Hi there.

Here is a very unusual printing error/flaw of a British Bechuanaland 1891-1904 2d green-grey and carmine. Has anyone seen something like this where the entire "A" is basically just the 3 dots on each corner?

I would appreciate all feedback.

Thank you.

A large scan of just the small group of letters would allow us to see if it has just been "scraped off/rubbed off" from mailing or under inked or if the letter was actually broken.

There IS a break in one of the letters of the cancellation "o?" as well as a lighter-colored patch where the "A" would have been, so there's at least some indication of physical damage.

Here is a larger scan of that specific area.

I might be wrong, but I don't see any form of "scrapping/rubbing" of letter 'A'.
There is a small white patch which I can't figure out.
The postmark dated 'DE 19 92' is clear and over the area where the 'A' should have been.

Have a look.

Most probably a small piece of foreign matter on the paper before it was overprinted and cancelled after it was removed,

At 1st. glance I thought it may have been a forged overprint but the blurred letters B B as base confirms it as a genuine overprint,

Good point David. Foreign matter does seem a logical assumption. The upstroke of the "L" also seems to be thinner in the middle, so whatever was there may have been large enough to affect the "L" as well. I would suspect that the light spot is a thin in the paper, perhaps from the foreign matter actually being in the paper itself, and not just on the plate or on the surface of the paper. It may have become dislodged once the pressure from the overprint was applied to the pane of paper.
