Just one of those random thoughts.

I'm nearly sixty, and a smoker. When I was a lad, virtually all men and a good proportion of women smoked.

In my forties, I noticed a distinct drop in the number of smokers, but the trend seems to be upwards at the moment, especially amongst girls.

There is a poll. :D

I well remember going to the pictures every week, in Scotland, and having the ashtrys FULL of butts, and the projector light struggling to shine through the fog of smoke in the theater
It always amazes me that there were not more Fires and 1000,s of people killed,
I stopped smoking finally about 37 years ago, when I was minding my son one day, I stepped out to the kitchen to turn the kettle off,and on my return to the lounge, discoved he had pulled himself up to the edge of the coffee table, and got into the ash try.
His face and hands were covered in ash, as was the table and the carpet,so I set to and cleaned everything up..before the Boss found out,,
BUT on changing his nappie about 2-3 hours later,lo and behold there for all to see, were two Cigarette butts,
So I thought NO MORE, and decided to quit then, and have had no desire to start again,
By the way, my son does not smoke today either, never has, except for those 2 butts,

I must admit, even as a smoker, pubs are better without the fug of cigarette smoke. You also meet new people when you are outside in the mutual chittering party. :D

Although I answered non-smoker < 40, I used to smoke, gave it up just over 2 years ago before my youngest was born.

Maybe there should have been an Used to Smoke selection....

I have NEVER smoked, when I met my wife (to be) who DID smoke, I used to refuse to kiss her or anything else if she smelled like a chimney, so she stopped smoking and we ended up getting married a couple of years later....

Also a non-smoker < 40.

Of course then there's one of the worst bar pick-up lines ever: "You're smoking!...Smokin' hot"

Smoked when younger as pretty well everyone did in my age group.

I fly an awful lot long haul as most members know, and always have - 100,000+ miles a year.

When I first started doing that, smoking was entirely legal on planes.

15 hours of that to Los Angeles was a real issue. Amazing it was alowed really now you look back on it.

Anyway it used to irritiate me and little wonder so I gave up smoking decades back.

is there anyone more anti smoking than an ex smoker?

I was 25- a day back in my younger days ------gave up spontanouesly on a 12 hour flight across the Pacific Now I hate it and can't stand the smell of smokers near me!

Incidentally can anyone help translate this slogan from New Caledonia?
Image
I Know what it means--- " keep the workplace tobacco free" /world non smoking day. but google translate does not make sense of
" Franchissons le pas"??? Literally please ?

It's something like, "Let's take the step" or "Let's give it a go".

"Franchir" suggests getting over an obstacle.

Yes, there should be another option for those trying to stop. I have been a smoker for 25+ years and have decided to stop. Today is day 2 with no smoking and thank goodness for Chantix !!!!

I've fumed and I've steamed, but I have never smoked.

My mom and brother never smoked either. My dad used to smoke a pipe when he returned from WWII. One day it was in his back pocket and he sat down and broke the stem. He never smoked again.

Guess we are a lucky family in this regard.

I have never smoked, nor did my parents. My daughter, however, does smoke (including during pregnancies!). I suspect it was a peer pressure thing (she is rather susceptible).

I catch a train in the morning with someone who smokes a cigarette just before boarding and another immediately on getting off to change trains at Richmond Station (only around 30 minute trip). I suspect he smokes every chance he gets.

I can't stand cigarette smoke, it causes my eyes to water. Since nobody is allowed to smoke in offices any more, I find myself walking through a smoke haze every time I enter or leave my office in the city. Extremely annoying and inconsiderate of the reekers!

Good luck with that.

Just remember, however you try and manage it, it ALL comes back to one simple statement: "When you want a smoke, don't have one"

I smoked for 20 years and it's over a decade now since I stopped. Trust me when I say you WILL feel the benefit and it WILL get easier with time. It's also probably the most difficult thing you'll ever do - so there WILL be hard times with it, but in the end it WILL be worth it...

Good luck, and if you feel you need any support feel free to email me if I can help. 8)

Gave up smoking when I was in mid thirties.....& now am probably the world's worst for getting miffed when other's smoke drifts my way.

Oh, and the pub's a much more pleasant place to go now that there's no "fug".

gave up last year, after 36 years of smoking (average of 25
cigarettes per day) because two cousins (of same age as me) died of
lung cancer, probably due to heavy smoking

Thanks all as I had forgotten about this thread. I am pleased to report that it has been almost 3 months now since my last Cigarette. I have joined the health club with my Wife and together we work out and exercise 3 times a week. It's been tough to adjust to the weight gain as Cigarettes raise your metabolism and also act as an appetite suppressant.

I gained 25 pounds in the first month but have sweated 10 of that off. Looking forward to the end of Winter here so I can resume my outdoor activities.

I was a 20 a day smoker until just over a year ago.

I got pneumonia and ended up in hospital. I was so ill I couldn't walk so that seemed a good time to stop.

A year later I'm glad I stopped but still occassionally enjoy walking along the pavement behind someone who is smoking!

I'm an ex-smoker. My father and my grandmother smoked.

My grandmother died of lung cancer on world no tobacco day  (it wasn't world no tobacco day back then though)

Cheers,

I would LOVE to quit smoking, but I just don't know the best approach. It's become such a huge part of my routine, that I don't know how. Any advice from quitters would be much appreciated.

Chantix worked well for me but it requires a prescription. Instead of the weening process this drug actually goes after the Nicotine receptors in your brain and works surprisingly well. After 1 week of quitting I had almost forgotten about Cigarettes.

Agreed.

Over two years ago I quit smoking. I was a smoker for 31 years. Willpower and Wrigley's Doublemint chewing gum was the cure for me.

I was going to post this in the 'punch in the face' thread but I think it is more germane to this discussion.

I simply must question the true motives of people who walk past a group of smokers while outdoors and ostensibly wrinklle their noses in disgust and wave their hands as if trying to clear the air...and to be frank, sometimes I'd like to punch them in the face.

These are the same people who would never dream of expressing displeasure at the stench of an unwashed vagrant or the wild aromas coming from ethnic restaurants because that would be politically incorrect and the smoke nazis are dyed-in-the-wool PC to a person.

Smokers, being just plain folks with an unhealthy (yet legal) habit and no agenda pose an easy target for hysterics to villify and enough is enough.

Smokers have been driven out of the buildings into the fresh air...you don't like smoke? Hold your breath, cross the street. Otherwise...it's just too damn bad.

This is the kind of thing I was referring to:
http://now.msn.com/living/0418-forth-wo ... g-ban.aspx

It is illegal and discriminatory to ask someone if they are HIV positive on a job application but lets hang the smokers.

I slipped and fell down a rocky incline years ago breaking a few ribs. As was the practice then, I strapped my backpack on as tight as I could to hold the ribs in place, and spent two days walking out from the Greenstone valley.

When I eventually got back to my base, my Doctor informed me the combination of broken ribs, an over tight backpack and in his opinion......smoking all contributed to the heart attack that I though was just a side effect of the ribs!

I have never smoked since, never missed them, and estimate I has deprived the tobacco industry of a dollar sum in the region of in excess $45000!

Yea, in the Industrialized Countries I think it is becoming unpopular, even though in Austria young people smoke quite a lot which surprised me when I came over here.

In developing nations smoking is still considered "cool" and females (girls) are now catching up with males in smoking, which is making the number of smokers even higher than earlier. Coming from a developing country, I must admit that almost all of the guys I know from my generation smoke, while the number of girls I know from my generation do not smoke that much.

I suppose if you are keen on a girl that smokes, and you don't. Then you either walk away. or get used to herring!

I used to smoke a bit when I was younger, especially when partying. When I was around 20 years almost everybody smoked while partying for some reason, why I don't know. But these days I don't smoke, except for the odd cigarette while drunk with friends that smoke.

How about members post some images of stamp issues related to smoking?
Should be interesting to see what we can find regarding either images of
famous people with cigarettes or "Stop Smoking" campaign issues.

Cheers

Although, of course, it is actually not a cigarette holder she has in her mouth. :D

Peter is right, the original pic was with sunglasses, but the photo was altered to make it look like a cigarette holder.

Let us burn one
from end to end
and pass it over
to me my friend
burn it long, we'll burn it slow
to light me up before I go

if you don't like my fire
then don't come around
cause I'm gonna burn one down
yes I'm gonna burn one down

my choice is what I choose to do
and if I'm causing no harm
it shouldn't bother you
your choice is who you choose to be
and if your causin' no harm
then you're alright with me

if you don't like my fire
then don't come around
cause I'm gonna burn one down
yes I'm gonna burn one down

herb the gift from the earth
and what's from the earth
is of the greatest worth
so before you knock it try it first
you'll see it's a blessing
and its not a curse

if you don't like my fire
then don't come around
cause I'm gonna burn one down
yes I'm gonna burn one down

I watched my father lose 30 kilos due to lung cancer, effects lasted 5 months hacked every day morning to night had to drain fluid from his lungs every day. Effects of smoking are shocking.

Died at age 65. Neve saw granchildren.

Please give up smoking today.............

I smoke and enjoy it. The problem is that its a way of giving people somthing to worry about, if you want to save your lungs never take your first breath.I remember the pea soupers when you couldnt see your hand in front of you. I spent my childhood by the pits and all the coal dust. There is a very good article from Chemistry World called hold your breath. Look up their websight. You think that smoking is the problem then stop driving as well the particulates you generate are even more harmful.
The one thing I can guarantee is your going to die so stop fretting because stress is the biggest killer of all.

Talking of Cancer it dosent necessarily kill you, it depends on the rate and type. The funniest thing I can remember is an elderly man who had a dreadful cough, the young doctor told him he should stop smoking, I cannot repeat the answer but it was to the effect I am 92 I have been in two world wars and what have you ever done.
Going back to the office I asked young doctor when the Xrays had arrived he showed them to me and said see. Oh dear I said that is shrapnel from the war and dammage from gas.

In my opinion, the anti-smoking lobby has crucified itself.

At best there is a 'casual' link between smoking and lung cancer. CASUAL. Note the word carefully,
.

There is a 'casual' link between driving and road fatalities.

There is a 'casual' link between old age and dementia and Alzheimers.

Thers is a 'casual' link between sex, breathing, water, stress, lifestyle etc and cancer

Doctor's are not GOD. They do the best that they can given the information that you give to them and so you must be clear and concise ...and questions what they doctor says.

I take statins for high cholesterol. But statins have serious side-effects and high cholesterol is not a contributing factor in 75% of heart attacks. So why am I prescribed statins? Side effects include liver failure, onset of type 2 diabetes, possibly dementia?

Ok doctor, the patient survived a heart attack but died of organ failure.

That would look great on my tombstone.

As a longtime reformed ex smoker I can't agree!

The proximity of cigarette smoke disgusts me , the prenatal effects caused by mothers' smoking , the damage long term to heart & lungs are well documented and cannot be ignored ( except by the willfully self delusional !) Statistical evidence certainly but by no means "Casual"

Mind you its confession time, I have an axe to grind and a personal interest----------I have a 4 frame exhibit at Scottish Philatelic Congress next weekend " A Counterblaste to Tobacco" !

I hope your exhibit does well.

I should have used the preview button on my post. I meant 'causal' not 'casual'.
