The "I'll be away from the boards for a while" thread

Post by MargoZ »

Stampboards is a real community. Sometimes regular members 'disappear' for a while and I know the Moderators and other members are be concerned if they are OK, and sometimes even drop a line to them.

I thought this thread might be useful as a bit of a Community noticeboard, so if members are going off to trek the Andes, have a gall bladder replaced, become acting Managing Director ... or have a new addition to the family etc, they can give a heads up that they'll be missing in action for a while.

So here it is ......The "I'll be away from the boards for a while" thread 8)

One suggestion though....remember: we are a public board so don't post any information which could put your home and possessions at risk.

Good idea for a thread Margo. I know that GJ50 (Gary Brown) has been wandering around overseas for some weeks, and has only intermitent internet access, so I would hope and expect our regular on-line friends and colleagues will add to this thread ifr they are going to be out of internet access for a time.

It makes us all "a little bit less jumpy" (movie quote)

A wonderful idea Margo! Saves us a lot of worry unless they are unexpectedly internet deprived like TonyMacg was a few weeks ago! That got quite a few people worried.

So, I'll start it off by saying I'll be in Melbourne next week from Tuesday (15th May) until next Friday (18th May)!

Hopefully, I'll be able to snaffle the son-in-laws computer somewhere along the line to catch up...but he's a bit funny about other people using his computer!!!

Haven't got a problem with that except I have got some things on e-bay!

Ah, blast it! He's either going to have to watch over my shoulder or just let me go!!! After all, I "am" the MIL, (mother-in law) and I do have a certain amount of swish here!!! (I do have another son-in-law who calls me Mil...has done for years...I actually like it! but I supose it's a 'between him and me sort of thing!'

Anyway, I do hope everyone uses this as a call in....if they are going away on holidays...someone is sick... etc...and can't get back regularly!

Great Idea! I've often wanted to say that I was AFK (Away from Keyboard) for a few days without wishing to sound self-important (as if anybody would know I was missing, apart from the silence!)

Hi Norm...aka...the Starman!!! Love that movie!!! Send me your address as well, and I'll send you a postcard!! Might not be from Melbourne! but it will happen! Yellow means "go very fast" so it will definitely have to be something yellow

Boy, these postcards are going to cost a fortune!!! And who cares!!! It's all fun!

Would you like one too Norvic? Send me your address! Anything specific? Name your poison!!! As they say!!

I have a list (growing!) of about 25 people who I send postcards to when ever we go away!

I must admit that it's good fun sending these postcards everywhere! There's a sense of satisfaction sending someone some mail and making their day! So much better than an email or a facebook reply! (and as a stamp collector they not only get a nice post card but a current stamp as well!)

I love doing it! I think it's my "thing"!

Margo and GA , postcards will be sent!

I will be heading to Shanghai then on to Xinjiang province in China to stay with the inlaws, and complete the second part of the wedding, paperwork already done, now for the traditional way with tea and possible alchololic beverages that I never heard of before 8)

Leaving around 15 June, returning to Australia with my Wife who recieved an Australian Visa last week. Hope HR gives me the holidays or I am divorced before I get married

Should be able to get online all depends on what sites are blocked in this far away province.

Any requests? Sorry I don't buy rare Monkey Stamps although my now Aunty has one

China is a very fickle place when it comes to the internet. North Korea took the simple route -- they simply banned it outright. A couple years ago China launched a huge firewall project that would regulate all internet traffic in the country; they named it...Great Wall.

As Tassie says, FB is blocked, but people get around that easily with a proxy. Websites that advocate politics that don't agree with the Party's taste are blocked. The firewall is constantly tweaked. Last week it was reported that a photo shoot was done in a provincial city, where a Ferrari was placed on the historic 600-year-old city walls. There was an outcry; in response, the word 'Ferrari' was blocked on micro-blog websites.

Enjoy the trip, careful what you drink there, don't let your guard down thinking "its alcohol, ipso facto any germs will be neutralized."

aethelwulf thanks for the warning, well I believe the city we are passing through is where all that trouble started with the riots about 3 years ago in Urumqi the capital of Xinjiang and then the Internet was banned in most places even my wife in Shanghai could not talk to her parents in Yili online.

Yes I will take good care and eat lots, drinking will be limited and I won't be feeling homesick at all :D . I love the feed of Duck head, horse, goat and tofu all wonderful stuff, please forgive me all horse admirers out there.

Will visit HK one day, I liked it there although it was just a overnight stay in Soy Street.

Oh and I will try to get a photo or two of the 1980 Chinese year book, it has the Monkey stamp in it, my New Aunty is lucky she runs the very small post office in a village.

Cheers

Internet in China also depends on WHERE you are I think.

We stayed a few months back at the Hilton in Shanghai and nothing was blocked as far as I know.

We had Facebook open with no issues and could post from it.

Hi everyone, well, I'm back! Had an AWESOME day with TonyMcG discussing Indian State stamps. Two wonderful days with our youngest grand daughter (18 mths old today!) and another day with my 'little' brother who's 6'5"....yeah! real little! Time went very quickly...so did the wine!!!

Postcards were entrusted to daughter number 4 to post as I ended up with no time to post them! hope she remembers them!

Shopping Margo??? When you come from a country town, pop. 400, ANYWHERE has more shopping than here! I had my first ever trip to IKEA...what an eye opener...I wanted one of everything! It's sooo huge!!!

Went to a nice little coin shop...somewhere :?: ..for an hour or so and bought some random coins and a Roman coin and then spent a delightful couple of hours at Michael Eastick's stamp shop in Forest Hill! Some nice 'stuff' but not as well priced as your bargains Glen!! When you live over 100 klm from the nearest stamp shop....this was seventh heaven! Thanks go to Shannon for finding these places before I came down and then driving me everywhere so I could have some 'fun'. Buying on-line is one thing, no matter what the venue. But actually handling and looking at the stamps....

All in all, a delightful little break! Glad to be back to my computer though! Had no access to the internet down there! Son-in-law Matt just got the newest version of Diablo 3...any gamers will know what I'm talking about!...so there was never a question about having internet time!!! :(

I have been member here for Past 1 yr and never had been too much away so as to loose contact with stampboards.

But here we have this thread opened a few days back and immediately I find myself in this position...

I have just now got my admission for my Post Graduation in Surgery. So the next few weeks will be busy and till I get accustomed to my new hectic lifestyle I may be a bit away from my hobby related activities.

Logging in and checking posts still possible through mobile but that walk to post office may get delayed and so posting of stamps or covers may get delayed.

Micky here in Yili, China. Went though a small tremor 6.6  around 6am Australian time now that was freaky, lucky we are only 2 levels up from the ground.

Found no KGV stamp hoards yet, actually I have found no stamps at all :( .

Enjoying the food, the 30 degree heat and the interesting ways of life here in Yili, I think everyone has a cold or something their is a lot of spitting going on  . The sun comes up around 5am and gone by 11pm.

Ciao for now

Just letting everyone know that I will be unavilable from tomorrow (Thursday, July 5th), to Monday July 9th. Daughter #3 is having her 35th Birthday in Sydney! It's going to be a loosely themed 80's style PJ party.

I don't recall ever owning a pair of PJ's in my life....but the girls have decided that will change! It has me a tad worried!! :? They have promised :?: they won't be hot pink with tiger prints!? I don't think I can trust them that far!!

If it's not toooo embarassing, I will put some pics up when it's all over....maybe!

Have fun Anne!

We just sent all of our kids off to sleepaway camp for 6 weeks - so I should have lots of time to spend with stamps over the summer! Naomi found some time after school ended to sort through her stamps - her stockbook is filling up quite nicely. She carefully puts them into sets and orders them by denomination. I'll post some pictures when I have a chance on my Trading Post.

Home after the most awesome, funny weekend I think I have ever spent in my life! My side still aches from all the laughing! This is a close up of the PJ's the kid's bought me! Too embarrassing to show the whole pic! The girls did an awesome job finding and dressing up in 80's gear!

Image

Had a whole series of challenges to complete! Kerryn got lumbered with ordering pizzas talking like a pirate...hilarious! Shannon had to do a somersault that ended up looking like a ...to quote the girls...sausage roll! I had to do a worm...and believe me, I'm not good at that!

We had to touch random strangers, shadow dance someone in the street, wear a rugby sticker on our forehead, ask someone what the time was in Darwin so we could make a phone call, moonwalking, try to convince anyone that aliens really exist ...and believe me, after Robyn went around accosting people about aliens, I reckon at least half those people went home...just wondering!

Shannon had to make 3 farm yard animal sounds...you should have seen her running down the platform at City Central doing a chook!!! OMG!!!

There was heaps more but all in all, the best and funniest weekend ever!

I think Robyn had the bestest 34th birthday any one could have. Memories to last a life time!

Hi all, Micky here still in China. Funny story to share, with the help of my Wife I was telling my Wife family what a great place Australia is and they all looked happy indeed, well not long after that a tv show came on called ”Australia Dangerous Animals" and that night on one of the 60+ channels the movie that got me answering a lot of questions  ,the Dingo took my baby, now that's bad timing  . Anyway all is well here.

Cheers
Micky

Thank you Hutch and Mickey for the update on your adventures.
Tourism Australia must really hate it when those sort of docos are broadcast overseas!

Hi all,

Just to say I've been away from the boards for a while, but I'm back, fit and firing :D

Cheers,

Cheers Hutch & Brummie - Oh I wish I had been on some beach

I've not been sick but I have had the devil's own time regarding some musical acquaintances - has fairly done my head in over the last couple of months.

Now, who's got New South Wales stamps to ask about ?? :D

You may be sorry you asked that bathurst stamper!! I don't live ALL that far from you and would just LOVE someone have a look and tell me what junk I have :(

What kind of music are you involved with? I have a son-in-law who plays for a band that does pub rounds in Sydney (I think he sounds great but they will never make their fortune!) and I also have a nephew who has just been picked to do an American tour with Vanishing Point. Don't ask me about any of that as I don't know but apparently they are receiving rave reviews. All I do know is that James is incredibly quick on the ...what is it they call it on a guitar?

It's not the type of music I generally listen to but I do like listening to him. He has awesome talent!

Glad to know you weren't sick bathurststamper.

Keep well

Hi all, I will be returning to Australia Monday 13th August. Can't wait to open all the mail I have, including a lot of Qld, NSW and KGV lots and a interesting Papua cancel that needs to be checked over carefully, I am sure the Lakatois collectors are eager to know more on the cancel. Oh and some wedding photo too might be a good idea, better not forget them :P

China is great, and I have a wonderful new family I have now and this will be a yearly event for me and my new wife. If you can get to see Shanghai once in your life then do it.

6 China trips and many more to come, seen Great wall, Beijing, Shanghai, Xian & warriors, Hangzhou, Urumqi and new home of Yili.
Michael
