My name is Peter, from far north New South Wales, Australia. I have been collecting and researching Australian permanent pictorial postmarks (both the “everyday “ and “first day of issue” types) for forty years. I hope to exchange information with other collectors about these.

Hello Peter = Bowyum in Lismore, NSW, Australia. Welcome to Stampboards :D

Pictorial postmarks are a narrow but popular collecting field.
Slogan postmarks seem to be gathering a growing following too.

I am Colin from Perth, Scotland (Not Australia or Tasmania!)
My collecting interests are wide but mainly centre presently on the Railway theme, Travelling Post Offices, inc Postal History.
I had a collection of USA precancels which I sold some time ago and now regret it, and looking to reinstate that interest.
I have been collecting stamps and philatelic material for over 30 years and been involved in local Societies where I have lived. Presently, I am President of my local PS in Perth.

A Stampboards welcome to Colin = carlstonman in Perth, Scotland.

You prompted me to do a bit of background reading.

The name Perth derives from a Pictish word for wood or copse
Some comparative statistics:
Perth, [central] Scotland: pop 46,960 [2018]
Perth, Western Australia: estd 1829; pop 2,059,484 [2018]
Perth, Tasmania [near Launceston]: estd 1821; pop 2,965 [2016]

Why can't I put a year on when Perth, Scotland was established? Read on:
Finds in and around Perth show that it was occupied by the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers who arrived in the area more than 8,000 years ago. Nearby Neolithic standing stones and circles followed the introduction of farming from about 4000 BC, and a remarkably well preserved Bronze Age log boat dated to around 1000 BC was found in the mudflats of the River Tay at Carpow to the east of Perth.

Good evening everyone,
I'm Gary and joined this forum in 2014 but it's taken me 6 years to introduce myself.
I started collecting stamps of the world when I was about 7 years old and by the age of 20 had a superb collection but stopped collecting. Then in 2008 my collection was destroyed by flooding and I was devastated, although I had stopped collecting I loved those stamps and missed them.
Then in 2011 I was in Malta to marry my then girlfriend and we found the Sliema Stamp shop. This was when I decided to start collecting again, but this time not world stamps but stamps of Malta. And not any stamps. I'm not a fan of the modern stamps that just look like a miniature glossy photograph, I like the older stamps from the Victorian to the first Queen Elizabeth 2 stamps, line engraved style stamps. These stamps, to me, are like miniature works of art, even with the print flaws, when you look at them closely you can see all of the dots and lines.
109 UMM (140).jpg
A great example of a lovely Malta stamp.
Anyway, it's good to be here.
Regards ....... Gary.

Hi Glen,

Well done on setting up this board. I hope it gets good use.

All the best

Hello Glen and all members of Stampboards.

I have had a break for several years but as I am fully retired now I would like to keep track of all the latest stamp news, opinions and views.

I only collect Australian, New Guinea, and The Vatican (don't know why, I just do) fine used mainly and I am also a keen Postcrosser. I have a collection of Maxi Cards and First day Covers.

I did sell a large section of my collection and gave other gems to my two Grand daughters who are keen collectors.

I have got the spark again and am collecting again but not as serious as before.

Thanks for the opportunity to join Stampboards.

Best wishes from short_circuit

Welcome back to Stampboards returning member chainsaw1 in Kentlyn, NSW, Australia.

Kentlyn's postcode is 2560.
According to Wikipedia:
Kentlyn is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia
58 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district.
(Members not in Australia: note the urban sprawl which still allows a
location 58km from the CBD to count as a "suburb".)

Hello fellow stamp collectors!

My name is Susie and I have always enjoyed stamps but immersed myself fully when I became a merit badge counselor. My collection has evolved into a teaching tool that I share with any youth that need a counselor for the badge.

I bundle up any duplicates I receive and send out to the kids.

I look forward to checking into the forum regularly or when I have a tricky stamp to identify.

Greetings from Eureka, California

Hello Susie = ssmelser in Eureka, California, USA, welcome to Stampboards.

Good on you for promoting stamp collecting among young people. It is an excellent hobby for learning
about the world in self-motivated, entertaining, seemingly effortless ways. The fact that you're taking the
hobby seriously is to your great credit. That will make you a fine role model for those you mentor. :D

Eureka

You prompted me to read about Eureka. I will add a bit of information (which you will know quite
well), for the interest of other Stampboarders who, like me, have not been to California's northwest.

Not surprisingly, the place name comes from California's Gold Rush era. Eureka was founded in 1850,
as a port on Humboldt Bay, with access to the goldfields. Although Humboldt Bay is California's second
largest bay, its narrow entrance, not easily noticed from the open sea, kept it unknown to European
settlers until 1849, when it was "discovered" by an overland expedition.

According to Wikipedia,
Eureka is the largest coastal city between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, and the westernmost city
of more than 25,000 residents in the 48 contiguous states...

Eureka (Hupa: do'-wi-lotl-ding, Karuk: uuth) is the principal city and county seat of Humboldt County in
the Redwood Empire region of California... The Wiyot people lived in Jaroujiji (Wiyot: "where you sit
and rest"), now known as Eureka, for thousands of years before European arrival. They are the farthest
southwest people whose language has Algic roots.
In fact, the interaction of the Europeans with the Native Americans in Eureka is largely a sad history,
paralleling the sad history of European treatment of indigenous people almost everywhere Europeans
settled during the past five centuries. (Australia has many sad encounters since European settlement.)
The Wikipedia article includes some of the details...

Hello Stampers.

My passion is old stuff, anything interesting. I have focused on Brisbane family and city items since acquiring the 18th century portrait of Sir Thomas Brisbane's mother, Eleanora Brisbane.

So I tend to find Queensland items as well, an imperforate 1/2d stamp got me joining this group to find out more about it. Good to see thousands of collectors out there.

Cheers
Chris

Hi,

I'm Chris and I joined two or three years ago, but have only now had time to set aside for this. I'm based in London.

I collect (hoard, would be more appropriate) India, plus Malta, plus GB booklets - Machins. But my main interest at the moment is India.

Looking forward to discussing a few puzzling items I've come across over the past few weeks.

best wishes

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is staying safe during these extraordinary circumstances. I'm Joseph from Tamil Nadu in southern India. I've been collecting stamps for more than 20 years, though I took a break for a few years during my university studies. I've lived in the USA and South Korea for a few years, and am back in India now. The COVID19 pandemic has given me time to try and do some much needed and long-delayed sorting and organizing.

I used to collect many countries / themes but I’m trying to reduce my collecting areas. I collect mostly ‘modern’ material (except India) that I see is frowned upon by many senior philatelists :) Delving into older stamps is prohibitively expensive for me, and the tropical climate here leads to toning of the gum of older stamps especially, so I’ve limited myself to modern issues mostly.

Themes I collect include : GASTRONOMY, COMICS & ANIMATION, SHARKS, and stamps on other materials / lenticular stamps / holograms/ gold foil stamps/ scented stamps (I do feel these quirky issues are gimmicks, but I enjoy them nevertheless). I’m a foodie and so love collecting stamps & covers depicting various traditional cuisines and food habits from around the world. I see that issues on this theme are becoming more popular worldwide these days.

Postally used modern stamps from most countries, especially India, USA, Aus & NZ, the British commonwealth, South Korea.

I look forward to meeting like-minded stamp collectors from around the world to chat with and exchange information, and also to exchange stamps if possible.

Greetings!

Hello Joseph = fiem5422 in Palayamkottai, Tamil Nadu, India, welcome to Stampboards.

You said: I collect mostly ‘modern’ material (except India) that I see is frowned upon by many senior philatelists.
May I comment? In the past, philately was traditionally dominated by wealthy conservative philatelists, many of whom regarded collecting rare and expensive stamps as "real" philately, and more or less disregarded collectors who were not in their league. This was a kind of class structure in philately, and it left many collectors feeling that they were on the outside of the club. In recent years the barriers have lowered quite a bit. Many collecting areas that were once regarded as improper or unworthy have gained in popularity and respectability — this includes revenues, all kinds of cinderellas, perfins, thematic/topical collecting, collecting stamps because they appeal as works of art, collecting commercial covers, or covers with slogan cancels, for example. These days it is possible to be a serious collector, researching your collection, and finding items which are rare but inexpensive (because you are pioneering a collecting area that isn't already well researched and catalogued). Don't let others put you off collecting what you wish to collect. It is your enjoyment, your enthusiasm, your choice. And where you find others who appreciate your collection and share your enthusiasm, that is the company to keep. You can share your enthusiasm on Stampboards. :D

Thank you Uboro, RogerE and Cygnet!

RogerE, thanks for your encouraging comment. I agree with your statement that stamps are works of art. The older engraved stamps are works of art, so are modern stamps works of 'modern' art. There are many themes in modern stamp issues that I can relate to. I don't think any of the modern issues that I collect will appreciate in value over time, but I get satisfaction and knowledge from them, and that is more than enough.

I forgot to mention that I collect Zambia stamps/covers too, as my wife is from Zambia. But I find collecting modern mint and used issues a delightful challenge. I would like to meet other collectors who enjoy Zambian philately as well.

Joseph

Hello again Joseph = fiem5422. I'm glad you appreciated my comments.

Yes, collecting stamps with a personal geographical significance (in your case, stamps from Zambia, because it's where your wife comes from) is another excellent reason for developing a particular collection. You learn about all kinds of relevant things (not just geography, but much else, especially culture) from your collecting activities. Through the first-hand knowledge developed, you grow your appreciation of the place and its people.

By contrast, collecting items in the hope that they will gain in value is one of the least commendable reasons for stamp collecting, though it seems to be the main motivation of some collectors. A collection might grow in value, but making such a consideration one's main motivation is a recipe for missing out on all the possible joys of collecting what gives you knowledge and pleasure.
