Hello can someone help please :).This is a scan of Great Britain stamps that come from a family collection. The time has come to sort it.

The Stanley Gibbons number (local library catalogue 2011) for each row plus how many of each, is given below.

The questions are;

What is the condition of these stamps?

How many have fugitive ink like SG 238 or are they faded?

Some are dirty or have corners missing, creases etc are they worth keeping?

Are the cancels worth more than the stamp?

ROW 1
SG 210, SG 207A, SG 57 x 4, SG 238 x 2

ROW 2, 3, 4
SG 83

Image

ROW 5
SG83 x 2, SG83 6d, SG 285, SG 83 perfin, SG 325, SG 327

ROW 6
SG 421 x 4, SG 376 x 3, SG 324

ROW 7
SG 415, SG 421 x2, SG 422, SG 426, SG 475

If you can help it would appreciated :) :) :) regards Jon

You write, 'Some are dirty or have corners missing, creases etc are they worth keeping?'
I know what you mean, but looking at the age of them, I wouldn't throw any of them away - or if you are throw them in my direction. My periods to collect. The only ones I throw away are badly damaged GB decimal.

The next to last stamp on the first row is faded, the rest is not bad at all.

First, second and last stamps on the first row are the most interesting, and there are also some nice cancels, Kirkcaldy on two of the penny reds KVII, and nice SOTN's for Edinburgh and Stoke-on-Trent.

All in all, not a bad little selection. Somewhere between $5 and $10 on a good day.

Nothing of great value as already indicated. Postmark collectors might pay you more than stamp collectors, if they want the cancellations for their collection.

Make sure you are identifying the stamps correctly - in the lower rows, the stamps with solid shading around the king's head are not the same SG no as those with lined shading.

You have posted an image containing 56 stamps in an area many of us would have posted no more than 1 - 3. Might I suggest if you have more to post, Please break them down and ensure the images are less crowded.

A few minutes searching will provide you with examples of the perfect way to post images. That way you can get a much better estimate of worth. :D

Only one stamp stands out from the page and that is the 5d Victoria .It is nice and above average condition. ( about 6/10)

The 10d Victoria is collectable but with a heavy cancel ( usually used on parcels) and some stain or fading from the cancel in the white areas. the condition is about average ( 4/10)

the two Edward 3d purple on yellow paper are evidently different printings and also average codition ( 5-6/10)

The two Edward 4d are poor concition ( faded or heavy parcel cancel 2/10)

The rest of the stamps are all fairly common .One or two among them with full perfs and decent cancel are worth keeping , but personally I would not entertain the rest with blunt corners or heavy part cancels.

I can see no merit either in any of the five 1d red on paper keeping the paper scraps attached. The postmarks are not complete or full readable .

That isn't SG327 at the end of row 5. That is a Die2 Downey Head with a decent POOLE CDS. I am also pretty sure that the stamp next to it is a Die2 ½d. Downey Head, therefore not SG325.

Some of the smaller thimbles, the squared circle on the KEVII, the GLASGOW on the KEVII 4d, those are the ones that would draw a bit of attention.

Have fun on your quest,

Skilo54

The cancel looks like it is from Aden (paquebot?). Could you show a larger scan please?

1st larger scan with 5d and 10d together, the 10d is probably SG 210a and the 1st of the 3d purple on yellow is from the slightly scarcer orange yellow chalk paper run but neither in excellent condition

Thanks for the replies :) :) :) :) . Haven't had time to research the information. thought some scans might be of interest. Taking the practice makes perfect approach, so these where scanned at 1200dpi to see any difference.

The postmark is definitely an Aden Paquebot postmark. Currently eBay seller Varisell has a cover and a postcard from Aden with this postmark:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200015974171
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200488370970

I would still keep it despite the poor condition of the stamp - maybe the postmark is uncommon, judging from the prices on eBay.
