Hi, I have inherited my father stamp collection. I am confused about what his intention were with this collection and am trying to make the best decision.

I have two empty world stamps books and a collection of world stamps. He did not collect world stamps generally. So I am wondering whether I should fill the two stamp book with the world stamps as it would make a nice collection.

I have no intention of selling the stamps collection. It is just a question of the best way to present them.

Generally my dad collection concise of Australian stamps in proper stamp books.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. cheers

Hi there, nice stamps. While I'm no expert, you can place stamps in albums indexed by:
country & date (alphabetically) or by theme (for instance, all animals together, all space stamps together, flowers, people etc.)

Whichever way you go bear in mind a collection should be catalogued so it's easy to find certain stamps (especially if you intend to add to your collection).

That's just my opinion.
Good Luck

Looks like your father had them nicely set out anyway. I myself, would be inclined to leave them right where they are.

Those old albums would need hinges in any case and really only have room for one example of each stamp. So, you'd have lots of stamps still in those sheets.

You have a great basis for starting a nice collection there. It really is up to you how you want it to look. Have lots of fun.

Hi tyrer3194, any chance of seeing more of your Dad's collection? I really liked what I saw and it has whetted my World Wide Collecting fancy!

hutch

PS. if those old albums are not used, they are probably worth hanging on to. I don't know how much they are worth, but there can't be all that many around! Maybe worth looking into.

Hi Tirer3194, that's a big effort already to sort the stamps and lay them out as you did. Congratulations!

You seem to have used a binder of hagner sheets from what I can see of the photos.

I'm with Hutch on using the albums. You have nice stamps from what I can see, and lots of duplication. Personally I would use stockbooks, and classify them by country and try to find the chronological order. I'm not sure what catalog you have.

It does look as though you have taken to the collection, so I hope you will have lots of fun and become an active member of our community here on Stampboards.

Agree, some nice China material. The Butterflies stamps are an incomplete set, but I see lots of 'broken' sets offered on eBay, or a page of mixed items with a few of this and that, and such lots always sell.

Asia can be tricky to identify, as there's often no English. Japan stamps can be picked as the first character in the name looks like a number 8. In one of the pages I see a couple rows of North Korea (after looking at enough Korean stamps, its easy to pick North from South issues, DPRK stamps have the name inscribed in certain font styles); the stamps showing the elephant logging are Japanese Occupation of Burma. Then there's Taiwan, "Republic of China", ie. the long set of definitives showing the gate.

think that's all of them.
they were in a shoebox in proper stamp envelopes partly sorted. I sorted them and have put them in hangers and a file I got from local PO. I didn't use a catalogue. I wasn't sure what to do with them but know thinking of putting them in a proper stamp book for safe keeping as I have grown fond of them.

Wow tyrer, I'm really quite green with envy here

You have got some very lovely stamps there. And enough duplication to look for watermarks and variations too.

I agree with Glen that you need to get a catalogue for the China stamps. Maybe your library has a copy to look at? You can get disc's on ebay with World catalogues on them and they aren't very expensive either. Eventually, you will need some kind of catalogue (disc or books) to help you sort that amazing lot out.

Good luck and have lots of fun.

You have some great stamps there in your collection. :D

Most look organised pretty well on those black hagner pages... Most (all? :) ) dealers sell hagners, so you could buy a few packs of them and sort your stamps into those.

Agree with the above comments about buying a catalogue to assist in identifying and valuing some of the stamps. :D

Just to whet your appetite for what may lie down the road for you as you advance in your stamp collecting

Some of those South African stamps may not be duplicates - the following come from the Republic of South Africa 1st definitive series which had many different printings from 1961-1974 and included value, paper, perforation, shade and watermark changes

They are worthy of being included in "study groups" such as UK Machin heads, French sower, Australia Roo's etc are - though of little financial value

The 1st Defin stamps that you have are ( in the order that they appear in your scans )-

The 12 ½ c Protea
3c Shrike
2½ c /4c Groot Constantia ( already there's a value change )
5c Baobab
10c Cape Town Castle
7½ c Maize
20c Secretary Bird
2c Gold pouring
4c Merino
1½ c Afrikaner Bull ( the rectangular stamps - the square stamps with the Gnu on are from the final Union of South Africa series )

May I suggest that you put these on a separate Hagner and revisit them much later when your interest may or may not be awakened - just at this stage don't regard them necessarily as "swaps"

Hi tyrer, watermarks are, simply put, a mark on the paper when the paper was made and before printing was done. Sometimes they are not easy to see. If you get out your Dad's Australian stamps and get out the first stamps...the kangaroo's and KGV and turn some of them over you will see a mark in the paper. Most often a crown over the letter A.

Once you have a catalogue you will see all the different watermarks in the listings.

Love the China pages. Green with envy.
Once you have decided what to do then at least you can trim down or build up accordingly.
The suggestion to get a SG Catalogue is a good one in the short term you can possibly borrow a reference book from the library.

Hi Tyrer - lovely looking collection. I'd stick with the Hagners too.

The albums you showed above are beautiful as pieces of nostalgia. I would avoid using them for stamps unless you are absolutely certain that the paper is not yellowing.

I've just demolished two slightly larger albums, one from 1981, and the other from 1990 which were more than half filled. The pages were noticeably yellowing in the older album. The newer album had stamps in it that I needed to complete sets. Neither album could be expanded conveniently

I wound up soaking whole pages to get the stamps off, since picking that many hinges by hand is tricky work. If I had it to do over again, I would have gone with stock sheets and binders from the start. I think you're on the right track with your present display.

I echo this advice, most library's in the capital cities have a recent set of Stanley Gibbons (SG) catalogs. Most will carry a recent set of Stamps of the World (SG), they are a bit heavy to borrow the whole 5 or 6 volumes, so maybe do one alphabetical group at a time!

As for storage, stick with the Hagners or go for some Lighthouse Stock Books. Always available at good dealers shops or through this website in the for sale section from Glen Stephens just to name one (no this isn't a sales pitch). Avoid those nasty cheap ones from the supermarket.

Aside from that, you seem to be doing a great job at getting those stamps organised and much better than just sitting in a shoebox!

Kim,

That is probably a little bit too old for the purpose of working out values and of course it will only cover issues up to around 1966 or so. It will serve as a good historical reference as many older catalogs have information in them that is still valuable or often missed in newer re-prints.

I notice that you are in Mt barker - I would think next time you are in Perth or Albany, try the library there. I know Perth definitely has the SG stamps of the World and the Commonwealth catalogs (as I use them from time to time) but perhaps give Albany a try as well - as that is no doubt a lot closer for you perhaps.

When it comes to China and Hong Kong etc, I would strongly suggest the latest Part 17 China Catalog by SG.

Glen Stephens sells them from here and will post them worldwide.

I was a little skeptical of the China craze, until I bought the catalog and went through a few old pages of stamps and realised that in under a dozen stamps I had over $100 catalog value, then I kept looking and adding up my Hong Kong and Taiwan (Republic of China) and was at about $250 - all these items had been essentially consigned to my Junk Box as I don't collect these areas.

Hope that helps a little.

As there's a new China catalogue out, you'll probably be able to get the previous edition pretty cheaply. The new one has up-to-date prices, but the way China is going, they'll be out of date by the end of the year anyway.

A second hand Wang catalogue is also pretty handy as it has far more pictures, so it is easier to find the awkward stamps. It's all written in chinese, but helps to find which set a stamp belongs to and its year of issue.

tyrer3194 when checking your catalogue, don't get too carried away with the prices, and be careful of the higher valued items. I give two examples here - your Papal States items appear from the scan to be reprints and if so have very little commercial value. (Note though, I have a reprint set myself and it does have a place in my collection)

Similarly, a lot of 1949 to 1952 Chinese stamps were later reprinted specifically for collectors and have little value compared to their genuine cousins. The Gymnastics set blocks of four you scanned is from this era, and may not be genuine. Better close up scans are needed of this set (or just one of the blocks of four) to allow one of our experts in PRC stamps to make a judgement call on these.

I actually don't know which is why I said that one of our Chinese experts would respond.

I know that Gibbons does list the difference in the specialised Chinese catalogue, and I imagine that this information is somewhere on-line (I don't recall a thread here about ti) and I thought that the possibility of the reprints needed to be raised.

Hi Kim and Norm, I've had a look on the net and although I've managed to find someone who sells both types...I can find no other information.

Sounds like we need someone with a specialist book to point out the differences!
