Chris
Chris, I'll try to help you here. Try this method:

Click on 'view your posts', near the top of this page, which will present you with a summary of the topics (threads) you have contributed to.

Hover over the Topic title you are looking for, which should highlight it with a solid underscore in blue.

Click on that, which will take you to the start of the topic (thread).

Option 1: Just the main topic link

Move your cursor up to the (http://www.stampboards..... in the address bar. Right click, which will highlight it. Select 'copy'.

Start a new post (using the 'post reply' button). Right click and select 'paste'. The link will appear in your post, which you can then move around (with 'cut' and 'paste').

Option 2: A particular post within the topic link

Scroll through until you find the post you want and click the heading next to the words Post Subject.

That post will shunt up to the top.

The above method works the same on 'View new posts' as well.

Should you want to reply to a post, in order to quote (or part quote) what that person has written, click on the quote button. Remove the parts that you don't need then add your own reply after the ending {/quote} command.

Should you want to do exactly the same AND paste in a link, do the copy and paste into your reply FIRST before chopping and changing the quote.

For the purpose of this thread, here is your post:

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting?

I started when I was about 10 years old when I was living in New York. I bought a stock book and acquired some approval stamps and also had friends and relatives save them for me.
I continued collecting when my family moved to Greece when I was 12 years old. Again mainly US, Some W/W and since we were in Greece started collecting and trading for those.
Continued when I returned to the US to attend college, although did not have time to do much except put things away in a box.
After getting married and having children in my early 20s I started buying some stamps and organizing them a little better. Work and responsibilities did not allow much time and I finally started back after the kids left home and I had all these stamps used and new to organize.

Congratulmation to those who could make the complete list in this very nice thread. But I took out some time for it .

When and how did you start stamp collecting?
At young age already because an elder relative did collect stamps but took me years to gain knowledge and come with a real plan.

How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby ? In winter more then in summer but an average of 3 à 4 days /week.

What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards? I left the societies and communities a long while aside but just took up the intrest to get involved and hope to find at least some quality time.

What is one thing you always have in your refrigerator? Cheese and soup. The soup I brew myself and the cheese is an adiction.

Favorite topic stamps ? Especialy love the long running definitive stamps "the real stamps" mostly they have a broad line of different values, many reprints, plates, dates, changing postal prices etc ...

Pet ? Cats of course.

Favourite TV show ? Always in for good action series or historical related series. Just a few in random order = Black List, Game of Thrones, X-files, The Viking, 24, The bridge, ... and I even forgot some.

So many people I would love to meet, especially my Great Grandfather. I read so much about him but never had the luck to meet him.

Music is very complex. I can appreciate any style and have not 1 standing out on top. Just give me a real great musician who can perform under any condition and I will love her/him. Oh I miss Amy, what a great voice - she reminded me a lot of Edith Piaf.

Kind regards Gam
Just a place to meet people with same interest in live - and a way to enlarge a view.

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting?
I started when I was about 14 years old when I was living in Mexico. I used to buy the magazine “Mecánica Popular“ (Latin American version of the US Popular Mechanics) in which there was included a philately section written by Ignacio A. Ortiz-Bello. I fell in love of stamps.
After several years I stopped accumulating stamps and they remained lying in boxes for many years.
The boxes moved together with me to my new apartment after my marriage; then together with my family the boxes went to Italy; there, it was a brief awakening which finished when we moved back to Mexico. Again the boxes moved together with the family to Austria.
Only 5 years ago I have started up again to organize and grow up my thematic collections meanwhile tried (unsuccessfully) to shorten the rest of accumulation.

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting? Age 10, CFB Greenwood (N.S. Canada) - school teacher's basement every 2nd Sunday night.

2. What Countries or topics do you primarily collect? Leaning towards COUNTRIES (Canada, US, the colonizers - GB, France, etc, Germany and occupied Europe, all Africa) and TOPICS (soccer/footie and Olympics).

3. What is your favorite country or topic to collect? As above, not entirely sure...

4. How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby? Me: "a couple, maybe 5-6"; My Wife: "every waking moment and then some, at least 80-120"; The-Fly-On-The Wall: "somewhere in the middle of the preceding estimates".

5. What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes? Guitar & singing; reading (esp. math and history); practicing my ad lib comedy routines (classified by my family as "being generally and profusely annoying").

6. What is your favorite movie? Pulp Fiction.

7. What is your favorite stamp? The $100,000 one I'm hoping to discover.

8. What is your favorite food? Any version of something that used to "moo" for a living and is now on the way from the barbie to my (optional) plate.

9. Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it? People not bending to my superior intellect (quickly followed by my family pointing out that arrogance + massive amounts of trivia <> knowledge).

10. What is your professional background? Health care management for seniors/disabled then (past 30 years) investment strategist (consultant to financial advisors for their top clients - not a sales person).

11. What one person, dead or alive, would you like to meet? My mom. I never told her what a heroic person she truly was to me; and I'd like to ask an unanswered question:did she love me and did she think I'd ever turn out as well as I did.

12. What is your favorite TV show? Modern Family.

13. What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards? Wandering aimlessly through the etherworld late late at night.

14. What is one thing you always have in your refrigerator? Empty space - nothing lasts long there...

15. Who is your favorite musician? Far too many to list in less than 80,000 characters but Dylan, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Stones, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Staple Singers, Talking Heads - basically anything before the music died in the mid-1970s. [Plus, strangely, NWA and Eminem!]

16. If you won the lottery, what stamps would you buy? 50% of the loot for a couple big trunk loads from EVERYWHERE in the world; 30% to a team of curators to sort through, organize and display for my approval; 20% to start a stamp club for kids where I would be the Head Master. All this is contingent on my having anything left after buying all the guitars I want, hiring the best studio musicians available and embarking on a sold-out world tour (my wife wants to know if there are any two-person theatres in Australia - I think she's being sarcastic).

This seems like a good place for my second post to get the "Newbie" monkey off my back!

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting?
My father collected stamps since the 1940’s. He got me started collecting them when I was around six years old in 1970. In fact, he had all three of his kids (myself and my older brother and sister) collecting stamps back then. I remember every time a new stamp came out, he would always buy a full sheet of them and then split it up into blocks. He would keep a plate number block for himself and he would give the “mail early” block to one kid, the “use zip code” block to another kid, and a third block (sometimes plain, sometimes a plate number) to the third sibling. He would then give the left over stamps to our mother to use for postage. He did this for many years until sometime in the early 1980’s but he stopped because the post office started issuing so many stamps each year that he couldn’t keep up with it.

As time passed, the children scattered about the country and our father pretty much stopped collecting stamps (with one exception). My brother and sister lost interest in their stamps but I continued to pursue my own collection. I began by picking up in the 1980’s (where my dad had stopped) and built complete sets from that point to present day. I also continued to pursue older stamps including a complete run of mint airmail stamps including the Zeppelins.

2. What Countries or topics do you primarily collect?
I pretty much only collect USA.

4. How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby?
It varies, but at least a couple of hours every week and sometimes dozens of hours. Just depend on what is going on.

5. What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes?
I collect a series of trading cards called "Wacky Packages" and also dabble in card magic!

6. What is your favorite movie?
Hard to say but I would probably say "Jaws" and "Westworld".

7. What is your favorite stamp?
The favorite stamps in my collection are the Zeppelins.

8. What is your favorite food?
I really like Italian and Chinese

10. What is your professional background?
I.T. - Computer Programming

13. What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards?
A link to the site from the Virtual Stamp Club

14. What is one thing you always have in your refrigerator?
Beer!

15. Who is your favorite musician?
Eddie Van Halen

16. If you won the lottery, what stamps would you buy?
I would have to go after an inverted Jenny and I would try to get mint copies of every U.S. stamp issued (that were available for sale)

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting?
It was X-mas 1960 when I was 7. I got a stamp album under the tree. Dad collected when he was a kid growing up in Hungary, so he was very encouraging with it. I've posted a photo of that first album on another thread.
I've read all the posts on this thread and it's interesting how so many others got their start at 7-8 yrs of age too. Coincidently, that's about when I got my son started and now my grandson.

2. What Countries or topics do you primarily collect?
ALL countries. But primarily Canada, Hungary(born there), Hong Kong, and Commonwealth common designs.

3. What is your favorite country or topic to collect?
Can't really say. It changes over the years as I learn something new and then collect it for a while till something else takes over. But probably the countries that don't exist anymore. Geography and history have always been of great interest to me.

4. How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby?
Lots! Now that I'm retired. Winters more than summer.

5. What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes?
I've always loved the outdoors. Lots of hiking, backpacking, camping, and canoeing. I took a lot of school groups on extensive backpacking trips and was a whitewater canoe instructor for many years. As others have mentioned, the body doesn't have the stamina and strength it used to, but I still do as much as I can. It's been a lot more golf the last few years, and travelling.
I also enjoy reading sci-fi, murder mysteries (have collected all of Ian Rankin's books), and non-fiction stories of survival & adventure.

6. What is your favorite movie?
Probably Jeremiah Johnson & Shawshank Redemption

7. What is your favorite stamp?
My newest one! :)

8. What is your favorite food?
Love pot roast - beef with potatoes, carrots, & onions.
Really enjoy Hungarian & Thai food.

9. Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it?
People who pretend they don't know any better.

10. What is your professional background?
Teacher & Administrator for 34 years. I'm still failing at retirement because I keep substitute teaching. Taught mostly grades 8-11, but now I'm having too much fun doing everything. First graders are FUN.

11. What one person, dead or alive, would you like to meet?
Tough to pick one. Anyone who has had a big impact on the world as we know it - maybe Galileo.

12. What is your favorite TV show?
MASH, Judge Judy, Big Bang Theory

13. What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards?
Googling for philatelic & stamp sites. Serendipity.

14. What is one thing you always have in your refrigerator?
1a. Beer
1b. Salami/sausage

15. Who is your favorite musician?
The Beatles.
But, favourite album is Desperado by the Eagles, and favourite song is Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.

16. If you won the lottery, what stamps would you buy?
Hahaha .... As many as I could! For many years now, when I sort and catalog my latest ones, my wife asks if I've found my million dollar stamp yet. Maybe I can say "YES"
Regards,
JimFegy - Always something new to learn.

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting?

As a child, I liked seeing the stamps my uncle in Australia would use on letters to my mum. My parents collected the stamps from work too. I soaked stamps off in the bath with me in the bath. Hobby on hold during university, etc, and only returned to it when I got into penpalling.

2. What Countries or topics do you primarily collect? & 3. What is your favorite country or topic to collect?

Whatever comes my way. I do prefer topicals in themes I'm generally interested in. Science & nature, and postal/letter themed stuff.

4. How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby?

When I was writing 20+ postcards for Postcrossing, I sometimes felt that picking the stamps out for postage took longer than writing the postcard! I do umm and arr about which stamps to use for postage for the letters I send. I do spend in excess of 6 hours a week on letterwriting.

5. What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes?

Other than letterwriting, gardening, photography...

9. Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it?

People who smoke in front of their children, in cars with the children.

10. What is your professional background?

Science degree. Wife and mother at the moment.

11. What one person, dead or alive, would you like to meet?

Terry Pratchett.

12. What is your favorite TV show?

I don't have a television

13. What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards?

Norvic's wonderful site.

16. If you won the lottery, what stamps would you buy?

No idea, but I would make sure I had sufficient stamps for postage and would keep sending my maximum allowance on Postcrossing.

17 Are you interested in meeting other Stampboard posters?

Could be interesting. I have been to a Postcrossing meetup.

19 Are you interested in being part of a lobby group to pressure Postal Authorities to return to the original aims of the postage stamp- that is, a sticky label to show that a fee has been made for a service- and so restrict the number of issues every year most of which would now fail the 'genuine postal use' test

I am doing my best at the moment as an active snailmailer. I don't mind so much the different issues as such but it is the values for the stamps - no single stamp to add on to accompany a first class stamp on airmail, etc. Plus a few issues in a row without a stamp for international rates. I have three letters I need to decide on postage for and post today!
I am a Penpaller and Stamp User. I send therefore I receive. I blog here. I also have a snailmail forum.

I wrote these according to what I have remembered.

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting? I am not a stamp collector, when I have discovered a bunch of newspaper envelopes full of old stamps in the storage table in the store of our neighbor. I just brought 5 envelopes home and share some to my younger brother and sister, then the other envelopes were given to my older brother for safe keeping. I took more envelopes the next day, and still give it to my older brother. The next week, I have discovered that my father has some envelopes full of stamps, and have found out that my siblings does not have interest in stamp collecting, that is the time I decided to become a stamp collector. I
like to buy stamps but do not know where. That is the time I decided to have an exchange with my neighbor, to whom I have found some stamps, yet I exchanged the stamps from my father's collection in a 2:1 ratio for 1 foreign stamp I got. I have limited funds, that is why my collection is so few in these years I was still in Grade V, this was in 1970.

2. What countries or topics do you primarily collect? I am a collector of older stamps from the old British Colonies, German Colonies, Portuguese Colonies, Belgian Colonies, Danish Colonies, Dutch Colonies, Spanish Colonies, French Colonies, Italian Colonies
Austria-Hungary Empire, Ottoman Empire, Indian Princely States, Possessions, Occupations, Dead Countries, New Countries, WWI, WWII, and all other oldies. I am a neophyte to Cinderella stamps. I specialized in my Philippine stamps since Spanish Colony to Republic Issues.

4. How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby? I really spend several hours, since morning till lunch time, then do some stretching to regain composure and continue till 3 in the afternoon.

5. What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes? I am also hooked to coins and banknote collections, yet I am not very serious about this hobby, as it takes too much love and care more than the care I gave to my stamps. I also like swimming, jogging and walking to become energized and fit.

6. What is your favorite movie? I like movies that are adventurous
science fictions, about karate and martial arts, full of actions and thrilling. I like all the Jackie Chan movies, Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Indiana Jones, James Bond 007 movies, Pirates Of the Caribbean.

7. What is your favorite stamp? My favorite stamp was the Penny Black that I still wish to have.

8. What is your favorite food? I am vegetarian and I like also fish preparations and lots of fruits.

9. Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it? I have a pet fish. His name is Johnny. He is a pink shark, and would love to be scrubbed,
when I change the water in his aquarium. I also have a pet dog, a Chihuahua stock. He is very cute and knows when I am home, that he waits me in the front door, the wiggling tail of happiness.

10. What is your professional background? I have been a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Commerce, Major in Marketing. I also took a government sponsored vocational course of Massage Therapy.

11. What is your favorite TV show? I like our local TV show known as, "Its Showtime", then I also like seeing Formula 1 car racing show, then I like viewing HBO cable movies from Universal Studios.

12. What one person, dead or alive, would you like to meet?
I wish that person would be God, so that I can pay my tribute of thanking Him to all my graces especially my being alive everyday.

13. What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards? I was brought to Stampboards when I surf the net and find some interesting facts about stamp collecting, then I discovered this wonderful site was so resourceful, that is why I register myself as a member. I still have to read more interesting topics in our website. I am refreshed and become more knowledgeable than I think before, that is why I am so thankful to be a member here.

14. What is one thing you always have in your refrigerator?
I always have some fresh meat, fresh milk, mineral water, fishes, vegetables and fruits.

15. Who is your favorite musician? Aside from our local artist, I like Michael Jackson, Bee Gees, Frank Senatra, The Carpenters, Abba, Andy Williams and many many more.

16. If you won the lottery, what stamps would you buy? Although,
I am not fun of buying lotteries, I think I would buy the rare stamps and some funds for my safe keeping and future business deals.

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting?
My grandfather was a keen bird stamp collector, and he encouraged me into the hobby. My father collected stamps as a child and still has his mass of old albums. As a child they were incredibly inspiring, but then I stopped. I've tried to analyse why, and think this is the reason... I had no aim or purpose in my collecting. I was collecting the world, and collecting for the sake of collecting. I got bored. I tried to restart a few times, but lapsed every time. Same problem!

Then, several years ago I inherited my grandfathers collection, and decided to give it one more go. That was when I chanced upon Stampboards, and articles by Rod Perry and Maurice Miskhe, and from there I suddenly found direction and purpose in areas of philately that genuinely excited me - postal history (rates and usage) and social philately.

2. What Countries or topics do you primarily collect?
I largely stick to Australia, or to covers that have some link to Australia. However, in social philately, I will also look internationally if there is a good story behind the cover that will engage my interest enough to follow through with the research required.

3. What is your favorite country or topic to collect?
Australia and social philately.

4. How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby?
Too many.

5. What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes?
I'm passionate about food, wine and craft beer. I also do a lot of research into my family tree and documenting that. I have traced my direct paternal line back to 1100 and am now following all the maternal lines.

6. What is your favorite movie?
Chariots of Fire

7. What is your favorite stamp?
I'm partial to several, but have no favourite.

8. What is your favorite food?
Japanese, Thai and Indian cuisines are all up there. But nothing beats fresh bread, extra virgin olive oil, a selection of cheeses, and olives, washed down with a glass of steely Riesling or a very cold pint of IPA.

9. Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it?
Poor customer service, which is why I love Japan so much. Customer service is an art form here.

10. What is your professional background?
Engineer turned programmer, mathematician, physicist, educator, administrator.

11. What one person, dead or alive, would you like to meet?
ONE? Here's ten: Andrew Jackson, Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Paul Keating, Samuel Pepys, Ernest Hemingway, Carl Sagan, Sei Shonagon. Only one of these people is still alive!

12. What is your favorite TV show?
Grand Designs

13. What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards?
Probably Google

14. What is one thing you always have in your refrigerator?
ONE THING? Sorry, here's another list: Wine, beer, olives, feta, charcuterie, and a variety of chilli sauces.

15. Who is your favorite musician?
For the last two years, the only CDs in my stacker have been those by the Japanese groups Perfume and 水曜日のカンパネラ (Suiyoubi no Campanella). I have a ticket to see Perfume in concert next month.

16. If you won the lottery, what stamps would you buy?
Anything I wanted - isn't that the beauty of it?

8. What is your favorite food? pavlova

9. Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it? the disgusting use of the written language these days, im far from perfect but all these people that rite lke dis should all be rounded up and sent back to school.

Here’s mine:

1) When and how did you start stamp collecting?

I started collecting in 1974 at the age of nine when I received a letter from my grandmother with the US stamp The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Scott #1548, see my avatar) on it. The stamp intrigued me and I began collecting other stamps as well. My collecting tapered off when I went away to college. About 10 years ago, I began again for a year or two but then stopped. Last year, due to some health issues, I decided to retire early and pulled out my collection to help pass the time.

2) What Countries or topics do you primarily collect?

I started out collecting the world and still do to some extent. I will buy any stamp from any country if it piques my interest. Also, I would like to collect representative examples from all past and present stamp issuing entities.

My primary interests, though, are in the following areas (in no particular order):
1) US until 1995 including Hawaii and Canal Zone
2) French Polynesia until 2000
3) Canada and provinces until 2000
4) Australia and states until 2000
5) German Third Reich, inflation issues, and colonies
6) Rhodesia from BSAP until 1980
7) South Africa and predecessor states until 2000
8) South West Africa/Namibia until 2000
9) Portuguese African colonies
10) Scandinavian countries (particularly Iceland) until 2000
11) British Virgin Islands until present
12) Papua New Guinea until 2000

I realize that this is quite a list, but I don’t expect to complete any of them and I am not interested in differences in plate varieties, watermarks, etc. If I have one example of each face different stamp, I am satisfied. By the way, topically, I collect stamps depicting Captain Cook, coral reefs, and the military.

3) What is your favorite country or topic to collect?

My favorite country is the US but I’ve been spending a lot of time and money on French Polynesia lately.

4) How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby?

Quite a few

5) What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes?

I enjoy spending time with my wife, Phyllis, and my Miniature Pinscher, Rhubarb. I also enjoy watching Major League Baseball on TV, genealogy, hiking, camping, fishing, scuba diving, and reading/collecting history books. Unfortunately, due to my health, I can’t participate in several of them as much as I would like to.

6) What is your favorite movie?

Kelly’s Heroes and Where Eagles Dare with Clint Eastwood, Sense and Sensibility, and anything with Cary Grant.

7) What is your favorite stamp?

The US $1.00 cattle in storm of the 1898 Trans-Mississippi set (Scott #292) and the US 80 cent Diamond Head Hawaii airmail stamp of 1952 (Scott #C46).

8) What is your favorite food?

BACON!!!

9) Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it?

Political correctness taken to extremes

10) What is your professional background?

I am the former owner (now retired) of a construction company and a real estate development/management firm.

11) What one person, dead or alive, would you like to meet?

Adolph Hitler...to ask him what the &$#[at] he was thinking.

12) What is your favorite TV show?

The original Magnum P.I. with Tom Selleck, Midsomer Murders, and The Big Bang Theory

13) What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards?

A Google search for stamp forums

14) What is one thing you always have in your refrigerator?

Diet Orange Crush soda

15) Who is your favorite musician?

Elvis

16) If you won the lottery, what stamps would you buy?

The Scott #C3a Inverted Jenny

This sounds like a good idea to me.

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting?

I wanted to collect stamps as a kid, but dad thought I was far too young. It was not until I started secondary school in 1978 that dad let me have his stamp collection. It was mostly common stuff from the 50's and 60's including CTO material. The one stamp that caught my eye was a penny red imperf with a Maltese cross postmark. After all these years this is the only stamp I have left from dads collection and it still forms the core of my collection. No matter how many times I have put a collection together the penny red still is my starting place to rebuild from.

2. What Countries or topics do you primarily collect?

I like a lot of early stamps but cannot afford to collect everything. Over the years my collecting tastes have narrowed quite a lot. I still have odds and ends but usually pre 1970 commonwealth odds.

3. What is your favorite country or topic to collect?

That is easy I collect Great Britain. Line engraved stamps. My collection is like a hoover for the things and I tend to gravitate towards Penny reds. Just cannot get enough of the stamp in all its various forms. For the last few years I have been putting together a collection of C10 (die II, alphabet III, Wmk large crown, rose red on white paper)plates. Easier said the done, but I love a challenge.

4. How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby?

Not enough. I might get half hour after work during the week days and a couple of hours during the weekend. Just had a whole weeks holiday, but did not get much done at all due to family and other commitments.

5. What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes?

Family history which has been placed on hold. lack of time and Paperwork takes over the place.
Photography, which I do not get much time for.
Baccy tin artist, specialising in making prison art tins.

6. What is your favorite movie?

I tend to get one for a while then go off of the movie very quickly due to the constant replaying on TV. Once you have watched a movie once or twice you don't really need to see it again as it's often still fresh in the memory for quite a while after.

7. What is your favorite stamp?

Great Britain Penny Reds. The more the merrier.

8. What is your favorite food?

Curry.

9. Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it?

Perfectly centred stamps. OK they have a place but it's just not natural for an early stamp to be 100% centred. Besides if my stamps were dead centre I would not probably see any of the important marginal flaws and varieties. I willingly pay more for an off centred stamp showing a great variety then a dead centred on showing only a small part of it.

10. What is your professional background?

Slave to a factory. The jobs ok but the money is poor, and my boss thinks we are paid well.

11. What one person, dead or alive, would you like to meet?

Connected with stamp collecting,I doubt the people I would mention would mean much too most here except for like minded collectors. Two people who I wonder most about was Wiggin and Tonna. Their contribution to the plating of the penny red stars was phenomenal. Could of learned so much from them. Kenneth Statham I would also add to that list.

In my own family it would be my Great grandfather who I was named after. He died a month or two before I was born. Apparently he was quite a gentle man and very warm and friendly.

12. What is your favorite TV show?

Mostly I watch documentaries but even these I have nearly given up on. Repeated too many times.

13. What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards?

Just found it when searching for certain answers to a few questions I had at the time. Decided to hang around. Might learn something.

14. What is one thing you always have in your refrigerator?

Basic stuff. Milk, Eggs, Butter.

15. Who is your favorite musician?

Far too many. Musical tastes from Jazz and Swing to Progressive Rock. Classical to heavy metal. Depends the mood I am in.

16. If you won the lottery, what stamps would you buy?

Penny reds, by the bucket full,
Loves to collect Lundy Island and 12 miles as straight as the Puffin flies South East another little island called England.

Spectacular to see this thread reactivated several times in my long absence!

I am tempted to do some statistical analysis on the response but interpretation would be skewed by my own biases because of the wide variety of ways people have interpreted the questions.

I would comment that the vast majority started very young and picked it up again much later in life. Not a surprise as I have heard it again and again over the past 54 years in the hobby.

The fact that so many are engineers or involved in IT isn’t surprising to me either. I imagine being active on an online forum self selects such backgrounds. When at the LSC or in the stamp press I hear laments about how the hobby is dieing, I tend to think these are people unable to deal with change.

Stamp Collecting has just moved online! It seems alive and well to me.

ReinaStamps - It is great to see this thread getting brought back to life!

You might like to investigate the Mexico-Elmhurst Philatelic Society, International, (MEPSI).

Or course you collect enough of the world to look into the ISWSC as well, but I would encourage you to find a local stamp club.

Local shows, of which there are several in the Houston area, might also interest you.... the largest is in late September or early October as I recall.

Hi RobRoy Yes, I am a member of MEPSI. :)

In terms of a local club - that one is tough for me. The closest is a little far and with 2 young boys and a very demanding career, I have not figured it out. But I have not given up joining a club!

Yes - I would love to attend a show - I think in addition to the Big show in the Fall there is one coming in March in Katy, TX which is only about 45 mins away. Hoping to check that out.

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting?

As kids, my sister and I got introduced to philately by our parents back in Finland. Being a bilingual and binational family (Swedish & Finnish), we had quite some Nordic stamps in the house. Unfortunately, my stamps hobby was a brief affair at the time.

I started seriously collecting stamps some five months ago. Been penpalling most of my life though, so I have been saving some nice envelopes throughout the years.

2. What Countries or topics do you primarily collect?

Finland, Japan, mythologies, medieval themes, Vikings, folklore, mythical creatures. I have been thinking about starting an astronomy collection as well. Maybe even Austrian and Yugoslavian stamps…

3. What is your favorite country or topic to collect?

Finland under Russian rule, especially the 1891 stamps with small circles in the corners.
Early Japan (except pre-1900, as it seems so hard to tell forgeries from genuine stamps)
Japanese "Hero and Heroine" series.
Hungarian Saints and Blesseds minisheets.

4. How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby?
Waaay too many.

5. What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes?
Writing content for a few websites, martial arts, yoga, gym, cooking, reading, astronomy, making jewellery.

6. What is your favorite movie?
Apocalypse Now. Spirited Away. Grandmaster. And many, many more.

7. What is your favorite stamp?

As kids, my sister and I got introduced to philately by our parents back in Finland. Being a bilingual and binational family (Swedish & Finnish), we had quite some Nordic stamps in the house. Unfortunately, my stamps hobby was a brief affair at the time.

I started seriously collecting stamps some five months ago. Been penpalling most of my life though, so I have been saving some nice envelopes throughout the years.
Woo hoo, another letter writer!
I am a Penpaller and Stamp User. I send therefore I receive. I blog here. I also have a snailmail forum.

This looks like fun, and I missed it when I first signed up so here goes!

1. When and how did you start stamp collecting?

I had a collection of US stamps as a young kid, mostly topicals, but never really got bitten by the bug. Fast forward to high school and my grandmother gifted me my grandfather's collection as a thank-you for spending a few weeks with her during the summer and helping her arrange an estate sale (sounds grander than it was, but it was bigger than a yard/garage sale!). I totally got bit by the George V Silver Jubilee issues that my grandfather had collected in mint, as well as some of his business correspondence that grandma had saved the envelopes from (they had owned a textile factory and had clients across the world who corresponded frequently). From there, it was a matter of just running with my interests!

2. What Countries or topics do you primarily collect?

It shifts depending on my mood, but my major interests are listed in my current (September 2021) signature on here: Benelux (mint, #1 to present as I can afford them), Germany (Weimar to 1990), Sarawak (Brooke era), the KGV Silver Jubilees, and I have recently started on Australia and the pre-Commonwealth issues of the six states. In previous years, I've collected Spain (Civil War era Spain was the reason I first signed up to Stampboards, in search of literature and identification help!) and Denmark (the Christian X era).

3. What is your favorite country or topic to collect?

Hard to really answer this one, but I've really fallen in love with the Chalon Head designs in use in the British Empire during the late 19th century. One of the things that really draws me to a stamp, especially from the Victorian through Georgian eras, is depth of color, and these designs tend to offer that in spades! But in addition to those, I really like collecting definitives from various monarchies, because I find it interesting how the portrayal of the head of state can vary from place to place or era to era. In a similar vein, I started collecting Germany because of my work as a political scientist who has one area of focus in propaganda and public art; seeing how the design of Germany's stamps changed from the Weimar into the Nazi era has been a fascinating avenue of exploration.

4. How many hours a week do you spend on this hobby?

A few, but nowhere near as much as I would like. I was able to focus a lot more on my collecting over the past two years because of COVID meaning that I could work and teach remotely. Now that I am back in the classroom (yay!), it's become much more of a nights-and-weekends "when I get a moment" affair!

5. What are some of your other hobbies or pastimes?

I'm a voracious reader, especially nonfiction (history mostly) and those cheap but fun airplane thrillers that seem omnipresent in most bookstores. I also collect modern bullion coins (silver only) though not to the extent I used to when I was a bit younger. I'm also an avid theatre fan and try to get to a Broadway show at least a few times a year (the benefits of being ~3 hours from New York City!).

6. What is your favorite movie?

Bit of a tough question, but I always find myself coming back to old movie musicals when I'm not sure what to watch.

7. What is your favorite stamp?

Historically, the common design for the Silver Jubilee issues (as seen in my avatar on the boards). But of late, I've found myself very much drawn to Queensland SG 156/161/165. In my opinion, photographs and scans can never do the richness of the green true justice; it seems to almost have a glow to it every time I open my album. (Stock image as I'm not near my scanner right now.)

8. What is your favorite food?

If we're talking style of cuisine, then it's probably Japanese or Korean. But for a specific dish, it's my family recipe for minestrone soup. Absolutely nothing like a bowl after a long day during a New England winter!

9. Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it?

People misusing language/terminology that has specific definitions. It just bothers me for reasons I cannot begin to explain. I've always been like that too, as has my father.

10. What is your professional background?

Once upon a time, I worked in professional politics here in Rhode Island (staffer, never wanted to run myself!), but for the past several years I've been a graduate student and now a college professor in political science.

11. What one person, dead or alive, would you like to meet?

The Queen. Been a dream of mine since I was a little kid.

12. What is your favorite TV show?

Hard to pick just one! But for drama, I'm a devotee of the entire Law & Order franchise, and for comedy, the Norman Lear catalog.

13. What brought you to Stampboards or how did you find out about Stampboards?

Originally, I was looking for advice on catalogues for and identification of stamps for the Spanish Civil War, and found a link here from a google search; folks were very helpful answering my questions, but then I put away my collecting for a bit. Found the site again earlier this year and got a bit more involved, and hope to continue that in the future.

14. What is one thing you always have in your refrigerator?

Diet ginger ale. I practically live off of it, especially when I'm writing a paper or the next article I need to submit for academic publication.

15. Who is your favorite musician?

Tough call again, but I'm really into AJR right now. In terms of more classical artists, I'm a longtime fan of the opera singers Dame Kiri Te Kanawa (now retired, iirc) and Renée Fleming. In terms of composers, I have always been a Haydn fan, as well as Telemann (one of the few composers to write extensively for the viola, which I played for many years through the end of high school).

16. If you won the lottery, what stamps would you buy?

Probably back to my first love: the Silver Jubilees of George V. I'd love to own a Prussian Blue from the British set, and if I had the resources of a lottery win, I'd definitely want to work on assembling a medal-worthy exhibit of the original proofs and designs (those that aren't in museums or the Royal Collection, of course).

Collecting Interests: Benelux, Germany, Sarawak, KGV Silver Jubilee, Australia, Newfoundland
