I get an extra hour to drink tonight!!!!! WOOOHOO!!!
I love the American legal attitude to daylight saving. We were there with my band but our permit only allowed us to do concerts and festivals. The unions put a ban on club work.

When we got to Shreveport, one of the club owners made us his guests for the week and we never had to pay for a drink. We would have liked to play for him as a thankyou but if we'd upset the unions, we would never have got back there.

Guess what? Saturday night was daylight saving night and legally, the hour from 2AM to 3AM was open for clubs to stay open or not as they chose. Most had a 2AM licence back then. The local Union rep told us he wouldn't mind if we played that hour as it didn't exist so that's what we did.

I often wondered what happened if you robbed a bank or something during that hour.
Where do the years go? I went from philandering to philately and didn't even notice.

Valid point and one I had never thought of. I do my drinking at home. :)

Today is Remembrance Day.
11 November is "rememberal" for a number of reasons in Australia, including
"Armistice Day, a bushranger was slaughtered, and Gough was betrayed"...

(cf http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnj68nq2n4c )

Cheers, etc, to the chaps and chapettes on deployments....

Another wet Friday night Saturday morning here in Busan.
For the last 4 or 5 weeks we've had sunshine Monday to Friday and rain at the weekends  Where do I send my letter of complaint? It's just not good enough! I never voted for rain at the weekends! Much more of this and I'll be thinking of changing countries- well.... after my Secret Santa loot arrives
It's good to shoot the breeze with like-minded people.

I am typing this form ALONAH, Southern Tasmania on Bruny Island.

We took the ferry across today.

Talk about DESOLATE!

On a Monday night the only accommodation we could find was this tiny little Motel cubicle at Alonah.

Right on the beach - there is nothing nearby. Except the Alonah General Store and a derelict wooden building next door that might well have been the orignal PO 100 years back.

Now ALONAH is a big deal to stamp collectors. Cancels from there are SCARCE. A friend had one finish on ebay a few hours back for $A435, struck on an otherwise 10c retail 1d red pictorial stamp - shown below.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271099218474?nma=true&si=zoqJsAES ... _cvip=true

Talk about a small world! 95% Of Tasmanians have not been here, much less 'mainlanders". :)

It is cold (well, relatively, since it is only 16C at 12:15pm) and somewhat wet here in Melbourne. Mind you, on Saturday the forecast is for a blistering 37C.

Yesterday (Thursday December 6), we ended up with a torrential downpour that caused 45mm of rain to fall in 20 minutes and a tornado which killed 3 people in West Auckland. They were on a construction site and a concrete panel collapsed on them, killing them instantly
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10852513
The storm was one of the worst in years. We usually always get a downpour in December for some reason.

We have just had a very warm night, at 7am it is 22C. We are heading for 37C as a high today, with a change (bringing storms) to arrive around 6pm.

By contrast, tomorrow's maximum is a forecast 20C. All this after a week in which we had snow up in the alps to the east of us and struggled to get past 16C on Wednesday.

Yet again, a wet Friday night after a sunny week......I'm seriously getting fed up with this. Wet weekends every week for months!!!

On another note. The right-wing presidential candidate came to Busan today and made a speech near my school. This resulted in a protest demonstration. Chaos in the subway!
Not to be left out, 2 hours later the left-wing candidate showed up and made a speech opposite my school.....huge police presence....traffic at a standstill and chaos on the subway.
As a result I got no supermarket shopping done, and just went straight home after work. I doubt if my empty cupboards will be high on the political agenda.

The right-wing candidate Park Geun-Hye is the daughter of a former dictator, and I can't find anyone to give me a reason why she is standing for election.
All anyone says is, "Oh her father used to be the president".
I ask, "Didn't her father have people killed who disagreed with him?"
"Yes, but old people liked him because he was good for the economy", says my student.
"But why vote for her?" says I.
Puzzled, my students look at me and say, "Because her father used to be president"
I've had circular arguments like this many time in Korea. :o

Good evening to everyone out there...

Just 8pm in Niedersachsen, Germany and just coming in with my wife from the local mulled wine cottage. Outside about -3° C and a little bit windy without clouds.

We enjoyed the "Feuerzangenbowle" ; a punch with rum and burning sugar. Very delicious, the more you order...

A wonderful time to prepare the weekend and looking forward visiting the bright Christmas market in Osnabrück tomorrow after we had a good breakfast out with friends.

Tomorrow will be about 6° C during the day, so the today present white snow will be removed slowly

Paul,

Since you have managed to track me down, the whole building (apart from the shop below) is ours but my personal office is on the second floor - I will leave you guessing as to which window the photo was taken from though.

The picture (from Street view) is from before we renovated the building three years ago so it looks a lot nicer now.

Has anyone ever told you that you would make a good detective :)

Chris.

Good afternoon everyone. Hope the Christmas preparations are going well for those who are celebrating...

Tonight is the night when Mrs-H and I take the domestic help out for their Annual Staff Dinner and outing. It's just our way of thanking them for all their efforts through the year. We always select one of the better restaurants in town for this - only the best!!!

This year, we are taking the cook, the housekeeper, the gardener, the chauffer, the chambermaid, the cellarmaster, the ladies' maid, the butler, and of course ourselves.

For this first time, we are also inviting the site health and safety officer and the pastoral care assistant. One must move with the times, you know!!!

That'll be a table for two at Zen, then

We made the long drive today along dusty mountain roads from Arequipa Peru to the Colca Canyon ... deepest in the world.

In doing so we reached nearly 5,000 metres - 4,910m to be exact or 16,109 feet. I got some altitude sickness, but that is not uncommon here.

To put that into perspective - the highest paved road in North America (not open all year round) is Mount Evans in Colorado at 14,260', and of course that is near double the height of the tallest point in Australia - Mount Kosciuszko at 7,310 feet. So 16,109' is serious height in a vehicle.

Passing herds of wild Alpaca and Vicuna and Llama along the way, we got lucky at the Canyon to have several huge Andean Condors circling overhead, swooping to as low as a few metres above us at times.

They are the world's longest living birds it seems, and the largest flying birds.

The only camera I have is a little cigarette pack size point and shoot Fuji I use to photograph stamps, with almost no zoom. So these shots have none of the sharpness of our resident wildlife experts sadly!

One came up over a cliff in the updrafts, out of nowhere, and flew right over our heads, and I did not have the camera lens open even for him!

I was surprised the tail feathers were so short. We watched one close-by for about 10 minutes swirl on the updrafts without flapping a wing. Charles Darwin said he watched one swirl for 30 minutes and not move a wing-tip.

Here in Korea, I've only had Christmas Day and Jan 1st off work in the last couple of weeks....this my school's busy time :? I'm going to try to post more tonight and Sunday as I'm only working 6 days/week this month!

I shouldn't complain though as I do actually enjoy my job :D

It has been below zero for about a month now. The snow I mentioned in a previous post (Dec 8th) has still not melted in some places, and this is in the city centre!!!
I believe staying at home with a good movie + cheesey toast and wine could be in order this weekend!
It's good to shoot the breeze with like-minded people.

Amazing weather. Aberdeen at 13.3oC was warmest in UK yesterday. Warmer also than Madrid Spain they tell me. No snow this winter so far any nearer than 50 miles . Ski slopes melting !
whatever it is -------it's better than a poke in eye with a wet umbrella !

Aloha from Hawaii. About noon on Saturday. 2200 foot level in rain forest on the Big Island of Hawaii, 10 miles as the crow flies from active Kilauea Volcano. 4.4 earthquake last night which is not unusual. Great place to live if you like humid, warm, rainy weather with a good amount of sun. Much different from my roots in Cambridge, England. Need dehumidifier to keep stamps dry.
Happy New Year.

@all

Good morning from Lingen - Germany, The nice little town is located in the north western part of germany close to the dutch border. Next big city is Hamburg. I guess all of you will more likely know the bigger german towns.
