To put this exercise in perspective, just to the end of the war as a generic listing (including officials) you would be looking at approx 1000 catalogue numbers. East Germany approx 3500. West Germany till re unification, approx 1500. Berlin approx 900.

Only a small percentage of these have listed faults. Some stamps have 1 listed error while others have 10 or more.

Ideally I think it would be best to break up the listings into the following:
German empire 1872 - 1919
Weimar Republic 1919 - 1933
Third Reich 1933 -1945
German Democratic Republic 1949 - 1990
West Berlin 1948 - 1990
Federal German Republic 1949 - Present

Within each of these catagories:
(German Empire)
No 1 does not have any errors listed
No 2 has 3 descriptions of errors but indicates 2 I, 2 II then 2 VI. Probably the most common errors. My 2000 cat list I , II & V.
3 goes upto X (lists only 2 with descriptions!)
4 goes upto XXI
5 upto III
6 II
7 IV
9 VIII
10 V
11 I.

As you indicated that only 2 photos per reply were "download friendly" if we only listed the basic numbers we would soon face problems.

If I used the errors in the 2007 Specilised catalogue 1 - 11 has 25 listed errors, 12 - 28 has 40 listed errors. 29, 2 errors, 30, none.

Phew! Thats a complete study in itself!

Mi 31 - 36 has 27 listed errors plus 4 size variations & some large number of colour variations.

Following the listed faults in the 2007 specialised catalogue you would start with:

Michel 2 I 2 II, 2 VI, 3 Ia, 3 II, 3 X, 4 Ia, 4 IV, 4 V, 4 VII, 4 IX, 4 X, 4 XIII, 4 XXI etc.

I think that this would be the way to go. The SG & Scott numbers will not go into these details so are probably best left as just the generic comparision.

ie. Michel 2 I (SG 2 Scott 2)
Michel 2 II
Michel 2 VII
Michel 3 Ia (SG 3 Scott 3)

Just giving support to this as I focus my attention on Germany (proper to 1970) and states (focusing on states). I don't currently collect DDR and Berlin.

I have 2007 Michel 2 vol. Spec. but cant read German, and 2007 Michel in English which unfortunitly excludes the states. I do have 2008 Scott classic which has a bit more that Scott simplified, but still nothing with plate flaws.

I would like Michel to produce there spec. (both catalogs) in English.

But any information in English is a great idea, and I am looking forward to this area being discussed in depth on this forum!

Please read some brief notes here to follow the logic involved in laying this out.

1. The heading of each section will include the Michel catalogue numbers (based on the 2007 Germany Specialised Catalogue in English) followed by Stanley Gibbons general number, then Scott. (Mi 2/2/2) As the other catalogues are not specialised no attempt will be made to match the faults with an appropriate number, only the first of the series. You will see what I mean as you start.

2. Not all faults are listed in the Michel so I am only listing those in the catalogue listed above. When I know there are more variations (ie Mi 4 XXI is listed but the catalogue only describes 8 faults) I will add another which will read Mi 4 Other. This will allow other faults of the same stamp to be added without loosing our sequence.

3. Not all stamps have faults so there will be numbers that do not appear. This is not meant to be an online catalogue of all German stamps, only a reference site for plate faults & errors.

4. I will be creating 3 topics for this. German Empire 1872 - 1919, Weimar Republic 1919 - 1933 & Third Reich 1933 - 1945.

As I don't have large numbers of faults there will be lots of blank entries waiting for a scan. This is where the board community comes in. Please dig out those hidden treasures & add to this knowledge bank. A picture says a thousand words. As my German language skills are very bad one picture could save me a month of labour intensive poor translating!
