I'm new here on this forum and wanted to say hi. I'm from the Netherlands and have been collecting stamps for over 30 years, starting when I was 5 years old with my grandma. But I do have to say I feel like a complete newby, because there is soooo much I don't know. I'm collecting stamps from all over the world with some preference. Hope to learn a lot on this forum.

I like poststamps that where really used or sold to be used. Some countries have a lot of themed poststamps that are never used but are stamped anyway. Is there a name for these? I don't like those. I collected them in the past, but I'm getting ride of them, because I just don't like them. I'm in doubt about what to do with the DDR. Most of the stamps I have of them aren't really used.

Countries I like a lot are Australia, New zealand, Indonesia, most European countries. I also like old stamps and form odd places, but I find them hard to place.

Fingula,

Welcome to Stampboards. The stamps that have been intended more (or only) to be collected rather than used for postage are called wallpaper. They are pretty to watch and nice for decoration, printed in large quantities but unfortunately their only value is in decoration.

Interesting part of wallpaper is to find it postally used. For East Europe that is not usually very difficult but for some other areas that is next to impossible.

Hello, everyone! I've recently gotten back into philately after 30 years, and I am loving it! S

eeing some of these stamps is like getting reacquainted with old friends, like Belgium's King Baudouin or the UK's Machin series.

Currently, I'm way deep trying to figure out which of the US A140 (Scott) stamps (the "2 cents 2" issues from 1908-1922; I have the "3 cents 3" as my avatar) I have in my possession.

My aging eyes are having some difficulty telling which types I have, but, you know what? This is still so much fun playing stamp detective!

Trying to learn more about stamps as I go along.I am from Alberta, Canada.Got involved in stamps because my grandfather was a collector of world stamps dating back to the 1800's.

I use to quite enjoy collecting with him ,as I didn't have the experience he had with stamps I am trying to learn and understand more.I do have a fair amount of stamps And quite enjoy collecting As he is no longer with us i cant turn to him for answers on things.

So any help i get along the way would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Be patient. There can be an adventurous learning curve. We have a thread dedicated to the practice of posting images. Might be a good place to start. Then you can make more informative user-friendly posts.

Best to observe for a while to see how members react to posts.

A Stampboards welcome to Streaker+ in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
We're happy to have you join us. There is a wide range of information on this chat board,
as well as some informal threads to keep you entertained.

I would also recommend that you contact the Calgary Philatelic Society, with centenary
celebrations on the calendar for 2022. It's a club with a fine reputation, and very helpful
for members at all levels of experience. (Of course, physical meetings are suspended
currently because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but online and phone communication are
still active options.) The CPS website is at

For those who don't know this man is the expert on Australian private perfins. I contacted him first to try and obtain a copy of his book, "Handbook of Australian Private Perfins". Unfortunately, it has sold out, but I'm sure he will be a very beneficial addition to the expertise on this Board.

Hi everyone. I am from New Zealand. I got back into the hobby recently after not even thinking about it for 20 years or so when my parents were cleaning out their house and found my childhood stamp collection and returned it to me.

Some of this I inherited from my Grandfather who was a postmaster for a while and had a few mint stamps from important issues as well as first day covers , and some of which I collected and purchased my self with my pocket money.

Since then, I've been slowly building up my collection and filling in some gaps, and am now working on making myself some printable stamp pages to display them in an album.

It's taken me ages to figure out how I want this to look, but have finally settled on something. I've done my first page and am pretty pleased with my effort. Now all I need to do is find a cheapish source for stamp mounts and I'm all set.

Hi everyone. I'm from Ireland and have been collecting philatelic material for many years.
I am mainly interested in Postmarks, Postcards, SOARs,Registration Labels and Railway Stamps.
I was delighted to find this website and see the large amount of information on SOARs especially. I look forward to studying more of what is available on the site.

Hello nathanb in Nelson, New Zealand, welcome to Stampboards.

How good that your parents preserved your stamp collection, and passed it on to you,
so it is once again an active third generation collection. Enjoy your renewed collecting!

New Zealand has had many dedicated philatelists who have produced a great range of
detailed and helpful publications about NZ philately, so your potential needs for information
are likely to be already answered in print in some library. On the modern front, Stampboards
has plenty to offer as well. I like its search function at the top right of each page, and find
that usually picks up posts that are relevant (less often, the one at the foot of the page).

Hi everyone,
I live in California, but collect only European stamps...
I typically buy large lots and collections, keep the stamps I'm looking for, cleanse the rest (I hate faulty stamps...), organize it and sell it on eBay. Not for making money, more for expense attenuation...
I look forward to receiving comments and suggestions.
All the best

Hello RAJESH D NAIR in Calicut, Kerala, India — welcome to Stampboards!

Your collecting areas are a nice range of interesting subjects. Happy hunting for relevant posts
on Stampboards :D

May I ask you which languages you usually speak? I am guessing Malayalam or Kannada, but will
be interested to know your answer.

Recently I have been adding posts about languages of India on the Stamps and Languages thread.
You can find quite a few relevant posts there, including Kannada and Malayalam at

Hello everyone,

I just joined today, after encouragement by Glen to join up properly to Stampboards having bought three nice lots from him over the last few months. The instruction seems to be to introduce myself to you all, to make sure I’m not a bot or a troll, and explain the background and nature of my stamp collection interest.

I have never contributed to a chat board of any kind before. But it will be hard to learn anything by attending any kind of stamp club for the foreseeable future I fear.

Both my wife and I have the usual little collections complied in the 70s and 80s when we were teenagers - mainly Australian and English stamps, with some of those mail order Seven Seas foreign garish colourful ones. (My father in law called such stamps cheese labels!). We both also collected bird stamps.

The resurgence in our interest comes from me being recently given the partly flood-damaged mainly GB collection of my late father, in an old box. By Murphy’s Law it was his Victorian to 1920 stamps that got fully ship-wrecked and those stamps appear to have been considered unsalvageable. Some later things were thankfully in a different place and were spared. He had written up the earlier ones nicely and I clearly remember he proudly owned the obligatory real Penny Black for the front page. The remnants of the now un-readable write up have the spaces where the stamps would have been. He was a government scientist with four kids so he didn’t have any expensive stuff, it was all low denomination, with common varieties. He seems to have been planning to meticulously write up some of the subtle perforation differences in the different watermarks of some common green post-Victorian halfpenny stamps and the handwritten first draft of an article intended for a philatelic club journal about this is in an old (mercifully dry) exercise book.

He was just starting to put his GB collection into a Stanley Gibbons Windsor album, adding black hingeless mounts as needed, in 1978 when the collection got damaged and so he abandoned it all in despair.

Glen has recently sold me a nice substantial starter collection of used GB predecimal and decimal to get me started, which included a replacement for that lost penny black, and some of the kind of Victorian stamps that would have been in his collection. Thank you Glen.

I have rapidly noticed that bird-stamp lovers are inevitably attracted to PNG stamps as well. (Yep, Glen has sold me some nice PNG stamps already too).

So it looks like predecimal GB, some Aussie stuff and PNG will keep us busy during lockdowns. And I’ll need plenty of assistance getting to the level of understanding required to make sense of my father’s old article about those endless green kings that all look the same to my unsophisticated untrained eye.

We are both Philatelic newbies and when home, it is in WA, hence the Cygnet moniker. I’ll look for a nice baby swan picture to match.

John and Emily.
