I love seeing buskers, loved hearing them in the underground stations, the sound was brilliant.

I had to look twice at the bull, thought you were in Brum.

Good to have an appreciative audience, Brummie - I'll know where to set up next time. :D

This is the new cast of a Hereford bull in St. Peter's Square, Hereford - my home town. Did my PhD in Brum, though, so I know it well... ah, those leafy lanes of Edgbaston...

Ahhh thanks :)

The camera can be flattering.... I'm starting to go grey. I'm 39.

It's gotten better but when I was in my 20s it was, on occasion, difficult to get taken seriously by some dealers.

I appear to have drunk so much that a Heineken sign is coming out of my head. I am reliably informed that that is never a good thing.

It's great to see what everyone looks like and putting faces to names.

I don't get photographed very often but a couple of months ago one of my friends wanted to take some pictures of my bees doing things for her 'Natural History Illustration' course.

Sharon took a picture of me as well and I decided to share it.

This is me and the hive. There's a great crop of Passionfruit on the fence behind which has since been made into icecream and other yummie things. Hence my gut.

This photo is from a few years ago. My wife found the T-shirt and just had to buy it for me. It's the only stamp related piece of clothing I have.

I wore it to the 2013 Melbourne World Stamp Exhibition and got many positive comments.

It was hard to find a photo to put up here because I always end up behind the camera.

At least the stamp looks reperforated - I know, who is looking at the stamp.

Saw two versions of the same thing last week whilst walking through Times Square in New York at 6.00pm, one of the young ladies would have done to be a little more well developed (at least for my taste), the other sadly was suffering from a gravity problem.

The combined effect was to cause a pedestrian mess on the sidewalk, however.

Kindest regards, Richard

Yes, my fault for starting this de-rail .. I think we should add more MEMBER photos here folks, and get ourselves back on thread. :)

Here below is a photo I took last month in Toronto of long time members, and a large BBQ hosted there by dwhopper.

dwhopper (right) has a huge stamp den packed to the ceiling with scarcer SA/NT and other state cancels, and many scarce Australian “usage” covers as well.

Along with fellow Torontonian, Greg Ioannou, (left) they between them have probably the finest collection of these cancels in the world - all 10,000 miles from Adelaide!

Drifting back to the topic again ............... :)

Image

I was in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon a few weeks back and signed up the world's #1 collector and expert on that country to join here.

Tiny little country - population 6000 or so. EVERYTHING is flown or shipped in from France. Even milk and butter and beer, despite being surrounded by Canada. Not often do you travel to a country with NO traffic lights - even tiny Nauru has some of those!

His wife has designed stamps for there, and I suspect these are 2 of her designs on stamps shown below he affixed.

We flew in to Newfoundland from Saint Pierre at the tail end of Hurricane Arthur, and the little plane was getting buffeted like a cork when coming down to land, I truly thought the tiny thing would flip right over, if the wind gusted any harder at touch down.

White knuckle ride. The Ferries from SPM were cancelled due to the high winds and big seas etc. So at least we got out.

Talk about small world - we had coffee in Saint Pierre et Miquelon with Jean-Jacques Tillard, and he speaks good English.

He is SPM born and resident, and owns the finest collection in existence of these stamps, expertises them, and has won about a dozen International Gold Medals for it.

He also has published several deluxe hardback books on them, that I photo here.

I even got him to join stampboards! Our first SPM member. 8)

How did we know about him - his books were in the lobby of our little hotel as guest reading, as he knows the owner!

We arrived on the weekend there, and of course the PO was closed all that time, so he kindly offered to frank and mail postcards to members here, and hand cancel them, as he used to work for the PO there.

The old French Franc stamps currency are still valid for use there, as you can see on photo below.

Tillard is very enthusiastic about his stamp passion, and has even persuaded the FIAF to stage an exhibition there September 24-28. Most of the official Judges will stay in our 12 room hotel - about the largest on the Islands - "Hotel Jacques Cartier".

Judging will be by an internationally-accredited panel using the standards of the International Federation of Philately (FIP), and eight levels of medal will be awarded.

If I can be forgiven a small divergence ...

I can't find the direct quote, but it runs something like this:
Sir George Reid, when Premier of the Colony of New South Wales in the 1890s, was addressing a public meeting. Sir George was also a - how shall I put it? - man of considerable substance.
A heckler called out to Sir George, 'What are you going to call it, George?'
Sir George replied 'If it is a boy, I shall name him George, after myself. If it is a girl, I shall name her Victoria, after our dear queen. But if, as I suspect, it's all piss and wind, I shall name it after you.'

I'm not sure of the gender yet

Brummie

The glasses are similar to ones I had as a schoolboy in the late 1960's or early 1970's.

Kindest regards, Richard

That's funny, I was thinking the same thing. Look just like the glasses I used to wear in the early 70s.

And I'll bet neither of you picked them, you just wore what they told you to. :?:

Exactly, no one was that hung up about glasses being fashionable until the 90s. My first pairs up to 1998, were big lens Hubble telescope thingees. Yet I never had a problem with them until some fools told me they were dated and passe and like the ones Deirdre had on Coronation street.

By 1998 I had the ultra slim ones coming back into fashion and found them horrible, thank God now wider lense ones are all the rage.

In fact in the old days, if you wore glasses you got cruel remarks. I got my first pair at 13 and was called all the usual names "Four eyes, square eyes, metal eyes" etc.

Thanks so much to whomsoever has the foresight to send out the thread links and directive emails.

They are really helpful.

Nice to put faces to names of some of the members as well.

Richard is of course right - the photo is from 1970 when I was 22. However, no-one told me to wear them, nor did I worry about fashion, too poor to afford any but the basic frames (vaguely Harry Palmer, I'd say).

I have no idea what I hold in my right hand - obviously not a phone, possibly a fountain pen?

However, in the interests of modern spectacle studies, this is what the fellow looks like now, the frames remaining stubbornly retro.

I should add that this pair is used for my cricket, not my stamp-collecting.
