This is an unusual one in that it wasn't mentioned, as far as I can see, in the Postmark Bulletin. The reason for that is probably because by the time it would have been announced it was taken out of use because the London Olympic Games Organising Committee had not given their permission for its use. (Royal Mail are apparently not offiicial sponsors, just licensees on an ad hoc basis.)

South East Anglia use of 'Royal Mail / Olympic / Stamps / Now on sale' ink-jet slogan

Image

Same slogan in use at London South Mail Centre, Birmingham MC, Manchester MC, Plymouth and Cornwall, and Gatwick MC. My dates are all 1 & 2 August. The stamps were issued 27 July and the slogan is believed to have started everywhere it was used in July.

Image

If anybody has other examples, please add new locations here and I will advise the Society of Olympic Collectors which is trying to compile a full list. Extensions of dates for those shown or mentioned is also important. Thanks.

Allan, is there a physical collection of postmarks somewhere, associated with the database?

If so, I will donate the Mold, Tuam, Five Ways, etc., posted on Sunday, March 18.

There is no physical collection of the postmarks that are associated with the database - but many thanks for the offer :)

Still playing catch up (again) ... and as always will reply to comments / questions as I get to them

I think the slogan says "ON SALE 17 JULY" (the issue date for the Harry Potter set).

This is NE/SR TYNESIDE (i.e. Newcastle and Sunderland post code areas), the same as your next postmark.

I think that it should be MALTBY ROTHERHAM...

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
Maltby is a town and civil parish of 17,247 inhabitants in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England, situated in a rural area about 6 miles east of Rotherham and 10 miles north-east of Sheffield. It lies on the A631 between Hellaby and Tickhill at the junction with the A634 from Blyth, close to Junction 1 of the M18 motorway.

Interesting juxtaposition of the elements of the postmark. The Royal Mail part is one part while the place name is another element. In this case their proximity means that the 'l' is missing from 'Mail'. Good find.

This one appears to have a slogan related to Hospices which may have been the corporate chosen charity that year, but until I find another I won't be able to confirm that.

A few that I can not read fully to be able to add the details to the database - but these have been saved for later checking.

Everything else is now in place ....

Here are some more, mostly sourced by relatives and friends who I have pestered to look through their old correspondence!

I have checked the database as some look familiar. The slogan postmarks which are repeats are from different places or expand the first known or last known uses of that particular slogan/town combination.

Three from Aldershot to start with:

Aldershot / - Hants -
30 November 1981. "Remember to use the Post Code!"
7 January 1982. "Remember to use the Post Code!"

Aldershot / - Hants -

Some military postmarks.

Army Post Office
15 August 1946. 7 continuous wavy lines

Image
As can be seen, sent from Hamburg (by my father)

Army Post Office 3
2 July 1915. Unframed continuous roller - there are very faint traces of wavy lines.

Image
Sent from northern France (by my grandfather). It also has the censor mark:

Passed by Censor / No. 970.

The second one with an OHMS Recorded Delivery etiquette.

I used to live in Bradford. The skyline doesn't look like that any more, but as the saying goes "I remember Bradford before they knocked it down." The skyline didn't look like that in 1974 either. But the slogan is worth it for the awful pun.

Postmarks from Darlington which have a time, a dash or neither over the date.

Darlington / Co. Durham
20 October 1970. "Darlington Town of the North"
20 October 1971. "Darlington Town of the North" This has lines inside the circle and a time instead of a dash over the date, unlike the 1970 postmark.

Image
Image
With the shading, probably meant to be read as "Darlington In Town of the North".

Darlington / - Co. Durham -
4 August 1980. 7 wavy lines. Dash over date

Image

Darlington / - Co. Durham -
19 August 1980. 7 wavy lines. Time over date.

Image

Darlington / - Co. Durham -
2 September 1980. 7 wavy lines. No time over date, no dash over date.

House of Lords Clerk of the Parliament 1st Class cachet in black. This suprisingly uses the Tudor Crown, which was supposedly replaced by the bowed arch St Edward's Crown in 1953. The House of Commons Speaker 1st Class cachet used the St Edward's Crown, see the posting immediately before this one. Maybe nobody noticed :?:

Image

Leeds MLO / - B -

At some time between March 1980 and December 1981 "M.L.O." has become "MLO" without stops.

The Leeds M.L.O. BA1 postmark retains the stops in "M.L.O." which the Leeds MLO B postmark had lost. BA1 also has the time over the date instead of either a dash or nothing.

The triple-line "M" for "Mailsort" was introduced in 1987.
