Hi,

Maybe someone can shed a light on this interesting event in postal history.
I saw some months ago on eBay cover sent from Germany (BRD) to Soviet Union in 1969. As I remembered I have something like this myself I did take a closer look. It was described as "cover from postal war between Soviet Union and Western Germany" or along those lines. Seems I did not save photo. Here are scans of my cover:

Exactly the same label as on cover auctioned on eBay.

I found this article Der Spiegel 1969 but my german isn't much worth except it seems to speak about boycott or blockade. To the west of article you can see article in pdf format "Post/Briefmarken Blockade".
Perhaps a kind forum member from Germany could give a short summary?

http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-45741759.html

If anyone knows perhaps you can help with these questions. What blockade this was, why was it started and by whom and how long did it last? I have not seen any more of these covers.

Best regards,
Toivo

Beginning in the Fall of 1968 the Soviet Union began returning mail franked
with stamps of the 1965 "New Berlin" series (rightmost stamp on your cover).
But, as it turned out, more mail with these stamps was delivered than was
returned.

The Hannover 3 label on your cover is Type V in the "Postkrieg 1948-1975
Spezialkatalog" by Dedo Burhop.

As the label says, the Soviet Union gave no reason for refusing the mail.
The buildings depicted on the stamps are new construction in WEST Berlin
in the 1960s.

Wow, that was fast - thanks a lot! Cover I saw on eBay was listed at 10$USD and went over 30$USD (I don't know what was closing bid). Is this realistic price or does this catalog give any estimations on value? Compared to Meschynarodny cancellations on covers (International, considered some type of censorship by some researchers) which can be found often in large numbers I've not seen more of these.

My edition of the catalog was published in 1975, so the prices are ancient.
There are later editions.

Covers with the 1.10 DM value are priced at 30 DM plus an extra 1 DM for
the Type V label.

Old topic but since one member here collects such things I'm reviving this. Another item I have, a postcard.
