Lovely catching up again with you Stuart and your gorgeous family.
Young Christopher takes a good picture as well as doing a passable Skippy
Listen to those boys and let us repay the hospitality in Oz sometime!

Just about to leave Athlone and do a lazy arc along the coast to Ennis tonight.

If you're that way you must see the Cliffs of Moher or further down go into Adare, one pretty village!! Used to fish the Shannon when good fly sport was about.

Have stayed at both Adare Manor (amazing hotel in beautiful grounds with the River Maigue running through them) and the Dunraven Arms across the road as a less pricey coaching Inn with excellent food.

Wherever you go round there you will love it, one of my favourite areas of Ireland, I would probably avoid Limerick though (apologies to anyone from Limerick it's just not on my top 500 list  )

I took Mrs.TRC (who is from Co.Limerick :D ) to the Adare Manor for our wedding anniversary; a lovely place but rather too much wine consumed - a 3am bathroom visit resulted in me taking the wrong door from our bedroom and I found myself standing in the corridor....in my birthday suit.
After 10 mins of gentle knocking; she finally answered from behind the door asking "who is it?"

Oh how we laughed....

This was taken on top of Mount Gillen just outside Alice Springs last May. Unsuccessful search for Dusky Grasswrens... :(

Michaelmas Cay, off Port Douglas N. QLD, last November. Fantastic seabird location, and I was the only one on the boat who wasn't interested in snorkelling.
Who wants to look at fish when there's so many birds about??

I agree with some other members. Guiness is different and better when you have it while you are actually in Ireland. I had a a lot of pints of it in Killarney where I visit in 1999. We did the Ring of Kerry tour, went to Cork and saw Blarney Castle - did not kiss the blarney stone cause 300 tourists do so each day - yuck and I already have the gift of the gab. Beside you have lean backwards 500 ft up at the top of the castle walls.

Great trip - great people - they are all staunch Catholics down in County Kerry - Gerry our bus driver had 8 kids and they don't like the English - something about Queen Elizabeth the First and Cromwell marching in and slaughtering the Irish folk and giving their land away to remote landlord British aristocracy.

They told me the legend behind Irish names - during the potato famine of 1847 the British gave out food to the Irish peasants - one of the conditions of receiving the food was they had to anglicise their last names.
So O'Connell became Connell. The O refers to the son of. It if it was Fitz first that refers to the illegitimate son of. So FitzGerald is the illegitimate son of Gerald. O'Connell is the rightful heir son of Connell.

So if your Irish name has no O in front it your ancestors took the food from the British. If you did not your name retains the O in front of it.

Interesting stories

Here I am outside the Chocolate factory at Yarra Glen in the Yarra Valley - Victoria, Australia (15 minutes from where I live :D ).
One of my grand daughters calls me Oompa Loompa so I will be sending her this picture for a laugh.

Image

I must say the chocolate is excellent - I highly recommend a visit.

While you are in the area, drop into the local wineries - there are only about 80 wineries with 50 open for tastings and cellar door sales.

I don't recommend going to all 50 in one day though as after about 4 or 5 tasting sessions the wine starts to taste the same and you get a massive headache (ask me how I know)

No need to watch out for Oompa-Loompas on the road. In the book, Grandpa Joe tells Charlie "nobody ever goes in [to the factory], and nothing ever comes out, except the chocolate." I've read the book many times...

Barbados is great and Bajan's are friendly. Don't miss the Oistins fish fry at the fish market on Saturday nights on the South coast of Barbados just south of St Lawrence Gap - great flying fish recipes over open fires - Harrison's Cave tour - saw everyday a Virgin 747 airliner flying in overhead filled with British tourists - great place and great memories of my time there

Seemed pretty funny to be eating/drinking a "Halo Halo" is a place called "The Mitre Restaurant" (see the menu) overlooked sternly by all kinds of Catholic Cardinals -- not sure if the amusingly named Philippines CARDINAL SIN was on the walls - probably. Google him - THAT was his name.

In the glass, is a NON mushed up (yet) "Halo Halo" drink/meal.

Behind us, tucked behind some garish Madonna statues, was a framed sheet of the Pope Visit stamps to the Philippines.
