Caught up with Aethelwulf this afternoon in downtown Hong Kong on our way back from Africa.

Jeremy had kindly offered to guide us on the HK subway tangle to the old Colonial PO at Stanley – still displaying the KGV Royal Crest and the works, he assures us.

Sadly our SAA flight from Jo’burg was 2 hours late arriving, so the best laid plans …………

He has a project to personally visit all the working PO’s in HK in his day’s off, and get clear cancels from each.

We did have a long lunch at local place, and had a range of wonderful Cantonese food.

Right next to the HUNG FAT PAWN SHOP!

Their specialty was an iced coffee type of affair, all served in a Champagne like bottle, and served in an ice bucket.

That makes stampboards get-togethers we have had in Africa and Asia in the past week, and in hindsight we should have organised one in Europe too, on the way across. :D

Here's the nice group who showed up at dwhopper - David's Toronto home for a superb BBQ out on the Scarborough Bluffs walk. Thanks to Irene for cooking while we were sightseeing.

That picture of a George Holzhauser with the pipe. Is that the same George Holzhauser that owns Colonial Stamps out of Los Angeles California? That George is famous for owning one of the three known 2 cent Large Queens on laid paper (Canada Scott #32) if it is him.

There is an interesting story about two of the owners of the two cent large queen on laid paper - Canada's rarest stamp. Before the third one was found there were only two - one owned by Gran Prix award winner Canadian philatelist Ron Brigham, and the other owned by George Holzhauser.

Story goes they were in Adelaide at an international exhibition a few years back and some Australian press overheard them joking that one would buy the others copy and burn it - so they would then own the only known copy. Anyway the press took it seriously and reported it as fact that this exchange and burning had happened the next day. Interesting story.

Now they would have to acquire three and burn two to achieve the same result.

Lovely Easter Sunday catchup today at the Sydney Opera House, with Nota Bene visiting from Sweden.

Fortunately Sydney turned on some good weather - looked a little grim in the morning. 8)

Another member from Melbourne, one “Michael Eastick,” was there. (See below). Eastick’s booth was literally across the way from that of the so-called “torstenweller.” Not coincidentally, Eastick was selling nothing but postage stamps. Between the two of them, they covered the philatelic market.

I believe that is Michael's OBE award from the Queen for sterling services to the Brewing Industry.

Margo and I flew up to Hong Kong last weekend, via Sydney-Adelaide-Melbourne-Cairns-Kong Kong (don't ask!), so a very lonnnng day in the air. (And back home Hong Kong-Coolangatta-Melbourne-Adelaide-Sydney.)
Image
After a 4am start to the day, we stepped off the plane at 7pm, schlepped ourselves downtown, and caught up above with active member here expatyeoman, and charming wife Natalie (at right) in a local restaurant in the SOHO area, that they recommended.

Last visit to Hong Kong we had lunch with aethelwulf, but he is on vacation in Prague now I understand, or we could have had a mini stampboards gathering!

Wandering around the open air unrefrigerated food markets there the next day, I am amazed in these high temperature high humidity countries, that anyone eating meat is not dead the following day - if not sooner! They all seen to survive amazingly well. Pork and poultry are super popular there, and those meats REALLY are dodgy, re storage in hot conditions. 8)

The Mao very large framed artwork I photo'd in a restaurant - was made entirely from their patron business cards - hard to see at a distance - amazing work!
