I collect bullseye cancels and would like to see others you may have.

This is Scott #160 or SG #311. I like the cds without the outer ring. Carlton, Victoria Oct. 26 1898.

WOW! Those are beautiful stamps. Bullseye or SON can't get much better than that. Not to mention they are on Roos.

Thanks Glen,

That too a bit of measuring the stamp on the envelope and praying that it will get a nice SOTN cancel....and it paid off.

If you like SOTN cancels, then you should take up Jhalawar. Evidently the instructions to the post office were to well and truly deface their stamps. Here is a whole row of them on Jhalawar SG 2:

That is an excellent postmark! I wish the UK post office would do that - 70-80% of letters in the UK these days get no postmark at all!

Here's a squared-circle on-the-nose from back when they used to care!

ScotsmanAbroad,

Almost 95% of our mail gets those wavy lines because
by putting our stamps almost flush on the right top margin of the envelope,
the date part of the cancellation hits the envelope
and the wavy lines cover the stamp.

I found that if I put the left hand edge of the stamp
about 3.5 inches from the right hand edge of the envelope,
there is a very good chance I will be able to get a SOTN cancellation
- I do this once in a while to entertain myself
(almost like Mr. Bean sending birthday cards to himself...hehehe).

Cheers
Andrew

This one is close, but I especially like it because the date, March 4, 1865 is the day of President Abraham Lincolns' 2nd
Inauguration as President of the United States of America.

Wavy lines? The chance would be a fine thing! The last time I went home, I had about 120 letters waiting for me. The only ones with any clear form of postmark came from Ebay sellers outside of the UK. Not one from the UK had a decent postmark. NOT ONE! 4 or 5 had pen scribbles, 80% had nothing at all, the rest had this new postmark circle which is so big you could put a block of 4 definitives in the centre and it would miss them all! There are letters complaining about it in Stamp Magazine almost every month.

This "star"-cancel is so well placed, that it might be difficult to determine which stamp the card is franked with:

What Arlene shows is an incredibly common cancel on an incredibly common stamp.

A 10c item to most dealers.

However a better strike and placement would be impossible to better.

However it is one of the nicest things on this thread. :)

And with an October 1901 cancel is an Australian Commonwealth useage.

This is the FEDERAL period, and this was a Commonwealth Of Australia stamp, not a Tasmania stamp as such - it could legally be used in ANY state at this point.

As is generally known, Australia became a 'Commonwealth' on January 1, 1901 - the month Queen Victoria died. For postal arrangements, the amalgamation of the six different state Post and Telegraph services was required. This occurred on March 1, 1901.

While I do not actually collect these, they do turn up in "stuff". If I started, I would not know where to stop. The ones below are probably among the best of the ones I have, but I included the two rather odd cancellations at the bottom of the scan just for fun.

I do like the Castlemaine and Prahran ones. The clean black on the green is quite attractive.

Yeah, Thank you Gavin for encouragement,

Here is the little fact about Kampar town (my sister is working there in a private university now). For those British/Australian Army or Soldier that service for Malaya before, they should know those place very well.

Kampar is a town in the state of Perak, Malaysia. Founded in 1887, the town lies within the Kinta Valley, an area rich with tin reserves. It was a tin mining town which boomed during the heights of the tin mining industry. There were many tin mines on the outskirts of Kampar during the heights, but most have closed down following the collapse of the industry.

The name Kampar was derived from the Cantonese words kam pou, which means 'precious gold'. This refers to the town's previously large tin reserves.

Another more plausible theory is that Kampar is named after the Kampar river (north of the current township). The river itself got its name from immigrants from the Kampar regency in Riau Province, s in Sumatra, who used the river to navigate upstream. This predates the large-scale mining of tin in Kampar, so it is likely that the Cantonese words "kam pou" were derived from the word Kampar, rather than the other way around. Curiously, Kampar in Sumatra was where the 1st Sultan of Perak (Sultan Mudzaffar Shah) was based before becoming Sultan in Perak (his highness was a son of the last Sultan of Malacca)

That is the information that I copied from WikiPedia

Kenny,

Nice bit of history. You know what, a map might make this even more interesting. The problem is most of these maps are copyrighted.

Cheers
