There are available several general catalogs - e.g. Scott, SG, Michel, Yvert, ... and of course large number of more specialized. I have seen for example Venezuela specialized. And I pretty sure that for the larger states there are specialized catalogs, so you may choose one covering your preferred state.

Thanks Ikanek. I own a full set of Scotts which is ok for a quick identification but I'd like to dig further into South America and add to my slowly growing collection. My main interest now is Argentina as I purchased a nice local revenue collection from a fellow SB member. I am also looking for a Central America catalog as I have quite a few old family covers from there.

But revenue stamps are not included in Scott. For them, you need to get revenue stamp catalog. Try to contact Barefoot or here Mike (ID: Not Bruce) and they hopefully will have some.

Stanley Gibbons does a Central America catalogue, which I use beside my SCOTT Classic for the early issues.

Here is an Argentine stamp dealer, selected at random, because his website can be translated into English (button at upper right):

http://www.jalilstamps.com/index.php

He should know all about specialized catalogs for South America, and one page of his website offers the "Specialized Argentina GJ Catalogue" of 504 pages, which sounds pretty comprehensive.

I know nothing about his reputation or pricing.

Hi stallzer

Besides Scott, the Stanley Gibbons Part 15 (Central America) and Part 20 (South America) could be invaluable. Also I have found Yvert & Tellier more useful then Michel.

If you can ever find a copy of the old Minkus Latin America, Volume 1, Part III buy it. It contains both Central and South American countries. Mine is 1980.

Most Latin American countries have their own specialized catalogs. Check the collector's clubs in the countries to find out what is available.

In my area (Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela)

Colombia
Alvaro Barriga catalog (1980's)
Leo Temprano 1984
The new catalogs do not have any detail.

There are a number of specialized air mail catalogs

Ecuador
Cataldi
Bertossi ( just found out about this one)
Banco Central in Quito, Ecuador for the small book about the first issues.

Venezuela
Aurelio Blanco Catalogo Especializado de Estampillas
ASOFILCA (http://www.asofilca.com/) for articles on classic Venezuelan stamps.

The specialized catalogs are usually in Spanish so I hope you can at least read Spanish. To make your life more difficult Y & T is in French.

For a friend I created a list of the catalogs available for each Latin country. I have to see if I still have it. If you are an APS member contact the APRL and they may be able to tell what catalogs are available for each country. They are really helpful people.

There are many catalogues available for some of the South American countries.

A search for Argentina catalogues on within the Catalogues sub-section onDelcampe returns 92 results, with many duplicates of course.
http://www.delcampe.net/category.php?language=E&cat=4203&var=Timbres-Materiel-Livres-Logiciels-Catalogues-de-Cotation

You could inquire from the sellers about the contents of the ones you think may be of interest and you could also Google the titles and see what comes out. Expect everything to be in Spanish (or Portuguese for Brazil). As a general catalogue I would recommend Michel, they list much more than Scott, but that's in German.

Thanks all. I tried Michel for my German collection but I struggle mightily with German. I can handle Spanish as I took it for 6 years in School.

Thanks for all the replies.

Hi stallzer

I wish I had 6 years of Spanish. I would then know what my wife (Colombian) is yelling at me :D

You should do fine with Yvert & Tellier with your Spanish. I speak French and have few problems reading Spanish. A person who speaks both Spanish and French once told me:

"Take the French word and if it pertains to a male stick an 'o at the end otherwise an 'a'. It almost works .
