I collect Italy, mainly Italian Social (not Socialist) Republic postal history.

Hello Number-O-Ne in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Welcome to Stampboards.

Is your Stampboards name inspired by "numero uno" by any chance‽

I think you will enjoy Waffle's thread where he is posting images of modern issues of Italy:

Hi everyone, I am a South African living in Canada. Currently I am busy catalogueing my husbands' inherited stamp collection (pretty good way to stay occupied during Covid) and have reached the South African part of the collection. I am enjoying reading and learning about stamps and the tricks to identify one series from another. Thanks for the informative discussions. Suzette.

Hello Suzette = Suzette01 in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
Welcome to Stampboards :D

Soon you will know a lot about stamps from your cataloguing work, so don't
be surprised if you decide to form a small collection of your own. It sounds
like a collection of South Africa (at least the issues from your lifetime) might
be a satisfying undertaking...

Hello all. My name is Piotr, I live in Poland in the beautiful city of Sopot. I have been dealing with philately for over 30 years (with breaks). I collect German stamps Germania 20 pf blue, with all available prints. I do not consider myself a specialist, but I am always happy to help in areas that are close to me.

Since Sopot neighbours on Gdansk, you live in an area with an intricate postal history.
Do you collect that postal history?

Yes, Stampboards has many philatelic topics covered and many experts, from around the world, that are very helpful. :)

Before starting a thread, please take a look at the Rules for posting on the board. Found at this link:

Also, please take a look at this thread which explains how to add images to your threads.

Is there a specific area/s or country/s that you collect?

Enjoy!

Hi, my first stamp, I was around 10 years old, is still in my collection. For many years I lost interest in collecting, but after I retired, I picked it up again. Pretty soon I found that limiting myself was a big help. I decided to collect only used stamps from The Netherlands and Finland. Not a strange choise, I'm Dutch and my wife is from Finland, so ...
Meanwhile I added my collection on a few online catalogues such as Colnect and LastDodo (former Catawiki). For Colnect I'm also an editor for Finland, Aland and Estonia.
Happy collecting to you all!
I wake up. Have a pee. Stand up. And think, damn it should have been the other way around.

Hello everyone,

I am very keen to get a bit involved in some threads here that are of interest to me. I have been 'ghosting' (visiting this site as a guest) for almost two weeks now (on a daily basis), and today I said "enough is enough, these blokes and ladies seem genuine, I should actually join/engage in these threads".

My name is Jonathan (aka: Jonozilla), I am 26, I have recently reopened my childhood collection, and I want to complete my ambition of having a complete collection of Australian stamps from the advent of Australia Post onwards (1914 I believe), including the other issuing authorities (eg. Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australian Antartic Territory... etc. etc.). I shall also opportunistically be collecting any Australian State stamps that come my way, but not hunting them down (that would get a little expensive... my budget is $5/wk :!: :!: ). I have a good foundation, just need to clean it up/sort chronologically (I have the 11th ed. Stanley Gibbins Australia Catoluge and approximatly a 1/4 - 1/3 of the stamps up to date so far... so a long way to go... but not from scratch by a long shot. ). I have a huge sentimental value for these stamps that are already in my collection, so I am not going to be picky in what condition these new stamps need to be in to fill in my gaps!

I would attach a photo... but I don't know how yet! The 'attach photo tutorial' thread (or whatever it is called) will be my next port of call.

Thank you all,
Jonozilla.

Hello Jonathan = Jonozilla in Purnim near Warrnambool, Vic, Australia.
Welcome to Stampboards.

We can easily identify with your emotional attachment to the collection you formed years ago.
Happy hunting to develop that collection, and we wish you lots of pleasure in pursuing that goal.
If you can find a local stamp group, even if they are not meeting face-to-face at present, you
can probably start up a phone/e-mail connection (perhaps even ZOOM). Sharing your enthusiasm
with that of others, especially those with more experience in philately, is a great way to experience
the social dimension of stamp collecting, which is personally enriching and very worthwhile.

Dear Roger,

Chashmebuddoor is a word of Persian origin widely used in North India. It is used to ward off the evil eye !
As I mentioned that Indian Mythology especially Ramayana is one of my favourite collection.
And I live in Delhi.

Cheers !

Very true ebay, to be honest if my Uncle hadn't given me a bag of is duplicates at age 7 (or 8?) I doubt I would have started collecting now under my own steam or just picked it up as an adult. It has been a slow burn my whole life. Never have I ever let a stamp go... even if for the last 10 years that meant just popping it in a bag with the rest. Something for me to sort through now!

Aahhh, thank you Krishna Kant = Chashmebuddoor, in Delhi, India.
Your answer gives us some new cultural insights — I'm very glad that I asked :D

You might already have noticed that Stampboards has a Stamps and Languages thread in which I contribute posts. For example, here is a recent post, inspired by a minisheet celebrating Indian masks:
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=90529&start=531

After reading your answer to my query, I tried entering "chashmebuddoor" into Google Translate.
Here's the result:
[Hindi]
चश्मेबद्दूर
[chashme baddoor]
May harmful sight not fall on you
.
Evidently the term "evil eye" was rendered "harmful sight".
.
Wikipedia wrote:The evil eye is a superstitious curse or legend believed to be cast by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware. Many cultures believe that receiving the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury, while others believe it to be a kind of supernatural force that casts or reflects a malevolent gaze back upon those who wish harm upon others (especially innocents). Talismans or amulets created to protect against the evil eye are also frequently called "evil eyes".

The idea expressed by the term causes many different cultures to pursue protective measures against it. The concept and its significance vary widely among different cultures, but it is especially prominent in the Mediterranean and West Asia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil_eye

A reasoned/rational viewpoint

Examination of the "evil eye" concept suggests various problems with the idea, including its implications that there are malevolent beings (or intelligent "forces") whose main desire is to bring random harm to innocent, well-behaved individuals. Examples of some problems with the concept: Where do such malevolent individuals/beings come from? How could science test for their existence? Why do some societies have a tradition of fostering belief in such beings, while other societies do not? Why would a simple talisman or incantation have any protective effect? (Look at the reinforcement by traditional stories but lack of objective evidence.)

Two more general questions: What are the psychological consequences of superstitious beliefs? Are there underlying evolutionary advantages or disadvantages to superstitious beliefs?

Hello all

I have finally got through the joining up process, using my phone. Had a few problems

I have recently dug out my stamp collection after many years of inactivity while working.

Now have retired and am in isolation most of the time ,just me and the hubby.

So time to get them organised again. I will certainly have a lot of questions. So look forward to chatting with you all

I live in Melbourne Australia.

Hello all.

I'm Andrew from Dublin Ireland, long time collector of stamps, coins and medals. In terms of stamps I collect British commonwealth, coins Morgan dollars and medals British empire with a strong leaning on China 1900 and long service medals
