally reliable sources that French President Nicolas Sarkozy requested an auction catalogue.

President Sarkozy has turned into a manic stamp collector it seems – as reported in detail in my column last month.

My guess is that if he does not own this cover now, or a French Institution does, one or the other will occur soon.

With total sales of $810,000 at this Mowbray’s sale, the “global financial crisis” seemed like something from another world.

It simply confirms and reinforces the long held axiom that stamps, coins and collectables traditionally do well during time of economic duress.

Ah! But can you be sure it is only one, one that you know of.

Well, I'm a former President of the Lytham St. Anne's Philatelic Society

And I still think that Scotland Yard intervention was un-warranted and harsh.

Yes Glen - I agree

A Restraining Order would have fitted the bill better

And those handcuffs were totally over the top, given the fairly modest amount of money involved I always thought.

I blame Hollywood.

Lytham is hardly Chicago, after all.

I heard there was a coup at Lytham, fortunately it was a bloodless one.

So philately is more than the Hobby of Kings, now we have a President. I've quickly scanned through my posts and am relieved to note that I haven't said anything unbecoming either in relation to the Republique or to the President and his lady.

I am a bit peeved however about the Presidents comment in relation to Oz cyclists performance in the Tour de France- I mean, how long has it been since a frenchman won the classic? (It was 1985)

Spaniards and yanks seem to have had a monopoly on the podium for quite some time.. Indurian, Armstrong, Contadour with an odd one or 2 others thrown in (plus one Australian)

If a frenchman does not win, then surely the President should support an Australian, after all La Perouse arrived off Port Jackson on the 24th Jan 1788 and if he had been quicker, we would be a french department and speaking french. (Mr President, please don't spill your morning coffee thinking about what might have been)

I hope he scans some of his siege mail collection onto Stampboards
