I'm hoping some smart techo can help

I'm having problems with my computer during start-up
A window pops up which says:
-------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft. NET Framework
An unhandled exception has occured in a component in your
application. Click continue and application will ignore this error and
attempt to continue

Object reference not set to an instance of an object

details (button) Continue (button)
--------------------------------------------------------

I click on continue, but it just keeps popping back !! I've been clicking for 10 mins !
Make it go away  please :?

Also when you click on it another little pop up occurs underneath...

---------------------------------------------------------
Document Viewer
Please wait while Windows configures Document viewer

----------------------------------------------------------

This one has a loading bar thing that fills up (as you click continue in the .NET pop up above) but never reaches the end :!: :?: And the cancel button doesn't work.

I can continue with other programs by dragging the .NET pop up box to the side and ignoring it

Any ideas how to make it go away completely :?: :?: :(

Thanks in advance
Skippy

I have windows XP
Not sure what version of Internet Explorer (how do I find that?) it would be an old one, the computer is around 4 years old.

The pop up occurs right after the desktop opens, before I've connected to Internet or email or anything.

Download the free IE7 update is my advice (but do not TOUCH IE8 a few techies have advised me!)

http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9AE91EBE-3385-447C-8A30-081805B2F90B&displaylang=en

See if that changes anything?

Thanks for that Glen, but I don't think it has anything to do with IE because it occurs long before I try to connect to the internet.

I ended up going into Task Manager and turning off all the applications that didn't look right ( fingers crossed  ) The Pop-up has gone, and it's stopped trying to load some sort of Document Viewer.

But when I restarted the computer it began all over again.

At least I can turn it off with Task manager, but what a rigmarole !

For future reference : To open Windows Task Manager, right-click an empty space on the taskbar, and then click Task Manager. (took me ages to troll through the help pages to find that !)

One thing that may have stuffed things up was I downloaded a Registry cleaner (RegCure) last week to try and speed up the computer. I think it's deleted something important :(

Adding IE7 stopped a few similar issues I had.

If you have not updated for 4 years you will not have it.

It is free and quick ;)

One thing my son taught me about computer problems, especially error messages is that somebody else has always had them.

If you copy the text from the error message into Google (you may have to write it down as it's often impossible to highlight and copy such messages) and paste that into Google, you will get many instances - often in forums - of other people having the same message and some answers.

Most people use google for 1-3 word searches, but a whole sentence, such as "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" works just as well.

My computer is very, very slow so I was going to do what you did. However I first googled about slow computers and was amazed at how many reports there were of cleaning programs which had caused problems for people.

Each program tested had found some things which slowed the computer down but none found them all. Quite a few did sufficient work that you were half way there and then had to pay 'large' money to get the 'large' version to complete the job.

I just steered clear and am putting up with a slow computer. It is a pain but better slow and safe than sorry.

Glen,

Couple of weeks or so ago IE8 loaded on to my computer courtesy of Microsoft's automatic updating installer. Enter quite a number of minor-ish but very annoying, frustrating glitches. I know sod all about IT and because I'd loaded a new camera program at about the same time thought that must have been the problem. Read your post, above, uninstalled IE8, reverting back to IE7, and hey presto, all those new gremlins have disappeared.

Thanks for the tip.

Skippy,

Assuming you are not on a server and are running Windows XP, you need to load Service Pack 3 (SP3). This has a hotfix that should stop those issues.

As far as IE8 is concerned - stay clear of it :!:

I also can't stand IE7, so I'm sticking to IE6 8)

Thanks everybody

I finally figured out I have IE version 6 (that info is hidden in the Help menu "About Internet Explorer" !)

And I think I've solved the problem for now. Regcure has a backup button where you can undo and restore everything it deleted up to a certain date.

Quote:

Kevin that's exactly what I did
Downloaded the free version which found over 200 'problems', then I paid to get the so called Fixer.
So bloody stupid of me
The result was it deleted something for the printer - thats why my computer was searching for the Document viewer
It deleted spell check, so I couldn't send an email without the computer asking for the CD to install spell check again
It deleted my favourite grafics program
It deleted Microsoft Works Task launcher, so I can't use publisher, scheduler, spreadsheet and all those other things associated with that.......

Just a few things really... yes the computer was faster because nothing worked ! So I guess their advertising is true

Hopefully they are all back now after restoring the backup.
But I'm too scared to turn the computer off now in case it doesn't come back on

I really hope when I paid for the Regcure upgrade that I'm not on a monthly billing plan or something!

Stupid stupid stupid ! :(

I nominate myself for the dumbest stampboarder of the month (or year ! :( )
Do I get a prize :D
Got to be a positive side here somewhere

Thanks Norvic
Just wanted to add that I did this not long after reading your post and spent a good long while reading forums where people had the exact same error message.
Previous searches of "Document Viewer" hadn't been much help. Searching the whole sentence seems so obvious now
Anyway thankyou for the tip, it helped a lot

Cheers
Skippy

If your computer is slow, it could be due to a large number of temporary files.
I suggest you use CCleaner which is free and quite easy to use.
It will remove temporary files and a lot of other rubbish.
It is pretty well 'idiot proof' but as with any programme like that, you need to be careful.
Do a restore point beforehand if you are uncertain.

Be careful using registry cleaners unless you know what you are doing.
Some may remove boot-up files and then you are in trouble.
They are best left alone and often don't speed up your computer very much.

As for IE.
If you have IE6, I would suggest you upgrade to IE7 and that may well solve some of your problems.
As for IE8, I have been using it for sometime with no problems but you need to have a modern computer otherwise you may find it will slow things down.
IE8 is actually very good.

You don't need to get a cleaner to delete Temporary Files, just do this on your computer:-

Go into Tools
Click Internet Options
In Browsing History click Settings
Click View Files
Left hand top corner click Edit
Click Select All
Click Delete Selected Items

Clean computer!

A slow computer could be down to it needing a defrag try downloading Diskeeper, it's free to try for 30 days.
Or try reinstalling Windows remembering to back up important files.!!!
Agree with Glen's comment about IE8 it's made my internet very slow,
Don't forget Windows Help Files (press F1)

Brummie,

Unfortunately that just deletes temporary internet files and not temporary files created by programs. And before anyone goes away looking for the temp files in their C: drives, just remember that some of these files will be currently in use by running programs. Deleting one of these can corrupt a program or the Windows OS itself - and you know what that means :!:
