This is another instance where a postal marking is not a cancellation.

Although modern inkjet postmarks may be found on the back of envelopes, this type on the back is from the automatic OCR process (Collect British Postmarks section 27)

As I must have said somewhere, I knew very little about postmarks / cancellations / postal markings so am putting everything I can find up for use on the database. And finding a lot more out about them so that I now know a little rather than very little... :D

Not having a copy of Collect British Postmarks to reference, I presume that OCR = Optical Character Recognition or something similar.

Is the LS = Leeds as I surmised - that's where the envelope was both posted to and from - or is the LS a chance combination or does it mean something else?

I'm pretty sure LS will mean the area of posting, though not the delivery area. The arrows are for alignment and have no meaning.

Thanks for the information. Something else I have learned about British postmarks, which turn out to be a lot more interesting than Leaders of the World stamps. :!:

That's of course more interesting for me. Chacun à son goût.

The other 'missing' element is probably a number.

Posted by my father in the box on the York-London train on 16 April 1968. He did not pay the extra fee for posting the card directly into the box on the train, so the card also got the following:

16 April 1968. A hand stamped rectangular To Pay cachet.

This is one of the Welsh private railway stamps with a private cancellation. It is on a card with "Forward to York Station to be posted on arrival" in manuscript.

It therefore also has a York postmark over a 3d Welsh regional definitive which has been cancelled previously with the Talyllyn Railway postmark.

Lots of stuff from Wakefield in West Yorkshire.

Wakefield Yorkshire / A
5 November 1971. "Remember to use the Post Code!"

Image

Wakefield Yorkshire / A.
24 February 1972. "Remember to use the Post Code!"
This differs from the 1971 postmark as the "A" is narrower and has a stop after it. The 1971 postmark has a dash over the date, the 1972 postmark has the time over the date.

Image

Wakefield Yorkshire / - A -
2 April 1973. 7 wavy lines.

Image
Just to confuse us all  this one has the time over the date, but no stop after the "A". AND internal lines inside the circle.

Wakefield Yorkshire / A
1974 23 December. 7 wavy lines

Image
And this one has a dash and no stop after the very faint "A", but no internal lines. It also has the year over the day and month. :!: :!:

Wakefield West Yorkshire / A
12 January 1977. 7 wavy lines

Image
After the local government reorganisation of 1974, so that Wakefield was now in West Yorkshire instead of the West Riding of Yorkshire. No stop after "A", time over date. Year in the 'right place'. No internal lines - no room for them anyway.

At the time, 1st class mail had a time in the postmark, 2nd class had no time (--).
At Christmas (ie week or two before) the time tended to be dropped for all mail, to save stopping the machines to change it.

Wakefield Yorkshire / C
The font in the town mark is significantly larger. There is NO stop after "C".

Snaffled from a website which had several FDCs with this postmark for sale. I would have had one but couldn't find enough to meet the minimum order for these cheap covers.

Ampleforth College / Yorks 21 NO 79 double ring with arcs, 'B' handstamp. Continued through to at least 1983, still using its own registered label.

That's it for this lot - except for about a dozen postmarks from York which will follow later.

York
14 November 1973. "York Living History"

Image
With a view of one of the city's bars and part of the city wall which still survives almost complete. Bars = Gates. Gates = Roads. Mickle = Big. Micklegate Bar is the Gate at the end of Mickle Road. York's Danish heritage.

Pub = Bar. York's modern day heritage of the famous Micklegate Pub Run. Much more interestingly for some, the York postmark is on a letter posted in what was then Western Samoa but is now just Samoa. How many days ago is a problem because of the movement of the International Date Line.

And to finish this batch, a cover with multiple marks.

Image

Image

Sent in a Mexborough Grammar School envelope in March 1976 to Harlington. Harlington is a small village about 2 kilometres north of Mexborough.

But the letter seems to have been posted in Sheffield. There is a postmark:

Sheffield. 12 May 1976. "Remember to use the Post Code!"

Image

If only they had thought to "Remember to use the Post Code!". Somebody thought it might be the Harlington near Bletchley in Bedfordshire. But it wasn't and has been sent on from Bedford:

Bedford 18 March 1976 "Remember to use the Post Code!"

Image

If not Harlington in Bedfordshire, it might well be the Harlington which is part of Hayes and Harlington in Middlesex (now in the London Borough of Hillingdon).

But it was not:

"No Such Street/Place in ... ... ... ... ... ..." with "Hayes / Middlesex" inserted. Hand stamped cachet in violet

Image

So it has been sent back with a boxed two line cachet hand stamped in violet:

"Undelivered For Reason Stated / Return to Sender"

Image

It is now postmarked from Southall in Middlesex:

Southall / - Middlesex - 20 March 1976 with 7 wavy lines:

Image
Bottom post mark here but there is also an offset:

Image

It has gone round back to Southall, so somebody new has written "P.T.O." in blue pencil on the front and circle the Mexborough Grammar School badge on the back.

It has the been resent from Southall on 22 March 1976:

Image
Top postmark now.

When it got back home to Mexborough, it has been opened. According to the lady I got this from, the contents were then put in a new envelope and sent properly addressed.

I sure hope this is the sort of thing you are looking for and I haven't just nuked your thread! I am sure we could convince the mods to hit the big red delete button if need be.

Anyways, Good Luck with your Database tallanent! :)

Sure is the sort of thing I am looking for .... thanks again

The one shown with the uncertain name I have filed for later ... once I get a possitive ID on the place / office - I will add it in

All the extras with Manchester at the base are now in place ...

OPENSHAW I think. Google does come up with that name.

Wish they'd make their minds up whether it's "Postcode" or "Post Code".

I've only just noticed this comment. Originally it was "Postal Code"

That's one of the originals which was not resurrected for the 50th anniversary. Others were borrowed by Norwich from BPMA:

I agree with Openshaw and the really silly thing is that the name was already listed in the database - which is what the darn thing was created for ...

Everything else to this point is now listed as well as a lot of information from a collection that I had access to for only a short period - hence the delay with the posts on here.

I hope that the updates and additional information make up for the delay and will continue adding more details in a day or so - as I need to give my fingers a rest

Many thanks to all who have posted

The following has just been listed in the database ...

Image

Why is this important .... simply as it takes the total of illustrated items to over 60 percent :D :D

Without all the help that has been offered by members here - getting to this stage would have taken much longer - so once again I would like to say Thanks to everyone who has posted on this thread as well as to those who have sent items direct by email.

I still have many 100's of scans to work through which will expand details or add in new places / variations and this will be ongoing as I seem to be getting scans in faster than I can check and update the details -- but at least the project will not become static ..

An idea that has been suggested ...

Actually there are two suggestions - and I would like to hear what users here think ..

First -- the ability to search only machine roller postmarks or machine rollers with slogans.

Would this be useful?

If so this should be fairly simple to put in place.

Second -- the ability to log in and allow members to create a list of items they have in their collections. It was also suggested that this have the ability to add a user note to the selection.

I have no idea how I would put this in place -- but am willing to look into the problem if enough people wanted it

Look forward to any comments on these points or any other suggestions ...

I have recieved some emails regarding this point and the general view was that the machine rollers with wavey or straight bars were just as easy to seach as any other postmark.

The problems, (it was suggested), would be encountered where it was known that the section to be searched for was part of a slogan - and in these cases all the other search results would make finding a match more time consuming.

With these points taken in, I have added another seach box at the bottom of the main page where the results are limited to only the slogan machines.

I hope this aids anyone who is seaching for these types of items

Hello Allan - further to your email this morning (thanks!), I thought I would test the water here!

I visited Trenchard Lines, the Army camp at Upavon, Wilts, on 29 February and the postmistress had in her box not only the current mark but the previous mark when it was an RAF station. The mark is (hopefully) below. It was in use until 6 September 1993 when the base was transferred from the RAF to the Army. It has therefore not been used since, but she assembled it with the date I was there, 29 FE 12, so don't think that is evidence of contemporary use!

This mark has been added with the details to show that this was stamped to favour at the date.

They may have done this on other occasions - so having the details there at least lets people know the in / out of real use periods ...

From what she said, I think it's unlikely it has been assembled since the day it transferred! I had to phone in advance to make arrangements to visit because obviously there are security checks so I had to be an expected visitor. She has been postmistress for about 18 years and she was very dubious whether the thing would even fit the wooden handle!

This was posted to my parents, erroneously without a stamp, two days before Christmas in 1981 (when I was 5!).
However, the '1981' plug was inserted upside-down so it appears to have been posted in 1861.
