During my sorting of stamps, I noticed a couple of stamps edged in black? (Black borders instead of white) Is it because the person featured on the stamp has died?

Most likely...Yes.
Germany and Belgium spring to mind as 2 countries who did that.

Maybe, maybe not.

If you put up a scan, we will put up an opinion or the facts.

Me,scan? I am an old(er) dog still learning new tricks. It takes me a while before anything sinks in and then it goes.... I was 11 before I could tie my own shoes. lol. I got my first ever laptop in Sept. this year. You could write what I know about computers on the back of a postage stamp and what I know about stamps on the back of 2 postage stamps. Don't worry,I'm putting all the funny looking stamps in a safe place - under my mattress or was it under my pillow. It's somewhere in my room.

ADMIN NOTE

Joey 99% of all new threads here require a photo.

You must own a cellphone or digital camera, and if you do you you can have an image like these below up here in 2 mins - easy tutorial here -

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=284

These photos were just taken with a very cheap digital camera.

There is zero excuse for not adding images to this board - from ANYONE!

If you can type a message here, it is just as easy to add a photo link in that message.

Could you at least tell us what Country they are from? And here is a tutorial on how to load scans:

viewtopic.php?f=29&t=284

I am another old dog, so if I can do it anyone can. Here is one just for this thread as an example of a Mourning Stamp:

There is also this huge thread on Mourning stamps and covers.

If memory serves, wasn't there also an issue from Jugoslavia with black borders as well, back in the 1930s?

Yes. King Alexander Mourning 1934. Here is one of them (I have the whole set, as I do of the Belgium I showed above, but have no decent white background options to scan them on, to make them look neat. Obviously one of the few Philatelic items that should be scanned on a white background.

Since German Mourning stamps were mentioned earlier, here is one from this set to complete the trifecta: Hindenburg also 1934. Must have been a bad year for leaders.

IIRC Greece honoured one of their kings with a black-bordered stamp(s).

Queen Astrid of Belgium was beloved, hence she got a set of 8 mourning stamps. Lots of philatelic covers around with the full set franking them.

There's also the USA's stamp for President Harding which was printed in black for mourning.

There is of course a whole thread here devoted to the societal custom of mourning, focusing on the 'mourning cover', along with these stamps.

Hi, Firstly Admin - I'll upload a photo when I learn how. I joined "photobucket",read the tutorial as mentioned but still can't understand half of it.

I have a camera and sell on auction sites, uploading photos from my computer easy enough - nothing to do with photobucket. Then I see you suggest members join picasa as well?

I'm going to give it another go but if l can't get it to work, I'll just flag it and join another stamp forum.

What country am I from? If you look at the side-bar,you will see that I am from down-under in New Zealand.

Thank you for all your comments re black edged stamps. I thought that they were few & far between but now I know that there is a few out there.

It's given me an idea to may be collect that type of stamp.

I suspect you were responding to me with this bit, as no Admin or anybody else ever asked you what country you were from.

What I asked was What Country are they from? I thought the context would be pretty easy to understand.

i.e., the stamps. What Country are they from?

I can see exactly where you are from and always could. I was simply trying to help to identify what you have, as I have an extensive world wide collection (which should be obvious from the scans I loaded), and can usually help with general queries such as yours.

But in your case I will consider unsubscribing from this thread. I have better things to do.

Yes, most of them are as common as nature formed hot water at Rotarua. Which is why we need to see exactly what you have.

sorry Norm, didn't have my glasses on - sat on them and have to get a new pair. As for the country they are from I aren't to sure as they are now been packed away while I sort thru more stamps. I'll try uploading a photo which will show some of the albums, boxes, envelopes and plastic cases I have to sort thru.

I did it - uploaded a photo and it's "Rotorua" - you can smell before you see it. Said to be the sulphur in the air.

Well done. You are right about Rotarua. I have been there three times, and the lake stinks. It is otherwise a lovely place to visit...

Your Photobucket upload does, however, not stink. Very nice for your first try. Again, well done for mastering this process.

Today I came across the following in a lot that I received. I was quite intrigued by the black outlines and discovered that these are mourning stamps that were issued on the death of Paul von Hindenburg the second president of Germany. I thought this might be a good place to post my stamps. Enjoy!

I've always thought that stamps with black borders are to show that the person in the stamp has passed away.
I do not know whether this is a Universal Postal Union (UPU) thing or whether it is left to the stamp issuing organisation to decide.
Recently (2010) the following stamps were issued in Malaysia and the local philatelists were wondering whether the issuing organisation
was aware of this "custom" or not and whether they had advised the Sultan of Pahang about it.
Some say (this to be verified of course) that the Sultan of Pahang wanted the stamps to have the black border because the state colours of Pahang are black and white.

Image

Interestingly enough today is the installation of His Majesty Yang Di-Pertuan Agong), the 14th King of Malaysia and
the stamps in the miniature sheet, which will be issued tomorrow (today being a holiday) have black borders around his portrait though the borders are obviously gold.

Andrew, I suspect that it was just a now obsolete custom, and mostly used existing items reprinted with the black border (or existing stocks overprinted? - somebody here will know).

A couple of more recent examples - the Churchill issues in the mid 1960's were not black bordered, nor were the Zillions of Diana issues.

Tony,

I suspect the same too - that it is not a custom widely practised.
Nevertheless, Pos Malaysia, sometimes to the frustration of local philatelists, does seem
to do things or allow issues that frustrate us. Guess it is the same elsewhere.
