Photo Library - Stampboards get-togethers - worldwide!

Post by MargoZ »

There now is a well-established tradition of Stampboard get-togethers.

Great to put faces to names, and break bread and share a drink with members world wide.

Here are some images from some of these social activities.

That's the Queensland Reds, their Super 14 team. Not as good as our Waratah's though

Speaking of Waratah's, my son snagged a week's work experience this year with their high performance coach. Now you can guess what his current idea is for a career when he leaves school

Apart from those photographed, there were a number of other Stampboarders and connected characters there:

Michael Eastick and Torsten Weller (both members) had a stall at the show.

PennyBlack1840 was also working on a stall.

I also saw member Sdelcampe (Sebastian, owner of Delcampe auctions) in conference with a customers at his stall (though I didn't stop to chat).

Noel Leahy was busy on the Australia Post stand.

And I believe The Pom also saw member GJ50 and Arthur Gray on his travels.

So that makes at least 14 present in London on Saturday (though sadly not all at the same time)...

...and don't forget the show is continuing so others may be present later in the week

Ah-hah! I wondered who that young whippersnapper was. I didn't think they allowed anyone under the age of 40 in the door.

I didn't even notice the t-shirt, or I would have introduced myself.

I had intended to stay through Sunday, but I had exhausted my budget by mid-Saturday so I drove home and saved myself the hotel cost for a night. Wonderful show; I set a new personal record for purchases at a single show... and both the wallet and credit card are in traction.

Every dealer I spoke with was VERY happy with business. People were out there buying (hell, with the stock market not returning diddly squat, might as well put some money in collectibles as a hedge and do it with something you enjoy at the same time).

There was a reporter from the Chicago Tribune out there on Friday doing interviews, and the show made the front page of Saturday's paper. Unheard of in today's era.

I was at Chicagopex, but I forgot to take cards along this time. They must have been leftovers saved by the club from a previous show.

The range of dealers is among the best -- almost all are real professionals. I was able to buy new stock from dealers I'd seen only a couple of months before. That doesn't happen at every show.

There were also two major auctions (Rasdale and Regency) on the same weekend, one of them at the show. Gibbons also had a large booth, set up in the lobby, with a wide range of literature. I was able to purchase the 2011 1840-1970 BC catalog for $89, no postage at all. The 2012 was available for $129.

Some nice stamp purchases include a stock of France Peace and Commerce issues, generally F-VF with multiple 5Fr (the small one!), at under 5% cv; a nice lot of 19th century US covers to 15c rate, 250 total for $360; and a bunch of late 60s Korean domestic covers, under a buck each.

I did find some interesting Australia covers, mostly decimal, but nothing eye-popping. Also some Tonga commercial covers and PNG aeros. These will make it to e*ay soon.

For the record, I'm strictly a buyer at these events. I don't have the temperament to stand behind a table and deal with the general public.

Today we flew out from SYD at 3pm Dec 31, New Year's Eve, and due to the varies of the Date Line we got to Sacramento, California, also at 3pm Dec 31 after 20 hours of flights and airports, via LAX and SFO.

Celebrated NYE here tonight with stampboards member ghopper02 and wife Lisa along the Riverfront, under the impressive fireworks at the delightful "Old Sacramento" area.

Yes we had some yesterday as it was very hot here.

It is allegedly orange juice based - not that you'd know really, with many Arabic inspired spices and flavours added.

A strange drink really. :)

It just turned 60, so the current bottle have old ads from the 1950s on them above.

Yes an interesting place. We visited THE oldest free standing structures on earth today. 3500 BC .... centuries before the pyramids, and the Romans and Greeks. Stone blocks up to 20 tons each.

All on a dry desolate hill on the Malta south coast - the Hagar Qim Temples. Eerie!

pitronix - well done, that surely is our first member photo from Sarajevo!

We were in Cape Town this week, and caught up there with member Greg Nichol for a drink or 3.

I carried some "Desert Magic" drying books and some other bits and pieces over with me to save him on the mailing costs.

I like the shirt, pitronix. 8)

Let me know if you're visiting HK, I've only had one (brief) meeting face-to-face with another Stampboarder, over in Canada, a quick meet in an office lobby to deliver a purchase to Canadastamper.
Collecting Mongolia; Thailand; Indo-China; Mourning Covers; OHMS.

I attended the American Philatelic Society’s Annual Show (Milwaukee, WI, August 2013) at the last minute. I made no plans to get together with other Stampboarders there, but ran into a few anyway.

This Stampboards member, “torstenweller,” (an obvious pseudonym) was there from Melbourne. Torsten Weller was selling nothing but postal history, of which I bought several pieces.

Another member from Melbourne, one “Michael Eastick,” was there. (See below). Eastick’s booth was literally across the way from that of the so-called “torstenweller.” Not coincidentally, Eastick was selling nothing but postage stamps. Between the two of them, they covered the philatelic market.

SB member “Steven Zirinsky” (New York, NY) was there, selling Australasian goodies. That’s the back of his head in the lower right. (See the helpful blue arrow below).

The APS had a table offering a “Bucket of Stamps.” (Below). Kids paid a buck. Adults paid $5. It was somewhere between panning for gold and looking for the quarter you dropped down the sewer. Still, a huge bargain and tons of fun.

This is my favorite picture - a dime booth as it looked at the end of the day. There were stamps all over the floor. I assume a busload of lunatics pawed through the merchandise...using their feet. (Below).

The space for Exhibits was vast, and was at least twice as wide as this photo of the long, long rows depicts.
Indiana Jones's Lost Ark of the Covenant was stored among these rows.
