Thanks for the scans --- 4 have been added to the database.

The Five Ways mark I have filed for later checking as I also have in my mind that there was a location of this name at Bristol as well as the Birmingham that Ian has noted.

One I can get some confirmation in the way of supporting scans - the details will be added

Thanks ....

First a suggestion and a couple of queries.

I think the KIRKCALDY mark on page 7 of June 3rd 2011 is clearer and more complete than the one in the database. What do you think?

Agreed --- this has now been changed

Quote:
Secondly the HULL & SOUTHAMPTON paquebot on page 17 of 28th January 2012 seem not to have been included. Were they excluded for a reason or did you just overlook them?

Can't think how or why I missed them - but they are now in place ...

Everything to this point is now in place ....

As mentioned in a previous post, these are from the collection of a friend of my wife.

They are all postmarks commemorating the wedding on 20 November 1947 of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten with the initials "E" and "P", ribbons and wedding bells.

Birmingham / - A -
26 November 1947. "E P"

Image

Birmingham / - H-
27 November 1947. "E P"

Image

Epsom / Surrey
27 November 1947. "E P"

Image

Highgate / N.6.
26 November 1947. "E P"

Image
Highgate is in north London. It is posssibly most famous for its cemetery where Karl Marx is buried. Or for the same cemetery where Rod Stewart worked as a grave digger.

More EP postmarks to follow.

I'll post up the rest of the postmarks from my wife's friend's collection.

As with mine, I've scanned and stored them so that they come out in alphabetical order of the place where they were postmarked.

Allestree Derby

Blackburn / Lancs
19 July 1988. Single circle handstamp with "K / date / Blackburn / Lancs".

Image
This is a first day use of the Armada strip of 5 X 18p stamps (only two shown here). It was a publicity freebie from Kellog's of cornflakes fame, hence the trademark "K".

World Cup 1966 FDC - only 50p it says sometime after decimalization in 1971. "Middx" is (of course) Middlesex, the Wembley bit connects it to the football World Cup of 1966.

What a great name for a small town :!: It is in Nottinghamshire. Lord Byron is buried there, as is his daughter Ada Lovelace the world's first computer programmer.

Huddersfield is now in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire, halfway between Leeds and Manchester.

One of the nicest IMHO of the regional designs.

Intresting site which as it develops will add to the information avaliable.

The single impression dies, as used with the wavy lines or a slogan, are fitted with a counting device. In this way a record of the number of items passing through the machine per hour or per day could be recorded. It was in this way that when required, a close check on the mail posted in any area could be undertaken, and it is for the same reason that these machines were chosen to use with the "diamond" dies.

Once a year, a detailed census of postal traffic is carried out and this usally takes place in October. The census covers letters posted at, recieved at and fowarded via the particular office and also covers any counter buisness.

When the single impression machines are used for this census, they are fitted with the "diamond" die and are used for counting mail for delivery or forwarding. Mail that is posted into the office is date-stamped in the normal way in order to show the origin of the item, date of posting, etc...

The dies are often impressed on the back of the letter or at the lower edge on the front. In many cases the "diamond" is used alone without the wavy lines or a slogan.

At some office, however, it seems to be common practice to employ the "diamond" with the current die in the machine - either the wavy lines or the slogan in use at the time.

In additon to this there are known cases of the "diamond" with a slogan cancelling stamps and this seems to be mainly confined to circulars.

There are also two types of the "diamond" die. One appears as a square rotated 45 degrees whilst the other is the same height but narrower - being more of the true diamond shape.

I hope this information is useful - please feel free to use as you see fit on your site.

ALLAN

Sorry for the delay in answering. There was a great stamp show in Victoria over the weekend and picked up several more postal census covers.

Thanks for the information - I will work it into the Postal Census page. You can see from the list that the census was usually taken in October but a fair number were taken at other times of the year.

I will continue to look through ebay and delcampe auctions or any other source to find and save the images for this survey of postal census covers.

Allan, is there a physical collection of postmarks somewhere, associated with the database?

If so, I will donate the Mold, Tuam, Five Ways, etc., posted on Sunday, March 18.

The Kellog's factory is at Trafford Park in Greater Manchester. The cover is presumably a freebie from a Kellog's advertising campaign, but it doesn't say so anywhere on it. I posted a different Kellog's freebie cover earlier which was postmarked in Blackburn.

Postmarks from Milton Keynes. Milton Keynes is a new town in Buckinghamshire about 79 km north-west of London. It was formally designated as a new town on 23 January 1967. The Borough’s population in 2009 was estimated to be 241,000.

Milton Keynes
27 June 1979. "Visit of the Queen to / Milton / Keynes / Milton Keynes 27 June 1979" frameless circular handstamp. There are two logos included in the design, the left hand one I can't identify, the right hand one is for the 10th anniversary of the Open University (OU) which has its headquarters in Milton Keynes.

The symbol on the left was the logo of the Milton Keynes Development Corporation.

I am having a little trouble finding out where this 495 Field Post Office was used, maybe someone can help out?

I cannot find it in my new Collect British Postmark book...

Not sure if you have an image, so here is one.

Thank
Paul

I am not a postmark collector, but I saw a reference to BFPO 495 NP 1005 Den Helder, Holland. Does that help?
