Yes.

There were five of them.

Lombard Street (LS), Borough (B), Charing Cross (CH, CX or C!), Old Cavendish Street (O.C.S), and Vere Street(VS).

I have a Vere Street cancel somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it up.
It's a tiny street just off Oxford Street, now largely occupied by Debenhams.

Hi, just to prove that eBay can be useful for something, as thats where these came from;
Im happy to show everyone some of my Maltese Crosses... Starting with a very nice clear red to a getting overinked red to a worlds worst ever seen red cancel - yes its still an MX! And also a nice black on black.

I just wish they had never been soaked off the covers! They are a lovely bright red and would have looked fabulous

Im still deciding whether to keep these or pay some bills.
Image

TTFN - Greg

PS Im one of the lucky ones - I have a full set of 1 Black, 2 Blues and 1 Red personal initialled stamps. Im aiming to gather the perforatted ones as well. Actually what I should really try and do is also match them with the same plate numbers - Ill have to check if I can? Unfortunately their not as good as these ones - it takes years just to find 1 with you own initials.

PPS - I NEVER SCAN MY STAMPS ANY MORE... I dont trust the high intensity light coming out of the scanner, so I only take decent digital photos and lock the stamps back up in a very dark, dry, cool environment.

Ive already seen older stamps starting to break apart just from the paper fibres organically breaking down. Look after your little masterpieces. Actually thats another idea for discussion or is it being covered? What will you do when you find out that the 160 yr old organic based gum is tearing your stamp apart? We may have no choice but to change from MUH or MH to MNG!

Hi there... Newbie here.

Thought I would share my MX's... not as nicely striked as most here but I am still proud of them. Only have 4... 2 penny black 4 margins, a penny blue no margin :( ...and a beautiful ivory head I picked up for a song within a lot. Like the other post, I guess the owner never looked at the back. Sadly it has a hinge remnant on the FRONT of the stamp which I am hesitant to try to remove for fear of damaging the MX or the head... any suggestions? Anyway love the MX pics... I am looking for a full strike bright red to add to my collection.

cheers

Hey Gordo,
and welcome!

You might not have a "super" MX cancel yet but I must say you have one the best Ivory Heads Ive ever seen!
Others may correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you'd have any trouble getting the old hinge off the front as I don't think these stamps ran their ink or cancels - So you should be able to just soak in clean room temp water for a couple of minutes and remove the hinge.

Or first just try using a damp cotton bud - (A Q tip?) the thing you stick in your ear! And dampen just the hinge bit to remove it.

Wait for a couple of more confirmed OK's first.
TTFN

Q-tip dipped in very hot water is the go.

Soaking will not hurt the cancel or the red ink in any way, but may well lessen that superb Ivorty Head effect.

Thanks for the tip... I'll give it a try. I could almost not believe my eyes when I saw this stamp... (ebay of all places.) Funny but I am more proud of it than all my other stamps including pb's and embossed.

I have a couple of others but none as nice as this... just hope that I am not forced to sell my collection to pay rent... lost my job almost a year ago... the stamps keep me sane lol...

thanks again and keep posting those great pics...

I found the Vere Street cross.
Letter mailed from London to Paris, dated February 1st, 1841.
An Anglais.Calais transit, two manuscript 10's and a PD (paid destination) and, strangely, a P-F (Paid to Frontier) cancel.

Just wondering if the double MX makes it worth more or less value-wise?

In my opinion, yes, worth more.
But that is not necessarily the view of other collectors.

I've seen it before. Somewhere around the 1940 100 year anniversary?
It's to big to have been an original 1840 MX.

Its my 999 post!

To honour the occaision I thought I'd post up a few of the MX's I won in a lot recently.
Love my MX!

Didnt realise that there is a London Number 9 in there either!

One of my current pet projects is to reconstruct a full - but unplated - sheet with all 240 lettering postions all with MX cancels. I guess that 95% will be easy and 5% will be the death of me!

Just had another look...
The stamps PJ, CF, JB, and GH are all heavily blued with Ivory Heads. :D
As blue as the header bars on these pages!

(Top Center, Middle Left, Middle Center and the London 6 on the Bottom).

The others are all lightly blued.

I thought I should put up the rear scans of the above stamps (sorry Brummie - pictures are far better than words aren't they!)

These stamps give you a good idea of "Blued" and "Ivory Head" variations!

Image

But also looking through the rest of the bunch I found these. One of them is the most stunning Ivory Head I've ever seen - in real life. Middle left stamp

Weirdly enough the Top right is the reverse of what I normally see with these.

Image

ScotsmanAbroad - Ive already got 237 letter different unplated stamps for a sheet - but not all MX cancels. Och Aye!
