Hello, everyone.

Does anyone happen to recognize this stamp? I suspect that it is not a postage stamp.

My best guess is Turkey, but I've been wrong once or twice before. :D

As you can see, it has the added attraction of a badly shifted overprint.

It is a very common revenue stamp of Ottoman Empire (Turkey pre-1921). If I remember it right, this one was used on newspapers.

The overprint is not overprint, but some text written in Armenian.

Regardless of condition, it is of no real value, I´m afraid.

Thanks for the identification, ikanek. I wasn't really concerned about value, just identification. I figure that if it is in my hands, then it is highly likely that 'no' is the value. :)

Is there anyone out there who can translate the Armenian?

By the way, ikanek, I see that you are in the Czech Republic... some of my favourite stamps are the Czech art stamps from the mid 60s, 70s and 80s.

Is it in Scotts? I checked when Ralph's first post came out (2002) and didn't find it. Did I miss it?

Definitely not an expert so didn't say anything.

Hi, Vicki!

Nice to see you're checking in.

No, these kinds of stamps will not be in Scott's as they are not postage stamps.

Surely nothing can be found in Scott, Michel, Yvert or SG as they list only postage issues. For some countried, they also list revenue stamps but ONLY if they could be used for postage.

For Turkey and some surrounding area (Cyprus,...) there is McDonald catalog easily available.

I am glad that I didn't miss it...but on the other hand...I thought those 6 volumes I bought were a little more in depth. I just haven't had a chance to check yet!

No need to feel embarrassed,Vicki.

Revenues, though they look like stamps, were used to show payment of fees and taxes and the like for documents, cheques, etc.

Scott is only interested in postal usages.

Are you still going to make it to Hanover?

Ralph

The show's still five weeks off so hopefully things will be better for your daughter and her truck by then.

And if you're ever up visiting on the first Tuesday of the month, drop in to a Saugeen Stamp Club meeting.
