Following on from this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10191

Anyone going?

I'm thinking of going, but will have to wait till nearer the day before I can make a firm decision. If there are enough Stampboarders going, I thought it might be nice to get together at some point.

I know a couple who are going, I'm sure there will be a few more.

Cheers
Chris

Hope to get down - will confirm nearer the time - still working on train fares and hotel rates at the moment...

...it'll be good to have another Stampboards International after last year's bash:

My husband just looked over my shoulder at this picture and asked who these people were and if they were Aussies. He then pointed out that Glen had a glass of dark beer, and said you can't get dark beer in Australia. I rapidly cast my eyes down the page and took great glee in pointing to where it said 'A bar in London, 15 February 2008'. Trust him to notice the beer.

I think your husband needs to visit Australia and see the dark beers that are sold in the pubs on a daily basis.

Tooheys have been brewing this grand old black ale since 1869 and as such they have had time to perfect this robust beer. They started bottling the dark ale in 1970. Many believe this to be a dark ale in the style of British brewing, while Tooheys disagrees describing OLD as more like the German "Alt" beers. I like to think of Tooheys Old as a great Australian dark ale. Like so many dark ales brewed in Australia, Tooheys OLD doesn't make the mistake of overpowering the palate with roasted malty flavour.

Do they issue a special issue at these shows? Souvenir sheets or something?

I read where they issue sheets of "Smilies" or something like that.

They told me it was something called Gitness. That wimpy Gavin on the left, was drinking some pale watery local stuff called TinAnts as I recall.

Gitness are Welsh or Scottish or something, and they stole the world famous Cooper Stout recipe it appears.

Nothing is sacred over there.

Objection :!:

That was Marston's Pedigree. A fine Strong English ale.

Perish the thought that ANYONE would confuse me for a lager drinker !!!

I shall be at Stampex for the Royal Mail dealer briefing on the Thursday 12 Feb.

The Charles Darwin set, MS, PSB etc are being issued on the Thursday - see
http://www.norphil.co.uk/2009/02a-charl ... in_200.htm

Edited: I got the Stampex dates wrong! The 'Celebrating Wales' miniature sheet is issued on Stampex Thursday which is Thursday 26th.

I love the Miniature Sheet. I've always like maps. Are they going to do something special at the show for releasing the stamps? Special Postmarks? Imperf? Something like that? The Miniature Sheet would be a great imperf item.

There is an uncut press sheet of 12 or 21 MS, but they are perforated as normal within the sheet. Imperfs is one of the unnecessary gimmicks that Royal Mail doesn't go in for - and don't give them any more daft ideas :x

Watch our webpage for the special handstamps available for the date of issue. There will be a Stampex specific one, but there will be no special ceremony like the yanks do.

Ceremonials are rare, but they did do something for the Army Uniforms at Autumn 2007 www.norphil.co.uk/articles/armyfdcstampex.htm

Someone forget to tell the gentleman in the middle where the camera was.

I don't think I'll be making the show but maybe I will see if someone can pick me up a mini sheet with a hand stamp. At least there isn't a special toll free number you have to call to order the sheet.

Bit of a "Bump" for this one...

If anyone has any ideas for a get-together, it's only 3-and-a-half weeks away...

I know a few pubs fairly centrally (Strand area) that might be a good place to meet up

I believe that the All Bar One where we met for drinks last year is now a restaurant only, so probably best to give that one a miss.

Gavin

thanks for directing me here. I fully intend to be there (presuming I am still employed at that time  ). I am due to be in London on business from the 25th thru the 27th and naturally have extended my trip by a day to make it to Stampex on Saturday the 28th.

I should be able to make it to a get-together on Friday evening if such is being planned in a reasonably Central location - I will be taking the tube from St. Paul's station, so anywhere within 20 minutes train ride, ideally....

Regards,
Vinod

Vinod,

It'll be great to see you there 8)

I'm thinking somewhere around the Strand/Trafalgar Square area; there are a few reasonable pubs round there where you can also get something to eat.

If anyone has any preferred locations, please post up in the next few days

Now that the 2009 pages have been created, the Dathlu Cymru page can now be seen at http://www.norphil.co.uk/2009/02c-celebrating_wales.htm
Royal Mail's briefing for dealers is on the Thursday, so if anybody is around I shall be there then.

OK, accommodation booked. If anyone wants details of a chain of 4-star hotels (Paddington/Hyde Park and Kensington areas) that will do B&B for about 50-60 quid a night, send me a board email.

Now, about that get-together. There's a decent pub called the Ship and Shovell just behind Charing Cross station (actually under the arches) that would be a good meeting place. I'll post up the address so you can find it on a map nearer the time if that's a suitable location for everyone. The other question is Thursday night, or Friday night (or both?).

Have a think about it and we'll firm up the details nearer the time

Anyone interested, please join the Conga Line here...

At this point I am cautiously optimistic that I will still be employed at month-end.. not bad, eh??
So yes, indeed - I think I should be able to find my way to the Ship and Shovel at Charing Cross - will await the posting of the address

Just a heads up to remember your camera. We will need PICTURES ............and no bringing Stampboards into disrepute again (like the infamous near-eviction from the Groucho Club!!)

Vinod, I was thinking of meeting at around 6:30 -7:00pm on the Friday - that would give people time to finish work and/or visiting the fairs and have time to relax for an hour or two beforehand.

Margo, Sorry you won't be there this time. I'll make sure the camera battery's charged and ready! I've got a vested interest in NOT getting kicked out of there as it's one of my favourite pubs in London at the moment

Please have one on us!

Hi Gavin,

As I am in London next week, I may try to be present, but still can not promise as my diary is quite full

It will be a pleasure to meet some Stampboards members. :D

:?: Question: When can I arrive at latest ? You preview to stay late ? I ask because I may have a meeting around 6.30pm and come only when this one is over ?

Thank for the invitation.

Best regards, Seb Delcampe from Belgium

Seb,

I do hope you can make it.

We should be there until fairly late - it's a good pub that serves good beer (I know you Belgians appreciate your beer!!!), so why move on if we don't have to

I'm about 99% sure of being able to attend. All I need is somewhere to stay. Can anyone suggest somewhere reasonably priced within staggering distance of the pub?

Cheers
Chris

Chris,

I'm staying at the Shaftesbury Premier Hyde Park, on Westbourne Terrace. About 3 minutes' stagger from Paddington.

Address: Shaftesbury Premier London Hyde Park. 78-82 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington, W2 6QA, London.

4-Star "boutique" hotel. Clean, tidy, good breakfast but small(ish) rooms.

Currently showing at £52 for Friday night (but you need to add 15% VAT to that...).

I stayed there last year and so did Glen and Margo.

The same group have several properties in that area.

Check the link below:

If you decide to go for it and we miss the last tube, it's only half the fare in a cab if there're two of us

I have the address with me, I hope that I can make it.
I am staying in the Hilton hotel in Islington close to Stampex and St. Pancras,
Both places where I have to be on Saturday.

Faust,

I hope you can meet up with us on Friday 8)

It will be good to meet another Stampboards Member :!:

It sounds as though you have got a good hotel there. Are you travelling on Eurostar :?:

Perhaps one day I'll be able to make it over there again (last time was in 1975 - guess it's changed a bit since then  )
