Glen,

what this proves is that you should get the time differential fixed,

You made the post on April 1st. 12.01 but it shows as 11.01 March 31st.

I think that you'll find that it's your settings David and not the boards.
Try correcting your daylight savings box. Actually it's now probably corrected itself as daylight savings ended on Sunday morning.

My system says the time is exactly correct.

Well done Glen, though for those of you who are speaking Royally of M. Sarkozy, let's not forget that the French are champions of Republicanism.

When I published The Stamp Collector some years ago (and you were a regular contributor and advertiser Glen), among my subscribers was former head of the International Olympic Committee, the late "Don Juan Antonio Samaranch y Torelló, 1st Marquis of Samaranch, Grandee of Spain"...

Image
A stamp issued by Bosnia & Herzegovina
on September 20 2007 in honour of
"I.L.H. International Ambassador of
Sport and Culture of Peace
- Juan Antonio Samaranch"

A somewhat controversial figure, Don Antonio Samaranch as he was more widely known, was president of the IOC from 1980 to 2001 and passed away in 2010. He is said to have run the IOC complex in Lausanne along the lines of a kingdom within Switzerland!

Samaranch insisted that he be addressed with the title of "Your Excellency" during his tenure as IOC president and demanded a chauffeur-driven limousine and a presidential suite in the best hotel of whichever city he was visiting.

The IOC is understood to have forked out US$500,000 a year for a presidential suite for the occasions when he stayed in Lausanne – which weren't that often really since he was always traveling somewhere, and always in first class of course. The Don was real stamp royalty!

Recent Olympic Games have had attached to them a stamp exhibition, called Olymphilex and I am sure, as a collector, the Don would have had a hand behind this initiative. I remember around the time of the Barcelona Olympic Games, I received a letter from the Don commenting about an article in The Stamp Collector that another regular columnist, Richard Breckon, had written about Australian Olympic Games stamps. If only I knew where that letter was today...

Of course the first place Sarkozy goes for a titter, is the GOMC saga. The most widely used thread on SBds. ( apart from introductions/ counting type threads, etc.)

Either you guys are great at playing along, or Glen has totally owned you with his April fools joke!
There are a couple of obvious exceptions of course.

Well, now that you mention it - it does appear this thread was started midnight of April's Fool's Day.

There is no question that Sarkozy is a keen stamp collector.

There is no question he was chasing the Balloon Monte cover sold here at $190,000, and did phone Gibbons here for a sale cat.

It is also true that it has been claimed that Carla Bruni was romantically involved with Louis Bertignac, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Léos Carax, Charles Berling, Arno Klarsfeld, Vincent Perez - and even the former French Prime Minister, Laurent Fabius.

1all that detail in the press reports above is 100% correct.

However, I am not permitted to confirm or deny that our talented graphics member Allanswood might have created this -

Image
Image

He is slightly nervous he might spend the rest of his days on St Helena, or be the Star Foreign Attraction the next Bastille Day Celebrations if he owns up, so right now denies all knowledge of it. :)

Image

However, theoretically supposing just for one second that Allanswood did create it, there are enough deliberate clues in there to let Inspector Clouseau to denounce it.

[Getting Serious About Jokes]

While the convention / tradition of April Fools Day is that the joke stops at midday on April 1st (or whatever...), that convention predates the internet by several millenia (ask the caveman who was told there was a sabre-toothed tiger standing behind him at 12:01pm on 1 April, 1 million years BC*...).

If we strictly adhered to the "12 hour" rule (or its Danish equivalent - the "no later than 2nd April rule"), a lot of members who only log in, say, twice a week would miss out on the fun.

And would you stop it at midday 1 April Sydney time, midnight 2 April Copenhagen time, or run it all to Greeenwich Mean Time?

All in all, keeping these things going for, say 4-5 days seems perfectly reasonable, and is pretty much in line with how we run polls, competitions etc here on Stampboards to give maximum exposure for the maximum number of members...

[/Getting Serious About Jokes]

I think after that effort, we might have to look at The Imposters, GOMC status.

But it was well done in true GOMC fashion. Who knows the truth anymore?

I've been a little quiet today. There was a black Peugeot parked out the front when I got home and 2 smartly dressed gentlemen from the DGSE came to visit.

They apologised for being tardy in their response and would have found me earlier, but their GPS unit had no information for "Goulburn", it kept telling them to drive off the nearest bridge. They suggested that a "holiday" on St Helena might be in my near future, however after having a look around Goulburn, decided that St Helena would actually be a holiday in comparison! The arogance.

I mentioned that their ties were very swish and sat them down for a proper coffee and a crumpet (I was out of croissants). After driving down from the embassy in Sydney, they looked like they needed one.

Anyway, upshot is that the letter contains no security threat's that they could decipher, was quite truthful after all, the President did have a jolly good laugh l and if I ever do it again I would be shot from long range.

The French secret service however was not impressed by my French revolution mail. They turned their noses up at my selection of covers. Then again I think their noses were already naturally turned up anyway. Minions have no taste or class. :P

How come every time you hear "I can neither confirm nor deny..." that it always means confirm? And who gave the DGSE my address?????

Now the quick quiz... what about the letter is not real? :D

The letter does exist.

Australia actually does have a new team in the Tour de France called "Green EDGE". Competing for the first time this year. :D

Allanswood, the letter is very good indeed. The giveaway was the quote 'Viva la France', or at least that's what I thought I read. It seems to have since been corrected to 'Vive la France'. :D

I immediately wrote a post congratulating Glen on the good joke. He promptly (and rightly) zapped my post just as I was trying to amend it so I wouldn't give the game away. The Sheriff is fast!

It was clear for me that this is another well-done Glen´s April Fool (as well as Moonlight Green variety last year - which I sent a post which was very soon "removed").

One suspicious thing for me was the presence of small font indicating the location of file. :D

Three possibilities for 'errors' in the letter.

1. in the email address is .gouv. correct or should it be .gov. ?

2. the file details at the bottom is a mixture of French and English. Would the President have a sub-folder called 'letters' ?

3. I know you have already answered this but ..... no countries have a team in the Tour. GreenEdge has Australian owners but it is very much an international team as are all other teams.

A very nice April 1 contribution. :)

1 - .gouv.fr is the correct web address. :D

2 - Hmm, must shoot my French translator or my keyboard, Letter should be Lettre.

3 - Technically yes/no. Everyone knows that certain teams are referred to by their sponsors and the country they are from. Wasn't the original idea to have countries entered as teams.
All the teams lists that I look at will tell you the country of each team, be they Dutch, French, Spanish, Russian etc. The major sponsor will sponsor their countries team.
You don't need to be from that country to ride in the team.

Thanks for that. I am non the wiser re the deliberate mistake.

As far as the Tour is concerned the situation is quite clear - you compete for your country at the Olympics, you compete for your country at the World Championships but in all the big tours you compete for a non-national team. Anyway, that is obviously not the deliberate mistake so will look again.

There is also a wrongly placed apostrophe:

"Stampboard's fifth birthday" should be "Stampboards' fifth birthday".

If that "easy on the eyes" female tennis player who is a stamp collector were to join up, half the GOMC would have heart attacks from the excitement of her offering to "show them her treasures".

Rather than "Le Président de la République", it is "Président de la République française"?

As President of the French Republic, he would use different stationery (not the liberte * egalite * fraternite letterhead - which is the French Government letter head)?

There is nothing suggesting that Carla Sarkozy is anything other than a "Stamp widow" - does she really read the GOMC thread over morning coffee?

(Wikipedia confirms address as "55 rue du faubourg Saint-Honoré 75008 Paris, France")

I agree.

Thanks Greg !

I hope you keep doing it.

It is fun. A good laugh at my own expense is always healthy.

I think it is pretty amazing how many people can pick the small faults AFTER it has been pointed out publicaly that it was an April Fools joke.

I can pretty well guarantee you will get at least one bunny each time - me!

Two. I took it in hook, line and sinker. The genius behind successful April Fools Day jokes is that they are believable .

Good one.

A bit late for error spotting but...

It says at the top of the letter "Le President de la Republique" and NOT "Le Président de la République". If you're French, you don't miss the accents off.

* Yes, I know - poetic licence employed in the timings....

I browse the 'view new posts' page every day (except when I have been laid low as earlier this week) and today, Friday 6th, is the first time I have seen this thread on page 1!

It actually stayed on page 1 for about 48 hours.......which in "April Fool's Joke" time is about 36 hours longer than I thought it would. 8)

I don't know how view new posts works on your side of the world, but I don't think it's been off page one all week. :D
How many new posts do you have listed on your page one?

Like I said, I was unable to spend any significant time browsing earlier in the week and answered only a couple of messages about the 5th birthday prize.

I have no idea what your on about. I can't find that you said anything about the article bar some cryptic reference to "dark places", whatever that means.

It seemed to have caught you out according to your post on 2nd April -

(Congratulations Glen - Stampboards has been noticed. Should you now put Royal before the name....www.RoyalStampboards.com - yep you could live with that)

Ok you mention dark places on your 4th April message, but that's all so cryptic.

Anyways it's not about who got caught out or not it's about the effort made to have fun and at end of day if there had been no April Fool fun we'd have moaned about it.

Well done Greg, the April 1st Stampboard spirit lives on.

Last year we changed the Board into a variety of very pretty colours, and everybody moaned about it.
