Revenuecollector,

That new post is another stunner. The posts that you have made for my eye are some of the most spectacular cancels that I have seen. I dont have any understanding of the topic but you dont have to to enjoy your area of collecting. Keep putting up that magnificent eye candy.

Tim

Thanks Tim, I appreciate the kind words. :)

It's funny: I often get a fair amount of flak for not being a "serious philatelist" or historian; outside of working on a revenue set by Scott numbers, I pretty much collect for aesthetics, what is pleasing to my eye. I don't consider myself an expert by any stretch, probably closer to an "art collector" than a philatelist.

But I know what I like, and it's served me well thus far. ;)

What I find intriguing is that while U.S. regular postal issues from the same era have their "fancy cancels" (usually designs carved into cork) and some nice handstamp cancels, the majority are found smudged or partially stamped on regular issues... and you rarely find precancels or typeset cancels. Also, you don't have as wide a variety of sharp clearly-defined handstamped and preprinted cancel designs that you find on fiscal usage of the era... it's an exciting area unto itself that is still underappreciated, in my opinion.

Revenuecollector,

Collecting what you like is the way to go and Philatally is definately an eye appeal hobby I think. Its always nice to get involved in an area thats undervalued. I dont collect to make money but its nice if you are on a winner not a looser as they will have to be sold at some stage. Even if its not me that does it.

Do you get to many stamp shows in the States? If you spot any Australian covers over there and you happen to buy a few I will always take them off your hands.

Thanks,

Tim

Kenny,

That is a nice clear crisp cancellation, which contrasts very nicely with the colours on those stamps - some of my favourite stamps as well.

Cheers

Klang, Selangor Postmark. It is the place where Uncle Andrew is living now and it is near to Klang railway station.

Port Swettenham, Selangor Postmark. According to Uncle Andrew, it is located 5-8km away from Klang Post Office. The Port Klang (Pelabuhan Klang) is no more using Port Swettenham postmark rather than Port Klang Postmark.

Kenny,

The Klang Post Office is near the Commuter Station (about 100 to 200 yards (roughly). The Port Klang Post Office is less than 1/2 a kilometre from the sea.

Good morning Boarders,

This 5d Macquarie is a bit tatty and battle scarred but I do like the cancel. Forgot to add - the cancel is Midland Junction, Western Australia

Just sorted these out.

Two of them I find of interest. The first being the threehalpenny brown. The postmark is Bruce rock, WA. Looked up location on google earth, and judging by its location, the population would have been miniscule in 1922.

The second stamp of interest is the green threehalpenny. Where is the place on the postmark? I can make out Tasmania, but for the life of me cannot decipher the town name.

It truly looks like "Tudnville"

I'm sure you stampboarders can come up with an answer.

That was simply stunning.
Thanks for sharing that fantastic scan.
You are inspiring me to get more serious about collecting SOTN stamps.
However, with the limited budget,
I will probably have to concentrate on modern Malaysian stamps.

David,

You obviously have worked hard to put together such a stunning collection of stamps and cancels. This sort of material I think is just stunning. So nice to look at a page like that.

Dporter-stamps absolutely brilliant, I love those older issues, better than 10 colour butterfly from nowhere etc, desert sand and others, BUT mine are not to be compared with some of yours, I might have to dump some and upgrade

Wow. I buy many 100s of surface printed GB QV each year and to get ONE liike the the top rows is a miracle .... much less dozens of them. 8)

Are things like the '616' postal cancels? Never seen that type before.

WOW! These are hardly a la DPorter but i doubt many have any in that league! I checked my GB Queen Victoria and felt embarressed!!! On a grounded more budgettable level...
I rounded up this bunch i particularly like the early Spanish stamp which looks fab! :)

Glen,

The 1551 & 616 (or possibly 919, not sure) are telegraph cancels so not postal but can be found on a lot of the early QV stamps including the high values.

Listed this gem up for sale today at $75:

http://stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=8509

UGANDA 1898 5R Q.Vic Top Value, VFU BULLSEYE 'Entebbe' cds.
WHAT an eye-popper. TOP value of the set .. a £1 value essentially.

Clean and fresh. With superb socked on nose "Bullseye" cds of "Entebbe - MY 7 - 1902". Shallow thinned corner perf, but a gem looker.

This series is notoriously for diabolical centering.

Aaah, something lovely passes through your hands as a dealer now and again, that is a pleasant change from the boring daily flood of modern PO FDCs, year books and packs and Pacifics etc!

This 1913 9d Roo has a lovely full face "skeleton" strike of:

"M.O & S. B. - JL 28 13 - St Kilda Ry Stn"

Now this is not a common stamp at all, even average used, as there frankly was no real postal need for it. Fresh postally used with these two sheet margins is a rare delight

Being from the interpanneau gutter/imprint corner of the sheet, it would be just my luck the 1st watermark issues HAD no printer imprint of course!

If this was from just 2 stamps along, and had a MONOGRAM on the margin it is $3000+ in the ACSC.

Sigh. Anyway, a lovely item to pop into stock. Have no idea if that cancel is scarce or not -- oddly the superb Premier listing does not include MOSB cancels for some reason.

http://www.premierpostal.com/cgi-bin/ws ... C&country=

And for keen train/railway collectors, a lovely piece as well.

Another absolute ripper cancel I found when sorting some Roos today.

This one a 9d 3rd watermark.

Magic full face: "DONNYBROOK - 11 DEC 22 - WESTERN AUSTRALIA"

Donnybrook, population 1616 today, is a one-street rural town today in country WA. Back then, population was well under 1000 I'd bet.

For non Aussies the word "Donnybrook" is used to describe an unruly fist fight outside a pub etc, so no idea why the town got the name!

With the Microsoft cashback on eBay at 30% a week or so ago, I decided to look around on eBay for some material to fill holes in my collection. I had made an offer on the piece below that had been declined; I felt that it was priced a bit high at $475 (SCV = $400). With the MSN cashback though, it brought the net down to $335, which to me was doable, as (1) this has a lovely socked-on-the-nose cancel which dovetails with my cancel collecting focus, and (2) the inverts are not commonly found on piece.

Even though the centering isn't the best in the world, the stamp is otherwise sound (these are frequently faulty), and the presentation is quite nice, so I'm very pleased with it.

As a bonus, in the intervening week between when I bought it and the stamp arrived, the new 2009 Scott Specialized came out. Very little movement in 1st-3rd Series revenues, with the exception of some of the part perfs, silk papers, and the $20, $25, and $50 2nd Series denominations... oh, and the two 2c inverts of the 3rd Series. R135b made a HUGE jump from $400 to $750, and this R151a made a nice jump from $400 to $500. :D

Hi Tooler,

The middle stamp postmarked 1 March 1901 represents an important date in Australian philately in that it's the day all the colonial Post and Telegraph Departments amalgamated.

Thus on that date the new Federal Postmaster General's Department was born.

I find this period particularly interesting.

Cheers,
Reddog.

Reddog .. well spotted .. the date is a little murky, as I wrote recently:

-------------

As is generally known, Australia became a 'Commonwealth' on January 1, 1901 - the month Queen Victoria died. For postal arrangements, the amalgamation of the six different state Post and Telegraph services was required. This occurred on March 1, 1901. That date can be regarded as the date after which any stamps issued, were done so by the Australian Commonwealth Postmaster-General's Department.

However, the Post and Telegraph Act 1901 was not enacted into law until November 1, 1901. Interestingly enough Colonial stamps were never demonetised, and most continued to be valid for use (in any State) after 1901 - indeed were fully legal on any mail until 1968. Many collectors and dealers used them for normal mail to other collectors as low values were very inexpensive.

For near a century 'Australian' stamp issues have been regarded as those commencing with the Kangaroo and Map series in 1913. This new ACSC catalogue (correctly) broadly defines them as any stamps issued since 1901.

I wonder: would one of the Bhutan phonograph record stamps with a nice CDS dead in the centre be classified as 'socked on the noise'?

Hi!

I just thought I might show this one! Although it`s no very rare postmark and of course no rare stamp, I think there`ll be at least one person hear on stampboards, that would probably be interested in it! I´d guess it will be quite difficult to find such a nice and pretty well centered footscray cancel!

So Mister Footscray (Waroff49), just send me your adress and it`ll be yours!

Greetings from Germany

Hi all Reddog here. :D

I totally agree Waroff. One sees some real killer cancels on that stamp, the Melbourne one can be particularly hideous.

Cheers, Mark.
