You've probably seen many of these stamps (each state has its own set, the only difference being the state crest or sultan's portrait) but you may not have seen the first day cover.

These are stamps that I mailed to my sister in Penang when I was up at Cameron Highlands, Pahang on a school Geographical Society trip.

Hi Stamper,

Those look nice with the black background. Are they wild flowers or something? I know New Zealand has fantastic flora, my cousin lives in Christchurch and has invited me for so many years to go visit but I have been putting it off.....maybe one of these days.

Thanks for sharing your scan of the New Zealand flowers.

Andrew, is it possible to use stamps from different states on the same cover?

If so, are they more collectable and/or valuable than covers for a single state?

Hi Gavin-h,

Actually it does not matter, they are used interchangeably. I have received mail with stamps from 2 different states on the same cover. You can also get stamps, say from Sarawak, on a cover sent from Kelantan. This kind of mix and match (we call it rojak, after a favourite hawker food of mixed fruit spiced with a bit of chilly and other sauces, topped with ground peanut) goes on all the time because distances between the states are not that great. From the north in Perlis to the south in Johore is about 500 miles (if my geography is right - will need Kenny to check this out).

I don't think they are more valuable and have not heard of stamp collectors going for that kind of thing here. At one time (don't know about now but I'll ask the next time I go), the Philatelic Bureau in Kuala Lumpur, sold the stamps of all the states and so you didn't go to the individual states to get them. Perhaps if that is possible, I might try to do a cover with all the 14 states of Malaysia - might become a philatelic curiosity of sorts.

Cheers

Crosscrescent those NZ Garden Flowers in those stamps are all called 'exotics' imported From Europe, America and Africa.
Nice idea of the designer to use a black background I thought.
Yup a visit to Christchurch when a stamp expo is on could be an idea

Stamper, I'll ask my cousin about the stamp shows there. It is a pity, she used to collect stamps but has given it up and her children are also not into stamp collecting.

Warm regards

Thanks for the info, Andrew!

This one is an Austria & Germany "rojak" (I like that word and I'll use it to impress my friends!!!).

It was to celebrate the "First German Guest-States Day" in Vienna in 1938, which was part of the Nazi plan to take over the world...

The "rojak" is a mix of Austrian and German stamps, which were both valid for postage across the "Greater Germany" at the time.

If you manage to make any of your own for Malaysia, do post the scans here for us!!!

That's a great looking cover, Garvin-h. What makes it even more interesting is that the stamps are totally different, unlike the Malaysian definite ones which differ only in the state crests (for those states without a sultan) and portraits of sultans. If I do manage to do one I'll post one to you.

Garvin-h, perhaps a large scan of that cover will do more justice to it, especially the cancellations - have always been a sucker for strong clean sock-on-the-nose (I know you don't quite like to use this term) cancellations.

Cheers

Andrew - your wish is my command - here is the larger version.

They really are great cancels (even though the politics behind it all was unimaginably awful!!!).

The cover was sent registered post to a gentleman staying in a hotel nearby - so clearly a "philatelic" item.

I've no problem with the phrase SOTN (I think that was one of our stroppy Aussie friends  )...

...but I'd love to know the Malay version of that expression so I can impress my friends some more 8)

Those cancels are really mouth watering, there goes my sweaty fingers too. I don't think there is a Malay version of SOTN but if there is one, I'll let you know.

By the way, that rojak thingy is quite a favourite here and some of the ladies wanting to watch their figures, will just have a plate of rojak (pinepple, mango, turnip, cucumber being the main cut fruits, with a sweat and slightly hot sauce and topped with ground peanuts. sometimes some kind of flour cracker can be added and of course the different states might have slightly different versions just like the way the Malay language is pronounced slightly differently in the different states).

Cheers

You've probably seen these before but I just love Australian Native Flowers and I think this is the best Aust. Post has put out (personal opinion of course). The $10 Waratah (telopia) is Beautiful.

Hi Kimberley,

I have to agree with you that these native flowers are gorgeous. I would probably plant all of them in my garden if we could have them grow here. My wife likes flowers and so do I but I tend to do more bonsai cultivation as the garden space is not big and bonsai trees would be just about right. There is a mango tree sitting kind of in the middle of the garden and it bears pretty good mango.

Cheers

Hey Andrew

Another recent set from Aussie on native flowers.
We have the Sturt's Desert Rose on our backyard, it is commonly known around these parts as the native hibiscus. It flourishes extremely well in dry areas.

Peter,

Nice Ginger Flowers,

The one on the bottom right looks like the Ginger Lilies that grow in my garden - really fragrant but the plant that I got from a friend, was actually taken from China. On a trip to the Cameron Highlands in Pahang, Malaysia, I found this variety of Ginger plants actually growing rather happily in clusters there.

Thanks for the scan.
Andrew

Andrew,

Is that a sort of ginger that you could use in cooking, or are they purely ornamental plants?

Gavin-h,

Have both. The one with the white flowers are for smelling and the other one for cooking has red flowers which are not fragrant.

Cheers

Andrew,

Not a bad idea for a thematic collection - "my garden on stamps".

Unfortunately mine is full of weeds :(

I haven't found a topic which is purely devoted to Flowers. If there is I'm sorry, I couldn't find one... Post pictures of any thing with flowers, covers, minisheets, even stand alone stamps. ANYTHING! :P

Right now all I have to show off is this sheet of Nepal Wild Orchids which I picked up from a dealer. The moment I saw it I fell in love with it, I don't know why but it really appealed to me.

Sorry for poor quality it was taken with a digital camera.
