Hello all, glad to have joined this community. I’m very much into the Court fee and revenue stamps of the Indian States along with the stamp papers. Hoping to share knowledge with like minded collectors.

Greetings to all fans of philately. I collect West Germany and Berlin for about five years. Now I enjoy the "blue fleas" and a lot of printing and manufacturing defects. I'm happy to have found this site, I learned a lot before I registered.

Hi There - I'm Lofty and just joined and was told to go to Roll Call first - hope I'm in the right spot.

I started collecting as a kid in the 1960's then lapsed in the 1980's and have just started getting back into it more seriously now. Trouble is the more I learn, the more I realise I dont know :(

My preference is for Australian Pre-decimals and particularly the Roos and KGV. Bought some catalogues and have done some reading but it is a bit overwhelming to start with.

Anyhow, having fun learning - main fear is that I will accidentally sell a valuable stamp without knowing its value.

Thanks for forum :)

Hello. I'm located in TX, USA. I inherited a small collection of stamps from many different countries. Doing the best I can to find their value. Never realized there were so many stamps that look the same but are quite different with the watermarks and Imperforations. I'm not interested in collecting stamps but can't afford to get them appraised. So I'm just gonna try to do the best I can to identify them and find their worth...so when I sell them, I won't get ripped off.

Hello kelliegirl33 in Crockett, Texas, USA.

Two gentle words of advice, if I may:
• The market value of stamps is, in almost every case, a fraction of the catalogue value (perhaps as low as 20% net, after costs, if you are selling).
• Even if you have not previously been interested in collecting stamps, the best way to get a sense of their value is to spend some time actively collecting, even if you plan eventually to sell what you've inherited. The investment of time will be worthwhile, and getting acquainted with the hobby will be enjoyable. You will be glad you did it...

Good evening! I collect wordlwide yet I have a number of countries and colonial territories that are more favourite ones.

PS! At the moment I'm looking any kind of information about the Afghanistan illegal/bogus etc "issues" between 1989 to 2021 and would like to kindly ask those who have information and/or knowledge about the topic (including legitimate issues between 1989 to 2021) to share the information with their expertise in any form.

Hello everyone,

I am Richard, living in Victoria, Australia. Recently returned from overseas jobs and dusted off my stamps again. Looking for supplies I wasn't sure there was still an active philatelic community 'out there'. Growing up in The Netherlands as a young(er) lad in the seventies, visiting the monthly stamp exchange and auction in a smoke-filled community room with mainly old men made me fear that there would be a dwindling number of stamp collectors in the future.

My first major dust-off of my mainly thematic collections was in the nineties, when I lived in California in a town with quite an active philatelic society - annual exhibits and show organized locally, club auctions with high quality material and monthly presentations of member supplied topics. My collection of early Netherlands expanded well.

Returning to The Netherlands in mid 2000's I got quite upset with the philatelic services. Post offices closed, one had to buy 10 stamps at a time (I needed only 1!), and these self-adhesive things, and later on these self-design things took the fun out of it. There were euros now, and the guilder had gone.

Fast forward again, and recently we returned to Australia, where grandchildren are growing up in lockdown. They barely know how the postal system works, barely know what a stamp is and what it signifies, and I thought it a good idea to teach them. Bought a few kg of Australian kiloware. That backfired quite spectacularly. I can't have the grandchildren touch my newfound treasures, at least not for the first kilo of soaking stamps ! I rekindled my dislike of self-adhesives (I had forgotten that Australia was a quite early adopter of that technology - just think of the generations that are missing out of the taste of stamp glue and the fear of paper cuts in your tongue with the final closure of the envelope).

Then I found this forum, read up on a 10-year old story of Dutch forgeries that had gone past me, browsed the net to found the closure of that story (convictions in 2019), found a great set of articles on types and plate positions of the third issue of King William of The Netherlands, and some fantastic write-ups of Dutch Child Welfare series. I'm hooked again.

I'll probably lurk more than that I will write, but want to express my appreciation of this community and the immense archive of posts. Back to stamping now,

Richard

Hello and welcome to new Stampboards member Richard = rsoppe in Victoria, Australia.

Nice self-introduction, thanks :D You have a long experience of stamp collecting, in various contexts in several countries, and it is clear that your special interest in the early Netherlands issues makes you a serious philatelist. I like the fact that you have definite preferences and opinions about philatelic matters — they make your comments interesting and stimulating, and clearly you don't expect that everyone needs to hold the same opinions. I hope you will contribute to Stampboards more often than your first post predicts. I'm sure your contributions will be lively and informative.

Thanks for the reply! Actually I have seen this site and I'm exchanging letters with the site owner but there is still more information needed as several issues remain unanswered or without references. For example, the COPREFIL hinted part in Afghan illegal issue production - who knows more details and perhaps have some references to that?

Hello everyone..

I am Rabs from London (UK)...

I am here, possibly like many of the people on here because I got a huge collection from my father who passed a few years ago. I have just had it all locked up for a while but I would really like to see if any of them may be rare or sought after.

I know, I know.. Most collections like that arent worth anything but I just feel like I should check some out anyway as I want to do some justice to my dad and not just give them all away.

But thats why I am here.. To try and learn whats what.. Who, knows. It may spark an interest..

So I look forward to chatting with you guys and seeing what you have to say..

Cheers. Rabs.

(p.s. where is the best section to ask about this? I tried going in to the You ask the questions area, but it said I didnt have permission)

(p.p.s. You ask the question let me in now)

Kia ora!
I’m Abbi.
I’m a 19 year old artist and creator from New Zealand who fairly recently came into possession of a rather large bag of stamps - thank you grandad :)
I’ve been using them as bedroom decor as I have a particular interest in antiques and oddities (I’ve been told my room looks a bit like like the inside of Darwin’s ship or an explorers cabin), as well as a form of entertainment for a rainy afternoon. They’re quite beautiful and I’d like to learn a bit about where they come from as well as the worth of a few as my mother thinks I should sell some double ups. I’m pretty sure most of them aren’t really worth much but I’m more interested in the history of them.
Looking forward to meeting and learning from you all :)

Hi Abby and welcome to the stampboards.
I remember doing a similar thing when i was younger but I used FDCs on the ceiling instead.

I was well aware of the worth witch was barely the paper they were printed on.

Hope you get to know all you set your sights on.
Regards, Stellan.

Kia ora to Abbi = souldierproductions in Woodend(*), New Zealand

Your room sounds wonderful. Wealthy collectors of the nineteenth century were known to have a special room devoted to their collections of the magnificently assorted objects and specimens that fascinated them, and men like Charles Darwin and Joseph Banks were not far from such enthusiasms. The Germans had a special word for such a room — Wunderkammer, a "chamber of wonders". (Strictly, a Kammer is a quite small room, sometimes even a closet. An ideal place for storing all those fossils and rocks and butterfly collections and exotic artefacts that one collected.)

There is a shop in Melbourne's central business district called Wunderkammer. It sells a marvellous range of one-off items — old scientific instruments, entomological specimens, anatomical skeletons, etc. My wife and I were fascinated to visit it a few years ago. I'm sure you would love it.

Hello and welcome to CHOCO886 in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

Children's books are often wonderful works of art, both visually and textually. Stamps that celebrate them often select some iconic visual element from the books to reproduce on the stamp, particularly because that element is one of the things beloved by those who love the books. At other times the stamps take elements from movies based on the children's books. I think both types suit your collecting theme nicely.

Here are some British PHQ(*) cards for the Alice in Wonderland stamps issued in 2015.

(*) PHQ = Postal HeadQuarters (!). One of my recurring themes is to point out that acronyms are not self-explanatory. Those who use them may not know what words they abbreviate, and even if they do know, they may forget that others who are not familiar with an acronym will not understand the communication if they don't explain what it means.
Wikipedia wrote:The 'PHQ' stands for Postal Headquarters. All items published by the Post Office are given a number which is prefixed by letters. The first card issued, on 16 May 1973, was numbered PHQ1, and the numbering sequence has continued to the present day.
