I have one of these Gandhi covers somewhere...found it in a pile...thought it was nice (regardless of legitimacy at the level y'all are discussing)...but I can't find it. I'd like to get thousands for it. Meanwhile, here's another Indian FDC from almost back then. "Pant". Is it genuine?

Notice the first cover cachet spells "Ghandhi" and the second "Gandhi". Is this normal? Two spellings? Also, the stamps have one spelling and the cover another on exhibit A.

Here in the States, we're used to looking a fake vital records!

Ya. Genuine. The other FDCs from this period are not worth forging. The cost benefit ratio would be very low for someone who tries to forge these.

Its Gandhi that sells and that is the area for forgers to invest in

Agree - I think that is abundantly obvious to all on this board except the member who de-railed another thread with this nonsense above.

Have split it off to keep that thread on topic.

Thanks for splitting this off from the Gandhi thread! So what does "near worthless" mean in this context. I like to recover the listing fees. What party was Pant?

Wikipedia is your friend. Here's the start of a lengthy article on Mr. Pant:

"Har Govind Vallabh Pant was a freedom fighter and founder of the "Kumoun Parishad" political group in 1915. He was elected deputy speaker of the United Provinces legislature on 4 January 1951..."

He is just another personality stamp of India. Personality stamps are too many in India and they are of very less interest to collectors worldwide.

With three stamps and being postally used it may go for a maximum of 1-1.5 USD.

Never more than that even in crazybay.

Botany Bay was established as a penal colony...was society ever so harsh as to have a 'special place' to ship off people with mental problems to? Crazy Bay would be a bit too obvious a name though, wouldn't it.

Although...growing up in "cottage country" in Ontario, there was a place called "Go Home Bay". :P

Yes, society was ever so harsh. The Atlantic Slave Trade was rather harsh and, so the story goes, Africans sold off less desirable members of their people. How about the Soviet gulag system? We can go on and on with this stuff. Let's not. I read an article years ago that it's kind of prestigious to be descended from those early "criminals and misfits" who were sentenced to "transportation".

There's a Buzzards Bay in Mass., not too far from Martha's Vineyard.
