As I have posted elsewhere, I inherited a stamp collection from my grandfather and I came across this item among the loose stamps. Is this a cinderella stamp? I am not familiar with them at all, and would like to know more. What could you tell me about this one? Thanks guys!

Running my interpretation of the German words shown, the translation is roughly: German nat(ional) association for Austria. Through the keel ore must.

The last sentence is a bit baffling. The subject matter and swastika lead me to believe it relates to making Austria part of greater Germany sometime before WW2.

Interesting, never seen it before. My hunch is 1920s era due to font and style?

And the google translation in Wolfgang's link is;

"Event mark from the time of Austria-Hungary. These were issued at a specific occasion such as a donation, dedication, or political propaganda. Many of these brands have been published by various associations of the Germans abroad propagated. An overview of the traded Austria event marks is in our archives."

Style is certainly Art deco but with the little swastikas
in the frame, I'd have imagined it to be mid 1930s possibly leading to propaganda for the Anschluss Germany -Austria.

The " pirate " ship harks back in style to the Vikings ----Wagner and the heroic Siegfried Saga operas great favourite with the Nazi era ?

Those Swastikas are reversed compared to the Nazi use of the emblem.

The Swastika was an ancient symbol with various meanings and uses waaaaaaaaay before the Nazi Period, and I suspect its use here is coincidental.

Like Glen, I'd date this to 1920s / immediate post-WW1 based on "look and feel".

"Deutschnationaler Verein für Österreich" means " German-national Society for Austria" .. The "Deutschnationaler" were people who identified themselves as Germans living outside Germany... There were Deutschnationale groups all around the borders of what used to be Austrohungarian Empire.

The thing that is specific about Austria, is that since Dolfuss these groups have been fought, because Dolfuss started a new policy of pushing Austrian national identity over the German one (seeing the danger from Nazi Germany)... So these labels must have been printed prior to Dolfuss, meaning prior to 1933.

The Swastika shown in these labels does not look like the Nazi Swastika. It is the other way around...

I can't understand the second part of the Label.

Edit: Gavin beat me ahead to it :)... His point about the swastika is a very strong point and I also agree that this label is from the 20'

The swastika is a motif from Tibetan-Mongolian Buddhism; its a symbol of peace. So could have been adopted by this org. as relating by a stretch to their ambitions of, apparently, pan-Germanic nationalism, which such movements generally advocate will bring peace & propserity.

Why the use of a clearly Viking ship though? Wagner's Ring cycle seems the obvious allusion.

Could it have been produced by either of these organizations?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Nat ... ssociation

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_L ... Germany%29

Or do you suppose both would be too early?

Nope. As stated before, the group that created these labels is called " Deutschnationale Verein für Österreich" ( German-national Society for Austria".. I have no clue regarding this society... You need to do some extra research :)

Here are swastikas used on some definitely non-nazi...

They also appeared on GB Government savings stamps of the same period...

The Deutsche Nationale Verein fur Osterreich is a forerunner of the National Socialist Party in Austria beginning at the turn of the century. From a different Wiki:

"Austrian National Socialism was a Pan-German movement that was formed at the beginning of the 20th century. The movement took a concrete form on November 15, 1903 when the German Worker's Party (DAP) was established in Austria with its secretariat stationed in the town of Aussig. It was suppressed under the rule of Engelbert Dollfuss (1932-34), with its political organization, the DNSAP ("German National Socialist Workers' Party") banned in early 1933, but revived and made part of the German Nazi Party after the German annexation of Austria in 1938."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austrian_N ... _Socialism for more info.

As for the saying; this appears to be taken from a drama in five acts written by Karl Schoenherr and published in Vienna in 1902 called: Sonnwendtrag. Sorry, I'm not up on Austrian literature to be able to provide deeper insight into this reference. But in the play, the speakers are sitting at a bar having their beers and conversation, and a part of the toast made in response is this expression "durch muss des Kieles erz."

Again, someone more versed in old Austrian literature (pardon the pun :D ) may correct me, but my best translation of this expression would be something like, "a keel of Iron is needed to get through." Since a ship is depicted, makes sense. But there must be some deeper allegorical meaning that slips me (again, sorry for the multiple puns  )

Very interesting Cinderella.

Thanks for all of the incredible information so far. I'll do a bit of research from what you have helped me with so far.

On a side note, I found another one of these mixed in with some more of the loose stamps, so now I have two of these, exactly alike.

I still have been unable to find much else on this piece. Has anyone else been able to?

I take it there are no "guides" for things like this as there are for stamps, correct?

Wow! I love this cinderella. Sorry that I can't shed any light on it.

The design and artwork are great. It appears to be some sort of woodblock. How many perforated octagonal stamps are there from this era? It may have been produced by some sort of art studio. It must be listed somewhere.

Here is a scan of both of them together. The second one I found has a slight crease, but other than that it is also in pretty great condition...

The creased one seems to have the rare "broken H in OSTERREICH" flaw
