We thought we might start off a new thread.

Connected to the Grumpy Old Mens Club - hereafter known as the GOMC.

This group meets in Mindbogglers Shop in Croydon, generally Monday and Friday Afternoons. Sometimes 2-3, sometimes up to 6 members in attendance,

Members to date are:

Ron --- MrBoggler.
Harry --- Dr Agony.
Bill --- Waroff.
Lawrence --- The Lecher.
Ted --- The Butcher.
Gerry --- the Evil Leprechaun
Bruce --- Gold Finger.
Andra -- the Learner.
Phil --- the Walrus.
Dave --- Sherro.

We usually just sit about, chatting about the recent Auctions, new Buys, what we are going to buy, show and tells - in fact anything at all to do with stamps, and a fair bit with nothing to do with stamps at all.

But the knowledge within this group is quite wide, and its a shame to see it not being put to good use.

Most of the members do not have access to a computer so this is the main reason for starting this thread.

Also from time to time there will be little bits of gossip on anything interesting or exciting in the stamp world.

Some Stamp Club News, Auction News, Stamp Fair Goss. We hope to make it an interesting spot to stop by and post a few questions, drop some news, anything at all.

So see you at the GOMC soon.

Just a quick question Ron, will you be in the shop on Wednesday.

I'm on my way down to Melbourne tomorrow morning and might have some free time wednesday afternoon. Thought I might be able to catch up with you.

Ron,

Your reply just prompted a trivial question in my mind.

In France and Belgium, schools has just broken up for the "summer holidays". So for you guys, do you call them "winter holidays"?

It may not be relevant, but I was wondering what "Geelong for Premiers" meant.

I asked an Aussie guy I work beside and he said that it showed that stamp collectors are strange!

I may not be getting an honest answer!

Yes Alister.
its winter here so I guess we call them Winter Hols.
But I think most people refer to them as Term Holidays,
1st Term
2nd Term
3rd Term Etc.

Very Little is irelevant with the GOMC.

Geelong for Premiers. means Norms Football Team,Geelong.which is based outside of Melbourne, won last years Aussie Rules Football.and ended up Premiers,

He hopes they will do it again, :?
thats why he rants GEELONG FOR PREMIERS,

Thanks for the Geelong football update. I believe my workmate is from Brisbane which would explain the slanderous stamp collecting comment!
Recently my GB collection has turned more toward a QV collection, and I am trying to put together a Victorian thematic GB album. I thought it would be good to include QV 1penny (or 1cent/anna etc) stamps from the Empire countries. I've noticed that some stamps have Stamp Duty inscribed on them, were they used postally and for tax purposes? Are the different shades/colours from different years? Why do stamp catalogues keep referring to QV stamps as chestnut coloured when none of the pictures look anything like chestnut coloured? And last but not least why does the middle top stamp have my name postmarked on it?

If someone else can answer the qestions re stamps please go for it,until I get to the shop, and check the catalogues I will be just guessing,

However as to the name of Donald.
that came into being during the Gold Rush days.when a Young Scot was taking the grime off himself,in a creek one day,
He had left his Kilt on the creek bank when a large Roo hopped down for a drink, and was startled by the man in the water.and took off in great haste.catching the Kilt with his tail.and dissapeared into the bush.never to be seen again,
Our Young Scot took himself into the camp nearby,to look for some more clothing, and as he did, there were cries of Donald wheres yer Trousers, :?: and it was then that the camp became know as Donald.

Unusual name that, 'very close to Croydon station'. Is that Mr. Croydon station? Or is it Mr. station?

sounds of a rebellion are coming from the ranks of the GOMC,this week,
When I started to inform them that the GOMC meeting for Friday the 11 th of July was going to be cancelled as I would be Attending Prestige Auction starting at 3.00.pm.

It seems Garry has brought his Auction forward to the Friday so as not to Clash With Mowbrays Auction on the Saturday. :?
Big Deal :!: But I shall still only be going to the one.

anyone else going to have a problem with a Friday Auction. :?:

This Particular one will be the Last day of the School Holidays,
and so far we have being going "gang busters" in the shop.as we are only 3 doors away from the Cinemas,so I hope my "staff" will cope with my skiving off on a Friday Afternoon.

Friday at 3pm is a very strange time for an auction, in my opinion. I might have gone, but certainly won't be able to now.

"SKIVING OFF"??????

That brings back memories. Have not heard that expression since my RAF days more years ago than I care to remember.
Correction - I DO care to remember, as I must admit I enjoyed my 40 years in the RAF?RAAF.

Had a visit from Apptec today,he struggled all the way to my little shop from New South Wales with his foot in a cast,

it seems he had been having a blue with PayPal.

he found a few bits,n bobs, and has booked a return visit later in the year,

Waroff hit the shop on Monday ,,right after the Auction, and seems very pleased with the GV lot he got,(Yes :!: That was the lot he was bidding me up on).

so far the School Holidays here in Melbourne have been a BOOM for the Cinema, and there have been queues of people outside to most sessions,, this also means the shop can get a bit busy from time to time,
so what with attending to customers sorting out the end of Year bills, etc, trying to go through what was bought on Saturday,I have not gotten around to a number of things I had hoped to,
So to "Scotsman abroard" I have not forgotten your question just keep running out of time.

Ron.

Question 1 - Are you in tomorrow afternoon?

Question 2 - Have you got any KGV Commonwealth left from the auction after Bill's raid?

Q 1. am I in what tomorrow,?
if you mean the shop yes, most of the time
exc 12.30- 1.30. I could be out to lunch.
But this week and next are not really great times for you sherro, the car park is full from 10.00am till 3.00.pm,the folks at the Cinema,so parking is very hard.

Q 2. I am sorry to say young Willie took the lot from the Auction,
thats KGV Australian,?you mean.I do have some other GV from OZ and other areas I think still left.but it is getting thin on the ground .

Ron, I'll be there tomorrow after lunch. I'll just put my car into drive and reverse until I knock one of the housewives cars out of the way

Thanks Glen

I rang the Number and they tracked it down,Don,t know why,, but it went to the Mooroolbark, (Nothing like Croydon)

They rang through to Mooroolbark and were told it would be delivered to the Croydon PO within the Hour.

So just wandered down, with the Number and the story.

Fortunatly the Headmisteress was not on today. so had no trouble picking up me parcel ,

It was marked Carded 23/6. :!: so no idea where it has been :?:

So my problem now is......... wait for it............

I have now started a collection of STAMPBOARDS.COM logos,
you have provided at least 7 diff in this Pack not inc the Hat.

I will show them when Jason's in and we can get some Pics up.

However as to the name of Donald.
that came into being during the Gold Rush days.when a Young Scot was taking the grime off himself,in a creek one day,
He had left his Kilt on the creek bank when a large Roo hopped down for a drink, and was startled by the man in the water.and took off in great haste.catching the Kilt with his tail.and dissapeared into the bush.never to be seen again,
Our Young Scot took himself into the camp nearby,to look for some more clothing, and as he did, there were cries of Donald wheres yer Trousers, :?: and it was then that the camp became know as Donald.

now to the second part of Donalds question.re Stamp Duty on Victoria Stamps.

I quote "The Post Office Act 1883 47 Vict No 781 Came into force on Jan 1st 1884 and Authorised the use of Fiscal Stamps for BOTH postage and Revenue .All values from 1/2d to 100 Pounds were able to be used as Postage as well as Duty stamps,

The use After 30th June 1901 for Postal use of all stamps inscribed "Stamp Duty" was Illegal.

As to the Colour of the 1d Stamp. The Comprehensive Colour Cat Of Aust Stamps.list it as
T84, Brown/rose.
Brown to Yellow.
Red.
and Olive. but no Chestnut.( so as we say in OZ ,,,Not that old Chestnut Again)

Ron.

I'd like to ask the GOMC why someone would have put these stamps on an envelope in 1958.

Was he sending stolen stamps home to himself before the cops searched him

Any comments from the GOMC would be appreciated
