Interesting.

Never seen that before.

Would be quite valuable I'd say .. 3 figures plus.

There is small wording under PAMABA .. can you make that out?

All I can discover was it does appear to be in SA, and they had a 'Pamaba Gazette' published from December 1911 - January 1912 .. well at least the Uni of SA has copies on file of those months.

Where is our resident board librarian? 8)

Lettering under PAMABA, is extremely indistinct, however looks like PERPANATION! !!!???? (WITH THE EXCLAMATION MARK) :!:

I havent found anything other than what google can throw out.

Thanks. Browny.

It couldn't be "Purple Nation", could it?

My guess (and it is only that!) is that this could be something like a child's toy stamp. The design shows a nodding acquaintance to the Roos and Kookaburras, which I would tentatively date as pre-war.

Another question - is it stamp-size or is it a bit smaller? Reason for asking that is that I've got a few German toy-stamps which have similar cues to the Germania and Hindenburg definitives, but they're always about half to three-quarter stamp-size.

Hope that helps...

measures 32.5mm x 23.5mm edge-edge of purple outline.

Last letters are definitely Nation, although theres only 5 letters prior to that so couldnt be purple.

Thanks anyway....will keep on guessing for another 5 years   :)

Oddly if you google as the stamp seems to be with final apostrophe, i.e. PAMABA' - a lot more matches come up .. often Eastern European.

Above the A there is a symbol that looks like a symbol you sometimes see next to brand names?

Is it a brand name label for good exported from Australia?

I notice it has no value and is very crude.

I did a bit of online searching last night with my off-duty Librarian hat on....will check out some print sources at work today but a couple of possible leads:

There's not much electronically.....
I think Pamaba may have been a brand of soap or soap-related product produced by the Bunyip Soap co

"Pamaba gazette and Australian exchange" is a journal published in SA-held (at) State Library of SA
has an added author entry Pamaba Soap

Wonder if the wording was actually Preparation rather than PERPANATION

There was a very large soap company in Southwark Adelaide in the period,Bunyip Soaps.
Coiuld it have been some sort of cinderella associated with the company??
All of the actual docs are in print in State lib of SA

Records of Crompton Bunyip Soaps Limited comprising share register

MARGO THE LEGEND!

I reckon you may have nailed it.

I had a very close look at the squiggly lines over the TR, and I believe it says "made in"...(Australia)

Still very indistinct "Preparation"...but definitely a better guess than what I thought.

Really appreciate the help, and you've got my vote for a crown over your avatar. C'mon Glen and crew.......where's the crown for best post / answer for the week. :D

Interesting! 8)

A thought - could the stamp have been used to seal the wrapper for each bar of soap???? - i.e an advertising gimick!

Yes that may well be possible.

If anyone has the email of that Cinderella columnist, may be worth passing this on? Seems like a new find?

Great detective work by MargoZ.

MargoZ has hit the nail on the head.

It is a type of advertising label for PAMABA Soap, PAMABA Standing for PA, MA and BA(by) indicating it is good for all the family.

I wrote about the stamp in Cinderella Corner in Stamp News of July and August 2006.

The State Library of South Australia has a couple of issues of the PAMABA Gazette in its collection.

For those who do not have access to "Stamp News" back issues here is what I wrote about the label in July 2006.

The question about a label inscribed PAMABA, has been around for a long time. I raised it as a question in the September 1993 column with a repeat in the November 1993 column, and no answer was forthcoming The question is being asked again by Malcolm Brown from Western Australia.

Out of idle curiosity I went surfing the web to see what came up if I did a search with the word PAMABA, and lo and behold 38 items showed up, mostly in foreign language but two items struck oil. They referred me to SASS, South Australian Sources for History and Social Science a site for the University of South Australia and item Q5038 refers to Pamaba Gazette and Australian Exchange with the dates December 1911 to January 1912.

I did a search of the State Library of South Australia catalogue and found that the library held a copy of the Pamaba Gazette and Australian Exchange in their periodical collection. The magazine was published by Fred. C. Bourne of 10 National Mutual Buildings, Victoria Square, Adelaide and is typical of the Edwardian period with articles and poetry by various writers as well as a sizeable contribution from Our Boys League.

It also carried a number of ads for Pamaba soap and it appears that the word Pamaba was a combination of Pa Ma Ba(by) implying that the soap was good for Pa, Ma and Baby. It was sold by Penn & Way Chemists who coincidentally were at the same address as Bourne.

A limited directory search established that Bourne was at the address from 1911 to 1913 and maybe longer but he was not there in 1906 and gone by 1919.

Google has been sending 100s of robot spider searches into our database at a time this week .. we can see these from the admin platform. Quite scary in some ways!

The interesting thing is, even 6 month old threads like this have now been "spidered' by google.

So if someone in future ever searches for PAMABA on google, they now get a link to this thread - whereas 3 months back they did not.

That will be the strength of this board going forward.

Names, places and words that collectors in future will search for relating to stamps will lead them directly to stampboards. 8)

there is one in an old auction catalogue (but may be the same one as in this thread)

http://www.prestigephilately.com/auction150/xref_cind_150.pdf

Adding to Pres's research

I did a search of the Australian online newspaper archives.

http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

print Ads (no illustrations) for Pamaba soap occur from 1910 (in this year they won the highest Gold award)

ads petering out in 1918. None occurring in 1919.

Adverts only occur in the Argus(Melb) and the Advertiser(Adelaide)

edit: adding pic

Yes thanks for that Skippy, It pretty well pins down the period which is around the years I suspected.

I now own the one illustrated in this thread.

Picked this up at a collectables fair on the weekend.

I'll be giving it to Tony as it will make a nice companion to his PAMABA cinderella. (And he did bring me back some nice presents from London 2010!)

The trouble with 'one of' survivors is that they look pretty lonely on an album page all themselves.

Anyone got a bottle of OohAh ointment?

Well done Martin, and inspired by your find, I have located a print ad for PAMABA soap from the Camperdown Chronicle (Victoria) from 6/9/17 that fits Tony's time line pretty well. :)

PAmaba is good for PA!
PaMAba is good forMA!
PamaBA is good for BABY!

I am interested to hear from pres whether any other copies of this PAMABA stamp have ever turned up?

I'm not aware of any more Pamaba stamps, but I would still not call this a "one only" because as sure as God made little green apples another one will bob up! Nice to think it probably is though.
