Hello everyone.

Here is a really nice cover. I love exotic stamps on cover like this one of the Thai Royal Barge. It was carved from a single teak log. That must have been one magnificent tree!!

Ralph Hi

Your cover was looking a little lonely so I thought I would add a modern Thai of my own.

The Royal Barge stamp has proved extremely popular in Thailand and I have seen it on sale in many tourist spots as a souvenir rather than a stamp for collectors. I think I am right in saying that the THAI Post Office has issued several further similar designed stamps due to the popularity of the first one.

I seem to remember that there is also a sad story connected with one of the Royal Barges. In days gone by it was forbidden for a commoner to physically touch a member of the Royal Family. The Queen, who was a non-swimmer, was on one of the Royal Barges when it sank. Although all the crew could swim they were all too scared to help the Queen and as a result she drowned.

Thanks for taking notice of me, Sark.

That is a very elegant bridge.

I see that the issue is also a joint one with Australia. Did Australia have a connection with the bridge, or did it just seem like the 'Friendship Bridge" was an appropriate symbol for an expression of good will between nations?

That is a sad story about the Queen drowning. I guess that's one problem with elevating yourself too far above your fellow man. Makes me wonder if any of the crew suffered as a result of the sinking. No time to investigate right now...

Maybe I'll start a "Show us your very large format stamps" forum some time. They're especially interesting if you can find them used. It was a chance encounter with a used copy of Spain's 1981 'Guernica' stamp, a rather large one, that got me started writing topical articles for our stamp club newsletter. I laughed when I first saw the stamp, but after researching the painting by Picasso, I'd have to say they did well managing to make the stamp as small as it is!

Regards,

Ralph

Nice covers :)

Maybe the title should be edited to

Share your Thai covers

or something like that.

Thanks for the suggestion, Matt. The one I posted is my only Thai cover, but I would be happy to change the title in the hopes of being able to admire more of them. How is it done? I had a quick look, but could not find the way.

By the way, I saw a ship from Valetta here in the little Great Lakes port of Goderich, on Lake Huron, taking on a load of salt at the mine that is located at the mouth of the harbour.

Ralph,

You have one hour to edit the title after you do the first post, but after that only the moderators can edit it. I'm sure one of the mods will edit it eventually.

And yes, there are a lot of ships registered in Valletta. These are just a few examples (out of 1000s):

Ralph Hi again

The friendship bridge was a three way project because it linked Thailand and Laos but was paid for by the Australian Government $A42million and the project was managed and built by a couple of Australian Companies.

The only other Thai item I have a scan of at present is this example of a Rama 5 - King Chulalongkorn 4 Atts P.S.Card used from Luang Prabang the royal city of Laos which at the time came under Siamese control.

Here is one to add to the thread. Posted in Bangkok on 12 December 2518 (1975), and a number of stamps to make the 9 Baht postage

That's one more Thai cover than I have, Sark. :D

Thanks for the bridge information.

And you were quite right about a moderator changing the title for us. (Thank you, Wolfgang)

Now, if some of our friends out there will post a few covers ...

Mod Note: One further little edit made to the title. Of course it could read Thailand/Siam/Thai covers", to encompass Thai stamps used in Laos, Battambang (Cambodia) and the Malay states which Siam had control of for a time, but that would be splitting hairs and get messy. Adding Siam to the title might help this thread get some google hits from people with older Thai stamps inscribed Siam who don't know what they have.
